JEwEl IN thE CRowN The friendly boutique resort town of Orewa Beach is gateway to the Hibiscus Coast and north Auckland. There is a great sense of local community, which provides plenty of leisure activities from cycling, walking and running tracks, snow skiing, water sports galore, go karting, cinemas and light railway.

The atmosphere is leisurely; Orewa Beach has retained its holiday destination feel largely due to its natural green and coastal environment. Wenderholm Regional Park located to the north of Orewa is one of Auckland’s best examples of mainland coastal forest which contains bush tracks, swimming and lots of picnic areas under magnificent pohutukawa trees. But it is Orewa Beach itself that is the biggest draw card because of its safe swimming aspect and its surfing and fishing. Orewa Beach has its own surf club and the long beach lends itself to most water sports including kayaking, surfing, windsurfing and kite surfing.

towN CENtREOrewa seaside town centre has a village-style atmosphere with a variety of boutique retail stores, gift shops, jewellery and deli-style gourmet cafés. Orewa is the business service hub for Auckland north; with convenient motorway exits right on its doorstep and only 25 minutes north of the Auckland harbour bridge.

1 Hatfields Beach. Is a small sandy beach with rocks to either side. Vehicle boat ramp and public toilet adjacent to beach.

2 Alice Eaves Scenic Reserve. Old North Rd, Orewa. 30-45mins. Fine remnant stand of native kauri and broadleaf forest at northern end of Orewa. Lower track beside Nukumea Stream to Kensington Park suitable for wheelchairs. Good examples of Kauri and Puriri. Pa site at Hillcrest Rd entrance.

3 Orewa Esplanade Reserve. S.H.1./Hibiscus Coast Highway, Orewa. 45-60mins. Paved walking track along northern half of beachfront reserve. Runs from Arundel Reserve, at northern end, to the town centre by traffic lights.

4 Orewa Beach. The most dramatic on the coast. Over 2km of clean sandy beach. Orewa Beach is a busy beach in summer with swimmers, waterskiers, boats, windsurfers and canoes. Good surf with a surf club at the eastern end.

5 Orewa Millennium Walkway. Orewa Township. 2hrs. ‘Oval’ walkway. Start from south bridge, follow estuary to Centreway Reserve, turn left down Riverside Rd and cross road into Grant Park, along Hatton Rd through Victor Eaves Park to link with Eaves Bush returning to south bridge via Orewa beachfront. Follow the blue footprints.

6 Te Ara Tahuna - Orewa estuary walk and cycleway. Beautiful coastal estuary walk and cycleway. Sealed track which crosses five bridges. 1-2 hr walk. Follows the estuary coast line along the Orewa Western Reserve to Orewa West and crosses over to Millwater Parkway, Silverdale to reconnect via the Orewa south bridge.

7 Pohutukawa Reserve/Orewa Estuary. Pohutukawa Ave and Moffat Rd, Orewa. 30-45mins. Grass reserve walkway on south side of estuary running from Orewa south bridge to Jelas Rd/Kingsway School into Totara Views subdivision.

8 Amorino Reserve. S.H.1/Hibiscus Coast Highway, Red Beach. 15-30mins. Reserve walkway beside Orewa estuary mouth, linking with surrounding residential streets. Start of Whangaparaoa Peninsula’s ‘Coastal Walkways’. Follow signs on lamp posts.

9 Red Beach. So named for the ginger-coloured shells, is also a surf beach with a surf club.

10 Red Beach Reserves. Vista Motu and Marellen Dr, Red Beach. 30-45mins. An informal walk between various reserves in the centre of Red Beach. From Red Beach Lookout Reserve take walkways into Higham Ferrers Reserve, cross Bay Vista Dr into Gilshennan Reserve, follow path to right and follow walkways to Rushden Tce and Red Beach Park, cross Marellen Dr to beach.

11 Red Beach section of Coastal Walkway. Ngapara St – Duncansby Rd, Red Beach. 30mins. Walk along beach from Ngapara St to Duncansby Rd. May be restricted at high tide.

12 Stanmore Bay Beach. The second longest beach on the coast. There is a boat launching ramp off the sand for small boats.

13 Stanmore Bay Beach. Cooper Rd and Stanmore Bay Reserve, Stanmore Bay. 15-30mins. Walk along beach from Cooper Rd/Lea Reserve to Stanmore Bay Park. Cross arch bridge at eastern end of park.

14 Stanmore Bay Reserve to Manly Beach. Stanmore Bay Rd – Moreton Dr, Manly. 15-30mins. Walk from end of Stanmore Bay Rd and take track up through historic cemetery. Left into Ardern Ave and cross to next accessway. Turn right into Swann Beach Rd to the top corner and next accessway with steps through to Hurdlow Pl and Moreton Dr / beach.

15 Big Manly Beach. Safe sandy beach. The home of the Manly Yacht Club which is suitable for small boats.

16 Manly Beach to Tindalls Beach. Brown St – Tindalls Bay Rd, Tindalls Beach. 15-30mins. From end of Brown St, walk along beach (restricted at high tide) to boatramp. Cross footbridge by sheds to accessway to The Crescent. Follow road round Crown Reserve to Tindalls Beach.

17 Tindalls Beach. North facing sandy beach. There is good fishing from the rocks at the western end.

18 Tindalls Beach to Matakatia Beach. 15-30mins. From centre of beach, take series of accessways through to Whangaparaoa Rd. Cross road and turn right to top of hill, then left into reserve accessway down to Matakatia Beach.

