Description # Students &Qualifications

Access to justice Public interest work

PBSC has joined with leading organizations to launch a major social media fundraising campaign to increase access to justice. At some point all Canadians will find themselves in need of legal help, but access to justice isn't equal for everyone. The pursuit of equal justice can be financially devastating, even for those with good incomes. PBSC and our partners are doing what we can to rebalance the scales, but the need is great and our resources are limited.

‘Flip Your Wig for Justice’ is a new, pledge-based fundraising campaign taking place in Ontario next spring. This initiative has two goals: PBSC will partner with other access to justice organizations to raise money for access to justice in Ontario. A second goal of the campaign is to raise awareness about access to justice issues. Inspired by the traditional barrister’s wigs of our profession, participants in the

campaign will make a difference by wearing a wild, wacky wig for the day, or by sponsoring someone else to wear a wig.

The fundraising coordinator will play an important role, organizing this new initiative at U of T and creating momentum for the campaign. His or her duties may include the following:

Working with the publicity coordinator to promote ‘Flip Your Wig for Justice’; Coming up with creative ways to gain support for the campaign and to raise awareness about access to justice issues during the campaign period; Recruiting ‘Flip Your Wig’ for Justice partners; Planning ‘Flip Your Wig for Justice’ events and activities to take place during the campaign; and Working closely with the chapter and PBSC National to launch this initiative.

Please note that there will be opportunities to work and network with the other access to justice organizations in Ontario, including the CCLA, PBLO, OJEN, METRAC and others!

The Envisioning Global LGBT Rights Project is a multi-disciplinary human rights project with a broad mandate to document discrimination against sexual minorities abroad. Its goals include facilitating the development and enhancement of LGBT rights by supporting international partners and LGBT activists with legal and social research. Students involved in the project develop working reports on the state of LGBT rights in a variety of different jurisdictions (including the Caribbean, Africa, and India). Students also assist foreign legal challenges by providing needed legal research assistance; including comparative constitutional law.

The project involves building dynamic working relationships with leading human rights lawyers in Canada and abroad. Students have the opportunity to work on dynamic and evolving LGBT research in the selected jurisdictions as they respond to the needs of international partners actively engaged in advocacy work.

Students will work with the Legal Team in Canada, comprised of lawyers and activists who are involved in LGBT human rights and constitutional right both in Canada and internationally.
