Changing My Mind Jesus was a rabbi or teacher. People came to hear what he had to say. Some liked what he said and followed him. Others heard him, thought he was crazy and left. Those in places of authority in the church like the chief priests, elders, scribes and Pharisees didn’t usually like what he said but they kept coming back. Mostly they were trying to gather evidence against him. Jesus used several different methods when he was teaching the crowds. Often he used parables. A parable is a story that teaches a lesson. Many times he would tell a parable and then ask those who were listening to him a question about the parable. In Matthew’s Gospel that we hear today, Jesus does just that. He tells the story of two sons. The father asks each of them to go out and work in the vineyard. The first one said he would not go, but later changed his mind and went to work. The second one said “Yes sir” but didn’t go. Jesus asked the crowd which of the two sons did the father’s will. They answered that the first one did the father’s will. It is interesting how Jesus makes those listening to him think. He doesn’t usually give a response to his own question, rather invites the answer. He engages his listeners to look at what he has presented and make up their own minds. Once they have voiced their opinions Jesus responds. He turns the situation presented back on them. Can they see themselves in the story? Jesus uses the same method today with me. Every time I hear or read the Gospel, I am invited into the story of Jesus. The parable may not be as pertinent to my life today, but the message is. Do I do the will of my Father? Do I profess to do it, but not really live it? Am I a living example to others of what it means to live the will of my Father? Do I say no but later regret my choice and change my mind? Jesus is posing these questions to me today. He also tells me that I have people in my life who point out the
way of righteousness but sometimes I ignore them. Jesus gives me the chance over and over again to change my
mind, my way of living, and to believe in him and follow his example. Do I allow Jesus and his message to change
my mind?

Our Weekly Reflection/Nuestra reflexión seminal Mrs. (Sra.) Terry Navarro
A menudo usaba parábolas.

FAMILIAR INSIGHTS Spiritual teachers tend to repeat themselves, and to repeat other teachers. Maybe there really aren’t that many different truths to tell. Just a lot of slow, sleepy human beings—like us—who need to hear the basics over and over. Consider today’s readings. People complain God isn’t “fair,” and Ezekiel answers that God is more than fair. People choose their own fates, and people can change. Even evildoers can turn, do right, and live. “Actions speak louder than words.” A fresh new insight? Hardly. Paul tells the Philippians that he would truly be encouraged if those who claimed to be believers would, in fact, look to others’ interests and not their own. “The proof of the pudding is in the eating.” A novel idea? I don’t think so. In Jesus’ story of the farmer and his sons, everyone knows that the one who said he wouldn’t work—but did—is way ahead of the one who said he would work—but didn’t. “Talk is cheap.” Heard that before?

SAINT THÉRÈSE OF THE CHILD JESUS (1873‐1897)
October 1 “The cornerstone’s dated 1872, but the stained glass is much later,” explained the pastor, astonished when his visitor accurately dated it to just before the Great Depression, explaining, “The window for the Little Flower”—Thérèse’s nickname—“gives it away.” From her canonization in 1925, her statues and windows adorn most churches where European immigrants worshiped. Entering Carmel at fifteen, victim of tuberculosis at twenty‐four, Thérèse proposed her “Little Way” to sanctity: doing ordinary tasks with extraordinary love. Thus ordinary Catholics, many of whom had lost loved ones to tuberculosis, embraced her. Though she never left her cloister, this Carmelite’s spiritual communion and devoted correspondence with missionaries earned her the title Patroness of Missions. Her autobiography, Story of a Soul, continuously in print since her death, chronicles her prayerful perseverance through doubt and caused her to be the youngest person ever named a Doctor of the Church. Countless physical healings and spiritual conversions testify to her fulfillment of her deathbed promise: “After my death, I will let fall a shower of roses. I will spend my heaven doing good upon earth!” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Did you ever notice how often the angels are referred to during Mass? We commonly meet them in the Confiteor (“I ask blessed Mary, every virgin, all the angels and saints”), prefaces (“with angels and archangels and the whole company of heaven”), the Roman Canon (“we pray that your angel may take this sacrifice”), and Eucharistic Prayer IV (“countless hosts of angels stand before you to do your will”). This week angels abound as we celebrate Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael on September 29th and will honor the Guardian Angels on October 2. September 29 was originally the feast day for Michael alone. Gabriel and Raphael joined him in the 1969 reform of the Church calendar. The celebration of the Guardian Angels has been observed since the sixteenth century in Spain. Pope Clement X assigned the feast to the first free day after St. Michael’s in 1670, and there it has remained. Take some time this week to reflect on these, God’s messengers and our protectors, and maybe even celebrate with a little angel food cake!
