My soul magnifies the Lord.He has filled the hungry with good things.

-- Mary, mother of Jesus

Food is a big deal. We need food to live.

But, even more than that, our relationship to food is a significant aspect of our humanity. Food, you might say, is something that gets down into our bones.

ere is something about the smell of garlic sautéing in a pan or cinnamon rolls warming in the oven that transcends biology. ere is something about the conversation and laughter around a dinner table that transcends sociology.

Food is more than merely fuel. And sharing a table with one another is more than merely force of habit.

God made us hungry creatures. And that is a wonderful thing.

We also need to know that God delights in satisfying our hunger. roughout Scripture, God's relationship with his people is oen described in terms of sharing a meal together. Whether it's the Passover meal instituted to remember God saving his people from Egypt or Jesus feeding the five thousand, or images of a "land flowing with milk and honey," Scripture is full of God's absolute joy in filling his hungry people with good things.

And, more importantly, God satisfies our hunger in a way that invites us into a deep relationship with him. He doesn't just feed us from a distance. Rather, he prepares a table for us and sits at the table with us. He longs to eat with us.

Let us worship!

F O R R E F L E C T I O N

Why do people come to church? As much as anything else, it is their experience of the absence of God that has brought them there in search of his presence, and the absence of God is just that which is not livable. The world hides God from us, or we hide ourselves from God, or for reasons of his own, God hides himself from us, but however you account for it, he is often more conspicuous by his absence than by his presence, and his absence is much of what we labor under and are heavy laden by. Maybe we should also speak of the doctrine of real absence because absence can be sacramental also, a door left open, a chamber of the heart kept ready and waiting. — Frederick Buechner, Telling the Truth: The Gospel as Tragedy, Comedy, and Fairy Tale

The greatness of the great Christian saints lies in their readiness to be questioned, judged, stripped naked and left speechless by that which lies at the center of their faith. — Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, The Wound of Knowledge

I do not want to be lonely all my life but people only make us lonelier by reminding us of God. — Flannery O'Connor, A Prayer Journal

C A L L T O W O R S H I P Adapted from Exodus 14 and John 6The people of God dwelled in the wilderness for forty years and said to Moses,

“What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt? Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”

But God has not abandoned his people in the wilderness! Jesus says,“I am the bread of life, whoever come to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

Let us go to Jesus, the giver of life!

Christians adopted thepractice of the lighting ofcandles during Advent in the Middle Ages. Another candle is lit during each of the four Sundays of Advent, signifying hope, love, joy,and peace.

L E C T I O S A C R A 1 Samuel 21:1-9Then David came to Nob to Ahimelech the priest. And Ahimelech came to meet David trembling and said to him, “Why are you alone, and no one with you?”

And David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has charged me with a matter and said to me, ‘Let no one know anything of the matter about which I send you, and with which I have charged you.’ I have made an appointment with the young men for such and such a place. Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever is here.”

And the priest answered David, “I have no common bread on hand, but there is holy bread – if the young men have kept themselves from women.” And David answered the priest, “Truly women have been kept from us as always when I go on an expedition… So the priest gave him the holy bread, for there was no bread there but the bread of the Presence, which is removed from before the Lord, to be replaced by hot bread on the day it is taken away.

Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord. His name was Doeg the Edomite, the chief of Saul's herdsmen. Then David said to Ahimelech, “Then have you not here a spear or a sword at hand? For I have brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste.” And the priest said, “The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you struck down in the Valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you will take that, take it, for there is none but that here.”

And David said, “There is none like that; give it to me.”

The word of the Lord! Thanks be to God!

“Lectio Sacra” means “sacred reading.” It has been the practice of the church for thousands of

years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. e

assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be

shaped by all of God’s word.

I N T E R L U D EMusical interludes are

included in our service in order to provide space for

reflection and worship.

C O N F E S S I O N O F S I NHoly Father, we come before you to confess our sins.Though you should guide us, we inform ourselves.Though you should rule us, we control ourselves.Though you should fulfill us, we console ourselves. For we think your ways too high, your will too hard, your power too remote, and your love too free. But they are not! And without them,we are of all people most miserable.

Almighty and most merciful Father, heal our confused minds with your word;heal our divided wills with your Spirit;heal our troubled souls with your love;heal our anxious hearts with your presence;all for the sake of your Son, who loved us and gave himself for us.

(You are invited to confess your sins silently.)

Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ.

Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing Robert Robinson 1758, John Wyeth 1813

Come, thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace;Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above.Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it, mount of God’s unchanging love.

Here I raise my Ebenezer; hither by thy help I’m come; And I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home.Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God;He, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood.

O to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be!Let thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee.Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; Here’s my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.

P R AY E R F O R PAT I E N C EAll-patient Father, gracious Spirit, merciful Son, it is hard to wait:to wait for things which seem to be good and right and glorifying to you;to wait for wants and to wait for needs.

Teach us, Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer, that when you are silent, you continue to be at work;that when you are silent, you continue to love us;that when you are silent, we can continue trust you.

Deepen our trust in you.Give us calm assurance in you.Give us rest in you.Prompt us to be more jubilant in hope, and more patient in times of trouble, worry, and want.

Teach us, Lord, to wait with faith and expectancy. And in our waiting, grow us, shape us, and change us.We pray this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for ose Searching for the Truth

Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life.

Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of

following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If

what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality

of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that

is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that

you promise. Amen.

Prayer for ose Struggling with Sin

Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn

from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and

living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings

so closely, and run with perseverance the race set

before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of

my faith. Amen.

Prayer of BeliefLord Jesus, I admit that I

am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more

loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt,

bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering

forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have

been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins

and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Receiving CommunionLord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me,I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living sacrifice. Amen.

Allergen-free communion elements (wafer ingredients: organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at the center of the communion table. To partake, please dip in either the wine (taller cup) or grape juice (shorter cup) on the table, then proceed through the line.

T H E S A C R A M E N T O F C O M M U N I O NCommunion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven’t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appearThe hour I first believed.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,Bright shining as the sun,We’ve no less days to sing God’s praiseThan when we’d first begun.

[1]  They set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the people of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt. [2] And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, [3]  and the people of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.” [4] Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not. [5] On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.” [6]  So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel, “At evening you shall know that it was the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, [7]  and in the morning you shall see the glory of the LORD, because he has heard your grumbling against the LORD. For what are we, that you grumble against us?” [8] And Moses said, “When the LORD gives you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning bread to the full, because the LORD has heard your grumbling that you grumble against him—what are we? Your grumbling is not against us but against the LORD.” [9]  Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, ‘Come near before the LORD, for he has heard your grumbling.’” [10] And as soon as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold,

the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud. [11]  And the LORD said to Moses, [12]  “I have heard the grumbling of the people of Israel. Say to them, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. Then you shall know that I am the LORD your God.’” [13] In the evening quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning dew lay around the camp. [14] And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as frost on the ground. [15] When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat. [16] This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Gather of it, each one of you, as much as he can eat. You shall each take an omer, according to the number of the persons that each of you has in his tent.’” [17]  And the people of Israel did so. They gathered, some more, some less. [18] But when they measured it with an omer, whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack. Each of them gathered as much as he could eat. [19] And Moses said to them, “Let no one leave any of it over till the morning.” [20] But they did not listen to Moses. Some left part of it till the morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them. [21]  Morning by morning they gathered it, each as much as he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it melted.
