A MESSAGE FROM

PASTOR FRED

Do you really mean what you say when you sing.....

'Take my Silver take my gold'

This is hymn #685 - Take My life That I May be. I wonder how many of us really

mean this. It is a pious sentiment but somehow I doubt its sincerity. But if you as an

individual really mean this, please come and see me.

'Ah how long I've panted, and my heart has fainted thirsting Lord for thee'

Hmm. I am sure that there have been times in all our lives when we have needed God's

assurance - but are these the words you would use? See hymn #775.

'Here I raise my Ebenezer: hither by thy help I come'

Huh? I don't know where to start concerning this line from Hymn #807, but I

challenge anyone who says they have done this.

'Chief of Sinners Though I Be'

Yes, I know that we are all broken and in need of God's salvation but somehow I can’t

help but think that this is a bit of pious boasting that reveals a false humility. Hymn #

609.

These are just three hymns that I was quickly able to find in our hymnal among many

others that reflect what someone else might say, but I have never found myself using

in my own prayers, have you? After all, Hymns are prayers set to music. I cannot help

but think that God has already heard it all and that God's invitation to prayer ought to

be a reflection of where we are right now at this moment in time. I doubt if flattery

counts with God, just a thought.

In Christ,

SUMMER MUSIC CAMP A SUCCESS!

The 3rd Annual Summer Music Camp was held July 19 – 23 and it was a great success. Thirty children in grades K–8 participated. On the final day of the camp the children presented the musical show about David & Goliath: “The Rockslinger and His Greatest Hit” to rave reviews! The camp would not have been a success without the tremendous assistance from Luci Hughes, Marlys and Sim Austin, Tim Hesson, Linda and Paul Kipps, Betty Walker, Marty and Ann Witthoefft, Pat ? Pastor Fred and Tammy Hammond. CHOIR ROOM FLOOR INSTALLATION Over the summer an oak laminate “floating floor” was installed over the old and distressed tile floor. The great part of this floor is that it may be easily removed if it ever needs replacing. Come by the choir room to see the how clean and smooth the new floor looks. You may be inspired to do a little dancing on it! UPCOMING EVENTS: Our choirs will resume rehearsals on Thursday, September 5th (Handbell Choir at 6:30 pm and Adult Choir at 7:30 pm.) All are invited to join! There’s always room for more in our choirs – no prior experience necessary. A CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PAGEANT will be held on Sunday, December 15th at the 10 am service. There will be a dinner & rehearsal on Wednesday, December 11th at 5:30 pm for the children participating. AN ADULT CHOIR CANTATA will be performed on Sunday, December 22nd at the 10 am service. The 4th ANNUAL SUMMER MUSIC CAMP will be held July 13 – 17, 2020. Please do not hesitate to contact me for more information about any of St. Luke Mu-sic Ministry programs. SANCTUARY FLOWERS

Would you like to place Flowers

on the Altar on Sunday?

If so, please sign up on the

Flower Chart in the Fellowship Hall.

Questions?

Please see the information below

or call the Office at 804-272-0486.

Flower Dedications

The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the Sunday Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers are used

to beautify our sanctuary and are a gift to God and those who attend Worship services.

Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor of” a

special person, an anniversary, birthday, birth, baptism or other special event. More than one person may find a

certain date important so flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday.

If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday service, arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed

directly from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered to the church. The flowers are yours to take home

after the service that Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or homebound members.

Please return the container the flowers are in to the church at your convenience.

The 2019 Flower Chart Calendar

The 2019 Flower Calendar is hanging in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday Altar Flowers, won’t you consider doing so? Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday. If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. Flowers can be planned for a date on or near your special date, to occur yearly. Just let us know and we will automatically add your info to the Flower Calendar each year. If you have any questions or would like more information about Altar Flowers, please contact Tammy in the office at 804-272-0486 or [email protected]. You can also contact Jean Stewart, our sacristan, at 804-276-2690. Thank you.

“God’s Work, Our Hand’s”

Rise Against Hunger Meal Packing Event

September 7, 2019, 9:30am to 11:30am

This year we are once again uniting with “Rise Against Hunger” (formerly Stop Hunger Now) to make meals

for the hungry throughout the world. We plan to break last year’s record of 23,544 meals!

We packaged that many meals in two hours. Wow! That’s a tremendous amount! We thank everyone that helped

us last year, our church members young and older and other friends of St. Luke. As you can see by the pictures

below, we worked hard but had a great time doing it! We hope to see you again this year on September 7th

from 9:30am to 11:30am. Our goal for this year is 26,776 meals!

“Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those

who trespass against us;” As we go into the world and care for those who do not have their

“daily bread” we also tell the wonderful love and life in Jesus Christ. We are fulfilling Jesus

command to go into all the world and tell the Good News of Jesus Christ to everyone!

What can I do besides helping pack the meals?

You can donate to our “Rise Against Hunger” project. We need to raise $7500.00.

Please write “ Rise Against Hunger” on the memo line of your check and make it out to St. Luke.

Please contact Marty Witthoefft to sign up to help pack the meals or is you have any questions.
