- FP7 R4SME project completed in February 2017- Tested Tocardo T2 tidal turbine technology at ORE Catapult- Project allowed ORE Catapult to build a 1MW test rig- Now well-positioned for:
- Deeper collaboration with the UK research community- Testing a wider range of tidal turbines- Component testing
Tidal-EC

Technologies of the RECODE project

• NOVA INNOVATION-led €20m H2020 funded project
• Nine European partners• Four Scotland-based partners• Five year project running until
June 2022• Builds on existing Shetland
Array• Six turbines moved into
different configurations to optimise array layouts
“This project will prove that the reliability and availability of tidal energy arrays can be increased significantly and that we can reduce the cost of tidal energy by at least 40%”
Simon Forrest

What next?
• Wave & tidal lags behind offshore wind in terms of maturity and cost
• However, huge potential remains; ORE Catapult sees wave and tidal as part of the wider Blue Economy and Blue Tech markets
• Oceans can provide our energy, do provide our food, support our means of trade and are a source of leisure
• Take any of these and they are dependent on understanding the environment, providing integrated infrastructure and maintaining an equilibrium
• ORE Catapult focuses on offshore renewables• At a high level the can be considered in isolation• At a lower level they are linked through vessel technology, offshore working
practices, port infrastructure, technology innovation, environmental impact and resource characterisation
• Technology needed to work offshore – automation, vessel efficiency, accurate navigation, seeing below the sea surface
• Applies equally to fishing, merchant shipping, leisure, etc. (binding synergies)• All need ports, access and supply chain in coastal communities that to date have
seen other industries decline
