1. About the Programme
The East Midlands Leadership Academy is pleased to announce the Organisational Development (OD) Essentials
Programme 2016/17 in partnership with Frontline. Frontline have a long history of excellence in understanding the
needs in today’s NHS and providing innovative approaches, which are both engaging, and adaptable to both
individual and organisational requirements.
This is a creative and innovative approach to OD development, designed for organisations to really shape what
OD across the service needs to look like going forward. Whether we are comfortable with change or not, it’s clear
that we need to start thinking differently if we are to continue to deliver person centred care that is free at the
point of delivery. This OD programme is not about quick fix solutions but a belief that lasting value comes from
working with you to design real practical solutions; practical solutions that enable and engage the OD community
to make change happen.
System thinking…
However, this is not just about increasing OD expertise, but an opportunity to work to the 5 Year Forward View - a
‘once in a life time’ focus on change and for OD to support real systems work. The programme will not only have
input on what needs to be done but how we need to be.
A new era for the NHS means changing where and how we add value to patients; shifting from what we have
traditionally been good at to what we need to be good at in the future.
‘’The more we cling to past practices, the more we deepen the crisis and prevent solutions.’’ – Margaret
Wheatley
Our approach to Organisational Development is therefore about:
taking a systemic approach to improving and enabling sustained organisational performance/success
across the region
identifying, designing, implementing and embedding different ways of working and thinking across the
system
getting to the root of relevant challenges to understand how best to tackle these and using this
understanding to communicate, influence and work with others across teams and organisations to bring
about and sustain improvement and the benefits gained
sharing learning and continuing to build on success
The OD Essentials programme has been designed to support and challenge you in doing formal OD work as well
as bringing in OD thinking and approaches to existing professional capabilities i.e. clinical practice or leadership
practice.
The programme will blend theory, practice and application within and between the formal elements of the
programme, ensuring that learning is applied to real OD challenges and issues to build individual and
organisational confidence and capability in OD practice.

2. Benefits
For the individual:
The programme allows you to develop the skills, knowledge, attitudes and behaviours to succeed and
operate successfully as an OD professional
The programme is different. The programme is about self-directed learning, peer delivery and assessment
you will provide evidence to each other, through successful delivery of modules and projects. Your peers
will provide valuable feedback and support
Provides a supportive place to develop skills for all regardless of your experience or seniority
Facilitates real collaboration with colleagues across the system to create exciting solutions. You will build
your own support network with other participants throughout the regional healthcare system
The programme is situation-relevant, tackling real live OD issues that are needed right here right now
Allows the development of a critical awareness of your personal approach to OD, your biases, blind spots,
attitude to diversity and how you will continue to develop your practice
Creates a focus on your behaviours and challenges to improve outcomes and patient care; the
programme offers real experiential support and learning
The programme uses state-of-the-art online learning
Brings the opportunity to become part of the EMLA’s wider membership, to share insights and experiences
and continue to develop with others
For the organisation:
The programme was designed with the NHS, in the NHS for those working in and with healthcare
It was designed with national experts in health and organisational design and performance
The programme helps participants develop essential OD skills and support individuals into their next role
The programme helps organisations better meet operational challenges of today and enable change for
tomorrow
The programme offers support and learning to build personal, confidence and capabilities among its
participants
Good OD practice will improve recruitment, retention and reduce costs through creating the relevant
tools
5
3. Outcomes
The programme will deliver:
An understanding of, and the skills to apply, a comprehensive OD curriculum that works effectively across
the system
An understanding through experience of the whole health economy and where OD sits
Real work outputs for organisations through the various projects and work streams
Support in implementing effective OD across the region through the building of confidence and
capability
Development of existing work in continuing to grow a supportive community of practice amongst OD
professionals
4. Programme detail
People know what’s needed!
‘’Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn’’ – Benjamin Franklin
The programme is real immersion in OD through practical experience and delivery. Good OD is about providing
solutions to what’s really needed, right now. This programme seeks to really use the regional NHS community to
shape delivery and make it relevant and meaningful. You will have the ability to design and deliver a programme
that really is needs met.
Order of play (see diagram 4.1)
“No one learns as much about a subject as one who is forced to teach it.” ― Peter F. Drucker
Initial launch - programme overview, rationale (and receive psychometric feedback)
Set up of PODS - 7 diverse PODS will be set up to each examine one aspect of OD from our model (see
below). This examination (immersion) involves you visiting each-others’ organisations to investigate what
actually happens in your chosen aspect. You will be getting a real life view of OD across the system
PODs will be able to access a new online Learning Management System (LMS) with a populated virtual
campus containing resources for each of the building blocks
Each POD will work alongside Frontline to design and deliver the associated module to the rest of the
group – a co-delivery approach. Not only is each POD learning OD essentials, you also deliver and
facilitate the wider group’s learning – this is a great way to practice those all-round OD skills including
facilitation; it also creates an incentive for you to know the ‘stuff’!!!

