Brief Note on Central Integrated Pest Management Centre (CIPMCs)
Integrated Pest Management: The Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an ecological approach which
aims at keeping pest below economic thresholds level by employing all available alternate pest control
methods and techniques such as cultural, mechanical and biological control with greater emphasis on use
of bio-pesticides and pesticides of plant-origin like Neem formulation. The use of chemical pesticides is
advised as a last resort when pest crosses economic thresholds level.
Government of India, Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers welfare has launched a
scheme “Strengthening and Modernization of Pest Management Approach in India” adopting Integrated
Pest Management (IPM) as main plant protection strategy. Under the ambit of IPM programme, the Govt.
of India has established 35 Central IPM Centers in 29 States and one UT. These Central IPM Centers are
working with the objectives to:
Minimize the crop losses caused by pests and diseases.
Encourage farmers to use various ecologically sustainable pest management approaches rather than
relying only on chemical pesticides.
Promote use of bio-pesticides & bio-control agents in plant pest management.
Conserve the diverse Agro- ecosystem for build-up of various natural enemies for plant pests.
Create awareness amongst farmers on
(i) Safe and judicious use of chemical pesticides,
(ii) To follow the label claims and instructions on dose and use as approved by CIB&RC.
Carryout survey and surveillance for pest and diseases with main emphasis to forewarn the farmers
on the potential epidemics of plant pests.
Popularizing IPM in farming community by imparting training to Agriculture / Horticulture
Extension Functionaries and Farmers at Grass Root Level by organizing Farmers Field Schools / 2
days / Five days HRD programmes and Season Long Training Programmes of 30 days. In these
programmes, they are being trained on latest IPM technology and to adopt organic farming and bio-
fertilizers as well.
Central IPM Centres conduct rapid roving survey on weekly interval basis especially in pests/
diseases prone areas so as to advise state on any likely increase of pest’s build-up.
The major contribution of IPM scheme is that the quantity of chemical pesticide use has been
drastically reduced. During the year 1991-92, total quantity of chemical pesticide consumption in the
country was about 75033 MT (Tech. grade) and the quantity used during 2016-17 is about 54121 MT (Tech.
Grade). The IPM Scheme was introduced during 1991-92, since then, 17945 nos. of Farmers Field Schools
(FFSs) were conducted wherein 538590 farmers have been trained. An area of 283.68 lakh ha. has been
covered under pest surveillance and 55778.45 million bio-control agents have been released on the field
crops. 2632 officers from State Agriculture Department were trained as Master Trainer in 73 Season Long
Training Programmes. Since 2005-06, 1167 trainings of 2days and 139 Nos. of 5- days HRD programmes
were conducted through which 52240 farmers and AEOs/Pesticides Dealers/ NGOs/ Progressive Farmers
were trained. IPM package of practices in 87 major crops have been developed and available on the Dte.’s
website www.dppqs.gov.in.