19 Gulf Harbour. Shakespear Rd – Gulf Harbour Dr, Gulf Harbour. Walkways progressing as Gulf Harbour estate develops. Network utilises reserves, roads and runs through the golf course. Range of short and long walks. Toilets at boatramp.

20 Gulf Harbour Marina. Full facilities including fuel, chandler, painters, boat builders, engineers, long/short term storage, berthage, trailer, boat storage and parking. 24hrs security, super yacht berthage, accommodation, restaurant, bars, golf course, boating club, 1000 Berths.

21 Fisherman’s Rock/Pacific Parade. Fisherman’s Rock Reserve, Army Bay. 60-90mins. Coastal clifftop walk from Fisherman’s Rock Reserve to eastern end of Pacific Parade. Two clifftop staircases and stone ramp provide access onto rocky foreshore. Access between Fisherman’s Rock and Pacific Parade Reserves via foreshore, restricted at high tide.

22 Army Bay. Provides good access to reef diving and fishing area. Check tides before you leave and only venture on the outgoing tide.

23 Shakespear Regional Park. Army Bay, Whangaparaoa Peninsula. Various marked tracks ranging from 1–2hrs around farm park at end of peninsula. Includes Fairy Falls bush walk. Sweeping views of Hauraki Gulf and Islands.

24 Tiritiri Matangi Island. Take ferry from Gulf Harbour Marina. Open sanctuary for some of New Zealand’s rare and endangered plant and bird species. ‘Tiri’ supports Saddlebacks, Kiwi, Takahe, Bellbird and other native birds no longer seen on mainland. A variety of walking tracks cover island.

25 Okoromai Bay. Safe swimming spot. There are mud flats at low tide.

26 Matakatia. Great views across the harbour to Auckland. Area is flat with a muddy bottom.

27 Little Manly Beach. Short tree lined beach offering excellent fishing from the rocks. Walkways at South Ave – Little Manly Beach, Little Manly. 5-15mins. Shore reserve and clifftop walk from South Ave to beach.

28 Whangaparaoa Town Centre to Stanmore Bay beach. Town centre

– Brightside Rd, Stanmore Bay. 15-30mins. From town centre via Palmgreen Court and reserve, walkway to Rata Rd. Walkway half way along Rimu Rd on right leads into Stanmore Bay Park past Leisure Centre. Cross Brightside Rd to beach side of reserve.

29 Arkles Bay. Is a very sheltered, sandy beach and provides entrance to the Weiti River.

30 Ferry Road Reserve. Ferry Rd, Arkles Bay. 5-15mins. Short reserve walk through coastal bush to foreshore of Weiti River near mouth of river. Timber steps at top. Slippery rocks on foreshore.

31 Fairhaven Walk. Wade River Rd, Arkles Bay. 30-45mins. Rough dead end walking track off end of Wade River Rd past boat club on banks of Weiti River flanked by native bush with some big puriri trees.

32 Okura Walk. Duck Creek Rd, Stillwater or Haigh Access Rd, Redvale. 2-2.5hrs from Stillwater through muddy pastures and along foreshore to historic Dacre cottage (composting toilets alongside). 3-3.5hrs from Okura (Haigh Access Rd) through Scenic Bush Reserve. Coastal walk between Weiti and Okura Rivers. Boots required.



1 Goat Island Walkway. Goat Island Rd, Leigh. 1.2 hr return walk behind Auckland University Marine Laboratory climbing farm hill marked by white poles. Follows cliff top through patches of coastal forest with views to outer Hauraki Gulf, Goat Island and Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve.

2 Matakana – Omaha Walk & Cycleway. A 1.5km to 7km track that passes through vineyards, orchards, farms and olive groves that starts from Broadlands Drive, Omaha through Jones Road connecting to Takatu Road, Matakana. There is another section of track that connects Omaha to Point Wells.

3 Tawharanui Regional Park. Takatu Rd, Matakana. 588ha Open Sanctuary protected by a predator-proof fence. A range of coastal walks.

4 Scandrett Regional Park. Scandrett Rd, Snells Beach. Various walks with links to Martins Bay Holiday Park.

5 Scotts Landing. Ridge Rd, Mahurangi East. Walkway linking several reserves including Mahurangi and Burton Wells Scenic Reserves and Mahurangi Regional Park with historic Scott homestead. Some tidal sections. Sign with map at Williams St carpark. Range of short and long walks.

6 Mahurangi East – Poplar Bay. Mahurangi Peninsula. 30 mins one way. Walking track at Mahurangi Regional Park on headland east of Scotts Landing between Poplar and Lagoon Bays. Access by boat only.

7 Mansion House. Kawau Island. A series of walks from Mansion House to old copper mine and School House Bay. View Sir George Grey’s house, grounds and wallabies. Take ferry from Sandspit. Range of short and long walks.

8 Wenderholm Regional Park. S.H.1 just north of Waiwera turnoff. Waiwera. Three tracks ranging from 30 mins to 2 hrs between Waiwera and Puhoi Rivers. Historic Couldrey House.

9 Waiwera Beach. Waiwera means ‘Hot Water’ in Maori, The home of Waiwera Thermal Hot Spa Resort. Short walk, 30-45 mins along beachfront reserve from boatramp to campground. Tree stumps remain from early plantings associated with development of hotsprings by Robert Graham. Return along beach or do circuit behind hotpools along Waiwera Pl.
