Due of the central importance of Easter to the Christian faith, the Catholic Church requires that all Catholics who have made their First Communion receive the Holy Eucha-rist sometime during the Easter season, which lasts through Pentecost Sunday, 50 days after Easter (Church Law extends the time when this duty may be fulfilled until Trinity Sunday, an extra week!). They should also take part in the Sacrament of Penance before receiving this Easter Communion. This reception of the Eucharist is a visible sign of our faith and our participation in the Kingdom of God. Of course, we should receive Communion as frequently as possible (as long as we are in the state of grace); this "Easter Duty" is simply the minimum requirement set by the Church.

BANNS OF MATRIMONY Please remember in your prayers those who are to be joined in the Sacrament of Marriage in the next few weeks:

George is mentioned in numerous historical texts, and Pope Gelasius claimed George was one of the saints "whose names are justly reverenced among men, but whose actions are known only to God." Born to a Roman officer and a Greek native, Georgios was raised to follow their Catholic faith. He became a Tribunus in Diocletian's army and later served in the imperial guard. In 303 the Emperor began an open persecution of Christians, and although Diocletian was willing to spare George for the sake of his close relationship with George’s father, George refused to sacrifice to the Roman gods. Expecting execution, George gave his money to the poor before being tortured and decapitated on April 23, 303 A.D. He is revered in both the East and the West. In English speaking countries he is known as the patron saint of England his cross (red on white background) can be found throughout England. St. George is depicted wearing Roman armor and holding a lance or fighting a dragon, which represents Christ's enemies. He is also our second patron after St. John (the first church in Shrub Oak) and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (our current church). St. George, Heroic Catholic soldier and defender of your Faith, you dared to criticize a tyrannical Emperor and were subjected to horrible torture. You could have occupied a high military position but you preferred to die for your Lord. Obtain for us the great grace of heroic Christian courage that should mark soldiers of Christ. Amen

First Holy Communion May the Lord bestow a special blessing upon our Seton School children who received First Holy Communion on April 14th. Congratulations to these children and their fami-lies! Ella Badini, Colin Berlinski, Marykate Brown, Adam Castaldi, William Clancy, Luke Delfico, Elena Diaz-Palatucci, Sophia Eremita, Kevin Fries, Nina Gjonaj, Alexis Keeler, Gavin Martin, Katelyn O’Reilly, Charles Pistoia, Cristina Rial, Andrew Roche, Daniel Stoll

A Note about Becoming Sponsors For Baptism and Confirmation

It is a great honor to be asked to be a sponsor for Baptism or Confirmation. The role of a “godparent” is to be an “other parent” in matters of our holy Faith. That is why sponsors must be practicing Catholics, 16 years of age or older (14 years old in the Archdiocese of New York), having received Catholic Confirmation and currently living a good Christian moral life. If the sponsor is married, that person must be in a valid Catholic Church marriage. One sponsor is required for Confirmation. It is customary to have two for Baptism, in which case one must be male and the other female. Parents may not be sponsors. A baptized non-Catholic may replace the second Baptism sponsor as a Christian witness. Non-Christians may not be Sponsors. Former Catholics may not be sponsors. A nominated sponsor is asked to get certification from his/her current parish. This is a declaration by a priest/deacon that the individual is qualified to be a sponsor according to Church Law. To be so certified, the individual must be a current parishioner of the particular parish where the certification is being sought, and be known to the priest/deacon as being a faithful practicing Cath-olic, attending Mass there weekly. Those away at college or graduate school or in the military should seek certification from their campus ministries or chaplains. Unfortunately, at times, family members or friends are cho-sen to be sponsors with good intentions, but are found to be ineligible according to Church Law. Also, more and more, people seem to think that they are still “parishioners” of their childhood parish, where they attended school or re-ceived sacraments years ago, while no longer living in the area or attending Mass there regularly. It is important for all individuals to be active members of their local Catholic faith communities. Here, at Seton, Certificates of Sponsorship are given by the pastor to registered members of the parish who are practicing Catholics, and who meet the above criteria. Please see the pastor after Mass on Saturday evening or Sunday to inquire about getting a certificate.
