‘The Writers Retreat’ was designed as a functional workspace that draws from the mythology and fantasy of the site, whilst allowing the client to peacefully work in a stimulating environment. The saw-tooth roof maximises southern daylighting with large skylights, whilst being a defining feature of the building which draws from the productivity associated with factories. Situated in the forest of Westgate Garden Canterbury, the use of vernacular form and materiality ensures an intimate relationship to the city whilst being ingrained in the surrounding nature with reflective ash timber cladding.

When designing the Whitstable sea wall gallery I was conscious of the limited and awkward space of the site. But through simplifying the plan into two large exhibition spaces across two floors separated by a central circulation core, I’ve created an adaptable gallery that benefits from stable daylighting and views across the sea.

Rather than departing from the vernacular form and materiality I positioned the building as a monolithic structure that reflects the surrounding buildings and aims to enhance the presence of a coastal façade.

I felt it was imperative to make a clear connection between the methods of ther-apy and the lush nature of the site. This is embodied by the interior sensory garden, viewable from both floors, with large skylights and windows creating a subtle transition from the exterior. This is also reinforced by the use of vernacular materials and the subterranean levels of the ground floor providing good thermal mass to the accommodation.

To ensure a range of therapy methods are provided there are a mixture of group and private facilities. To provide a peaceful seclusion from the busy Faversham streets, the development has been located on the upper peaks of the park within the heart of the forest.

Adapt and ExtendCanterbury | Templeman Library Extension

The Templeman library of the University of Kent had perhaps lost its identity as the centre of education and development, I was tasked with creating an extension to the building which re-established it as a core hub of the campus.

The design predominantly takes the form of a tower – climbing seven floors the extension can be viewed from across the campus and acts as a beacon, guiding students to the facilities. The large glass windows frame vast views into Canterbury and beyond.

To maintain and improve the established quiet and social study zones, as you ascend each level there are more private study environments creating acoustically isolated zones separating from the mass of the lower levels. By subtly changing the materiality of the structure from brick to steel and glass the growth of the building with time is also represented.

To rejuvenate the St. Radigunds car park in Canterbury, working with my peers, we master-planned a new housing and education development. I then went on to develop the horticulture education building within our master-plan with modular design driving my ideas.

The development is formed of altered shipping containers, themselves master-planned into classrooms, a hall and other student and staff facilities. They are interconnected through decking and internal gardens – whilst vines would grow over the modules fully engaging the students with the horticulture of the site. They maintain a monolithic presence, as if they had always been there and this is reinforced with the covered oxidised façades.

UrbanRochester | Kent School of Art and MusicMy final degree project explored the theme of urban infill, working in a challenging historic context. It required me to experiment and speculate with re-use, proximities, and public and private spaces.

Ultimately I designed a postgraduate college for the University of Kent’s School of Music and Fine Arts. The brief required studio and music practice spaces, some communal rooms, and small scale residential accommodation.

The site is the large open space between the cathedral in Rochester and the Norman castle nearby.

In the past, this area included a college green and a street of houses, but by the end of the 1960s the buildings had been swept away leaving only the small archway to the green on the high street at the northern end.

Page 34: Orhan Unlu | Part 1 Architectural Design Portfolio | 2011 - 2014

The site is accessed by a café arcade creating a new public façade whilst being a means of transition from the commercial high street to the creative campus. It also provides direct access to the concert hall and art gallery spaces.

The music practice room tower is a reflection of the existing castle wall turret opposite, and acts as a broadcasting beacon that greets the incoming public.

The tower is divided acoustically with the ground floor being completely isolated for new students to practice and reflect efficiently whilst the top floor; with older experienced students, broadcasts in all directions.

Curriculum Vitae

Personal Statement

Through achieving my degree I have developed a professional understanding of design, exploring and refining my methodology to enhance the personal attributes of each scheme; from initial concept to final presentation. I am focused and inquisitive, and enjoy exploring each brief with local interactions and technical research to create meaningful and interesting outcomes. My main strengths include a logically analytical approach to design, the ability to develop conceptual ideas into uniquely intelligent solutions, and an active absorption of new mediums and processes allowing me to develop new skills quickly. I enjoy working with both physical and digital mediums, creatively expressing ideas in the most appropriately informative manner.

I am motivated and reliable, working well within a team and as an individual. I am determined to make a meaningful contribution through my work and maintain a passion for architectural design.