Diagram 4.1
The 7 programme modules provide a joined up approach to review and map any organisation, and understand
how the different aspects impact on performance and system strategy implementation. The modules therefore will
cover:
7
5. Leadership
The ability of leadership to influence and deliver value:
values & culture - the way in which any organisational norms interact
work processes & business systems - the sequence of activities through which resources are transformed
to meet end user needs
organisation, team & job shape - the way in which accountabilities are organised and distributed
individual, group & team competence - the capability of people (individually and as teams) to carry out
the strategy
management processes & systems - the key processes through which leaders influence what actually
happens
recognising people - the way in which behaviour, capability and/or results are reinforced
It is the “people initiatives” which will support the translation of any strategy into results.
These will provide the 6 headings for the programme modules: (leadership is overarching and provides our 7th
aspect)
6. Practical application of skills
’There can be no learning without action and no action without learning’’ – Reg Revans
In addition to the design and delivery of the modules, each POD will be tasked with looking at designing a
significant and innovative OD project that practically supports your individual organisation. This will be designed
and delivered by you with the support and co-coaching of another POD through the formation of ‘2 POD action
learning groups’. These will be faciliated sessions for you to share and shape your personal projects and learning
on the programme.
7. Assessment
learning will take place throughout the programme through accessing the resources identified. The online
learning (LMS) will provide the foundation to your group learning. It can assess individual frequency and
access to the system although we are not proposing online tests - proof of learning will be in successful
delivery
you will take responsibility and accountability for the areas you have chosen to focus on. This includes
your OD project and the successful delivery of your POD OD aspect
you will assess and be assessed by your ALS peers within the learning sets with the full support of your set
advisers

Your commitment, commitment from your Line Manager/Sponsor
If you are accepted onto the programme you will be required to attend all of the programme dates and commit
one hour a week* additional time to work on the design and delivery of Module content as well as your individual
projects.
You will need to identify a sponsor. This could be your Line Manager but doesn’t need to be. Your sponsor is
responsible for supporting you through the programme and mentoring you in relation to the project that you will
undertake throughout the programme. You may wish to have a discussion at this point about what your project
could be.
Line Managers / sponsors will be required to support your application by completing the specified question, and
will be required to sign the application form to show that they give authorisation for you to be released from your
role on all of these dates.
* This additional time is to give an indication of the time commitment you will be expected to give to progress the
design and delivery of the modules, your individual projects and engage with the learning management system.
This additional time, however, is flexible to fit around your other work commitments. There will be times when there
is more pressure in the system and more commitment is needed. There may also be times in which you need to
build up the additional study time rather than allocating one hour per week, in order to progress a particular
aspect of your individual project, or, when you are working towards the delivery of your chosen POD aspect.

Terms, Conditions and Cancellation Policy – Important Please Read
There is no cost to attend if you are a fully subscribed EMLA member.
Where a programme requires full attendance over a series of workshops, attendance at all elements of these
programmes is expected. Failure to attend all sessions will have an impact on both personal development and
programme delivery and will impact on the individual’s opportunity to access any future development offers.
