Organization: Sr.D.M.E. (C&W) (Vivek Mohan) DME (C&W)/DHN (R.K.Mandal) CDO/DHN (Mohan Ram) ADME/DHN (Mahavir Singh) ADME/BRKA (A.P.Singh) ADME/BRWD (Nitin Kumar) DME/CPU (M.Siddiqui) Foreword: Dhanbad, also known as the ‘Coal Capital of India’ division is a premier coal loading division. It is also a leading revenue earning division of Indian Railways. Most of the coal which is loaded in the division, is supplied to the Power Houses in Northern/Eastern India as well as different Thermal Stations within the division. Apart from the coal loading and freight activities, the division also has a total of 19 trains (Express:11, Passenger:8) are primarily maintained in the four different coaching depots of the division. Thus the Carriage & Wagon department of this division plays a pivotal role in maintenance and operation of trains across the entire length and breadth of the division. It is headed by Sr.DME (C&W), who is assisted by two Sr.Scale Officer & four Assistant grade officers. Freight Activities: There are 15 C&W freight depots/points in the division, the major freight depots being located at Patherdih, Patratu, Barwadih & Obradam where infrastructure like pathways, illumination, welding, material handling facilities and air compressor machines have been provided. ROH of BOBRN wagons, DV overhauling and wheel turning facility is available at Barwadih. Apart from the above, sick line repair facilities are also available at Patherdih, Patratu, Barwadih & Obra depots. A total of 42 Barwadih based BOBRN CC Rakes (named as Super Turbo) are running in between Barwadih-Ray/Khilari-Dedri/Unchahar/Ropar/Rihand on 7500 Kms or 30 days basis and 13 mixed BOBR/BOBRN CC rakes are running between Patherdih/Kathrashgarh-Mejia circuits on 20/30 days validity. In addition to this, 04 BOBRN CC rakes are also maintained at OBRA on 6000 Kms or 30 days validity basis. These rakes are running in the close circuit of Chopan area. Patratu and Patherdih freight depots are also undertaking the ‘B category’ unloadable wagon repair. Besides, in situ repair of unloadable wagons are being done at different colliery sidings.

Coaching Activities: Dhanbad and Gomoh are the major coaching depots of this division. Many important and prestigious express trains like Black Diamond, Ganga Damodar, Ganga Sutlej, Swarnrekha and Alleppey Express are primarily maintained by the division. Besides, Barkakana & Singrauli other two coaching depots also maintains express & passenger trains. Dhanbad, Gomoh, Barkakan & Chopan stations are the nominated watering points in the division. The total Coach holding of the division amounts to about 622 coaches which includes all PCVs and OCVs.

C&W department also maintains three “B” class ARTs which are based at Gomoh, Chopan & Patherdih. All the coaches have vestibuled facility. ART/Gomoh, ART/Chopan & ARMV/Chopan are certified with ISO Certification 9001:2008.

SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS / ACHIEVEMENTS : 1. Calibration of pressure gauges by Master Gauge

In view to detect all defective pressure gauges fitted in Dhanbad based SLRs coaches, calibration by Master Gauge has been started at Dhanbad depot to make error free. Now each and every gauge is being tested before fitting.

2. Testing of BP air hose:

Dhanbad, Gomoh and Barwadih depot has started testing of BP air hoses. For this, a test bench has been developed to test the BP & FP air hoses at a pressure of 10 kg/cm2 to minimize the enroute bursting of BP air hose. With the help of this, BP and FP air hose are being tested and kept as the pool for replacement of defective pipes during maintenance.

3. Screen printing destination board

In-house Screen printing technique has been developed at Dhanbad & Gomoh depot to improve the aesthetic look of destination boards of coaches in lieu of hand painted destination boards. Now these destination boards have been provided in all primary based Mail/Express trains.

4. Development and introduction of gauges

(a) Gadget for in situ changing bolster spring has been developed at Coaching Complex, Dhanbad. Using this gadget Bolster spring can be changed in 30 minutes which otherwise would have changed in sick line after detachment.

(b) Gadget for movement of damaged wheel/axle has been developed by ART/Gomoh. Using

this gadget any damage wheel/axle can be simply loaded on the gadget after lifting and section can be cleared.

(c) Development of ‘Go – No Go gauge for checking bronze wearing piece of coaches has been done at Coaching depot, Dhanbad.

(d) Introduction of Micrometer Gauge and Magnetic Dial Gauge for measuring Journal dia

and lateral play of CTRB has been started at ROH shed, Barwadih.

(e) As an endeavor to improve reliability of freight stock running over Dhanbad Division

Pakur C&W sick line, Howrah Division has been given a set of CBC checking gauges by Dhanbad Division to improve the reliability of wagons being repaired.

5. Refurbishment of Pantry Car of 13351/13352 DHN-Alappuzha Express

Six pantry cars running in 06 rakes of Dhanbad-Alappuzha Express have been successfully refurbished at Dhanbad coaching sick line. Extensive fumigation and pest control, garbage

removing, cleaning of whole kitchen, all electrical fittings, gas fittings, all pipe line fittings, trimming & carpentry works etc have been ensured. Replacement of all damage/deficiency items, 02 times fogging and 02 times pest control for 4-5 hours are ensured. Only division in ECR to have undertaken this refurbishment.

6. Development of Buffer lifting and lowering Gadget

Dhanbad coaching depot has developed a buffer gadget for easy lifting and lowering of the buffer. It will help in reducing the time for buffer changing.

7. On the perspective of Safety (i). Red Protection ‘STOP’ is made with Retro reflective Fluorescent Sticker,

which makes it shining on precipitating light. (ii). LED based RED Protection lamp is used during Night time. (iii). Line lock facility made with iron Arch Lever and vertical lever with proper

locking arrangement. It is being ensured at both ends during maintenance. (iii). Distribution of Helmet amongst the line staff of coaching & freight depots. 8. Counseling on Driver & Guards

Time to time, counseling of Drivers and Guards at crew lobbies of Dhanbad, Gomoh, Gujhandi and Barwadih by C&W supervisors to upgrade their knowledge about enroute trouble shooting like brake binding, hot axle and train parting. In this regard, a technical guide lines has been prepared by division and distributed amongst the crew for seeking necessary guidance & trouble shooting on the above subject. Besides, joint foot plate inspection in Gujhandih-Gurpa ghat section (1-80 gradient) are conducted to observe the enginemanship.

9. Commissioning of Wheel Impact Load Detector (WILD)

WILD has been successfully commissioned at Chianki station on the Barwadih-Garwa Road section in April’2011. It is playing a critical role in detecting any type of load impact from wheels of running trains on the track, thereby reducing chances of rolling stock and track failures. For this, one terminal has been provided at Carriage Control, Dhanbad for monitoring of trains. Since the start of the WILD, total 8 wagons were detached till 10/05/11 due to flat place.

10. Introduction of Job Card at Dhanbad

Job card for under gear and upper gear examination during every pit maintenance has been introduced at Dhanbad on and from 16/03/12 for the first time in ECR. Distribution of work of every staff including the values of various parameters has been clearly mentioned in the job card to develop more awareness and responsibility amongst the staff & supervisors.

11. Checking of buffers of coaching stock

A massive drive was undertaken in Jan,2012 to check the buffers of coaches being maintained by Dhanbad Division. A total of 1800 buffers in 450 coaches were checked, out of which 49 were found defective and changed. Dhanbad Division was the first in ECR to undertake this drive successfully.

12. Repair of unloadable wagons

For the first time in ECR, repair of unloadable wagons was outsourced at five sidings from May-11 (West Bokaro/Chainpur, RCM/Khalari, Bina/Krishnashila, Dudhichuha & Jayant/Shaktinagar). Since the start of the repair work, a total of 8418 wagons equivalent to 143 rakes have been successfully repaired in 2011-12 which amounts to an additional loading of 0.5 million tones.

13. Award for detection of abnormalities & good workmanship

During rolling in examination, abnormalities like hot box, hanging parts, skidded wheels, adopter & spring shifted etc were detected by C&W staff of GMO, BRWD & KTH (Hot box:7, Spring shifted:18, Bk.binding:2, Adopter shifted:3, Door defect:3, Axle box defect:2 & wheel flat place:2). If these abnormalities would not have been detected, it could have been serious safety hazards. For their commendable job, each staff were has been awarded with five hundred rupees. Besides, staff & supervisors were encouraged by group cash award for their good workmanship. During 2011-12, total 37 staff have been awarded and 07 Group awards given.

14. Outsourcing in different area

Mechanized cleaning at Dhanbad depot has been outsourced w.e.f. 24/12/10 for a period of three years.

On Board House Keeping System in Dhanbad-Alleppy & Ganga Sutlaj express has also been started from 24/12/10 for a period of three years.

Washing of linens of AC coaches of Dhanbad originating 04 trains i.e. 13307/13308, 13329/13330, 13331/13332 & 13351/13352 express has been stared from 16/09/11 for a period of three years including loading/unloading as well as transporting of linens from Dhanbad coaching complex to trains on different platforms of Dhanbad station and vice versa.

Pest & rodent control contract has been outsourced for Dhanbad, Gomoh, Barkakan, Singrauli depot for a period of 03 years.

Road Contract for transporting BG ICF bogie has been outsourced w.e.f. 27.10.11 for a period of three years.

15. Running of extra coaches with Express & Passenger trains

Keeping in view the heavy rush, total 734 nos. extra coaches have been provided so far at Dhanbad during Apr’11 to Mar’12 in different trains like 13307, 13329, 13331, 15027 & DHN-Sindri passenger to liquidate the heavy rush, by which more or less 99,048 extra passengers have been accommodated.

16. Labeling of blankets

Labeling on blankets has been completed in April, 2012 for the first time in ECR. Cleaning of blankets is carried out after 02 months. All labels contain unique blanket code and ‘Due Dry Washing Date’ which will help in proper & scheduled cleaning of blankets.

17. Pest & Rodent control Drive

A special drive involving divisional officers on Pest & Rodent control, Cleanliness of coaches & linen, availability of passenger amenities was launched at Dhanbd from 14/04/12 to 29/04/12 for elimination of Pests and Rodents from AC coaches. A total of 17 rakes were taken up during this drive.

18. Vent hole checking of angle cock

A special drive was launched for removal of cap from angle cock vent holes on this division from 20/04/12 to 12/05/12. Out of 507 trains checked (originating from different division), 242 wagons were detected having caps on angle cocks. Maximum numbers of plastic caps were detected from loads that had originated on Jabalpur, Asansol, Mughalsarai, Adra and Raipur divisions.

19. Fittings of wire mesh in ventilators To prevent fire in the GS & WGSCN coaches, ventilators cleaning are carried out in each trip. Stainless steel wire mesh has been provided in ventilators of 280 out of 385 coaches till 22/05/12.
