Invocation (by Charles Fillmore, adapted)We are now in the presence of pure Being and

immersed in the holy Spirit of life, love, and wisdom. We acknowledge your presence and power, O blessed Spirit. In your divine wisdom now erase our perceived limitations and from your pure substance of love bring into manifestation our world, according to your perfect Law.

Congregation - And so it is.

Please be seated.

Ask the Pastor

A reading from the Wisdom of the Dalai Lama“Be kind whenever possible. It is always

possible.”

In these human words, God’s voice is heard. Thanks be to God.

A reading from the Wisdom of Ellen DeGeneres“Here are the values that I stand for: honesty,

equality, kindness, compassion, treating people the way I want to be treated and helping those in need. To me, those are traditional values.”

In these human words, God’s voice is heard. Thanks be to God.

Please rise as you are able.

GradualI Love to Tell the Story

I love to tell the story of unseen things above, of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love. I love to tell the story because I know it’s true; it satisfi es my longings as nothing else would do. I love to tell the story, ‘twill be my theme in glory, to tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love.

A reading from the Gospel according to Matthew5.21-24, 33, 37 (NLT)

“You have heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’ But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fi res of hell.

“So if you are presenting a sacrifi ce at the altar in the Temple and you suddenly remember that someone has something against you, leave your sacrifi ce there at the altar. Go and be reconciled to that person. Then come and off er your sacrifi ce to God.

“You have also heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not break your vows; you must carry out the vows you make to the LORD.’ But I say, do not make any vows!…

Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t.’ Anything beyond this is [evil].

In these human words, God’s voice is heard. Thanks be to God.

ResponseI Love to Tell the Story

I love to tell the story, for those who know it best seem hungering and thirsting to hear it, like the rest. And when, in scenes of glory, I sing the new, new song, ‘twill be the old, old story that I have loved so long. I love to tell the story, ‘twill be my theme in glory, to tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love.

Please be seated.

Words of Remembrance Celebrant: We remember that on the night of betrayal and desertion, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke the bread, and shared it with everyone present, saying…“Do this in memory of me.” In the same way, Jesus also took a cup, and off ered it to everyone present, saying, “This cup is the new covenant of all-inclusive love. Do this in memory of me.”

Invitation to Communion

Communion Song

For Everyone BornFor everyone born, a place at the table,to live without fear, and simply to be,to work, to speak out, to witness and worship, for everyone born, the right to be free, and God will delight when we are creators of justice and joy, compassion and peace: yes, God will delight when we are creators of justice, justice and joy!

For woman and man, a place at the table, revising the roles, deciding the share, with wisdom and grace, dividing the power, for woman and man, a system that’s fair, and God will delight when we are creators of justice and joy, compassion and peace: yes, God will delight when we are creators of justice, justice and joy!

For gay and for straight, a place at the table,a covenant shared, a welcoming space,a rainbow of race and gender and color, for gay and for straight, the chalice of grace, and God will delight when we are creators of justice and joy, compassion and peace: yes, God will delight when we are creators of justice, justice and joy!

SunBurst NewsSunBurst NewsAfrican American History Month: Emmet Till

Fourteen-year-old Emmett Till was visiting relatives in Money, Mississippi, on August 24, 1955, when he was accused of whistling at Carolyn Bryant, a white woman who was a cashier at a grocery store. Four days later, Bryant’s husband Roy and his half brother J.W. Milam kidnapped Till, beat him and shot him in the head. The men were tried for murder, but an all-white, male jury acquitted them. Till’s murder and open casket funeral galvanized the emerging Civil Rights Movement. Over six decades after Till’s brutal abduction and murder, in January 2017, Timothy Tyson, author of The Blood of Emmett Till and a senior research scholar at Duke University, revealed that in a 2007 interview Carolyn admitted to him that she had lied about Till making advances toward her. Sunshine Cathedral Annual Leadership Academy: Feb. 23-24

Every year we ask all staff , board, deacons, and key volunteers to attend a leadership retreat/academy. It’s usually on a Saturday, but this year is more extensive.

To keep it from being cost prohibitive, Sunshine Cathedral leaders are asked to pay only $100 for one person or $125 per couple (anyone for whom the cost is too onerous can contact us about alternative arrangements). That cost includes access to a third half day event.

For non-Sunshine Cathedral folk, there is an early registration cost of $150 per person (late registration is $200). But again, SC folk get a greatly reduced rate ($100 for one, $125 for a couple…AND, scholarships are available).

The conference is on a Thursday and Friday, with a special Saturday extra event added (Spiritual Direction training which is required in 2017 of MCC clergy but is open to all clergy, deacons, and others who are interested to learn more about spiritual direction). Conference registrants can take the Saturday workshop for free.

On Thursday, Feb 23, we will hear from Dr. Sheryl Kujawa-Holbrook, an Episcopal priest who is also the dean of a major seminary in California and who has done research and writing on church vitality. We will also have workshops led by SC leaders and in the evening a special worship service where Rev. Dewayne Davis of All God’s Children Community Church in Minneapolis will be speaking.

On Friday, Feb 24, we will hear from one of the most highly regarded Protestant preachers in the English speaking world (that isn’t hyperbole, that is the conclusion of various periodicals and academic surveys), Rev. Dr. Jim Forbes. He is the senior minister emeritus of Riverside Church in NYC, a preaching professor, and a highly sought after speaker (we were fortunate to get him!). His plenary session will be followed again by workshops led by SC leaders and in the evening will have another special worship service were our guest preacher will be Rev. Elder Pat Bumgardner, the senior minister of MCC NY and the founder/Ex Dir of the Global Justice Institute.

Then, on Saturday, an optional (and for conference registrants, FREE) three hour spiritual direction workshop. We will be focusing on best practices for justice work, church vitality, and spiritual care…in other words, MINISTRY. This will be not only a time of skills building and learning (and sharing best practices with other congregations who may be joining us) but also a time of spiritual renewal for all of us. This is the most extensive leadership training we have ever off ered and it is sure to be very energizing. Registration is available at SunshineCathedral.org.

Leadership Academy Scholarships AvailableWe are so serious about wanting people to attend our

exciting Leadership Academy/Best Practices Conference that we have offered Sunshine Cathedral members a discounted rate and now have secured 25 FULL scholarships! That’s right, 25 people will be able to attend the conference at no cost to themselves. Contact Rev. Dr. Robert Griffi n ([email protected]) to apply for your scholarship if you need fi nancial aid to attend the conference. The conference dates are almost upon us, so please register ASAP.

Thank You, Parker!Parker Dillon is Dr. Suzanne Shaw’s

and Joanie Nitzburg’s grandson (faithful Sunshine Cathedral congregants). Parker wanted to help Sunshine Cathedral with its food drive to feed families and individuals in need. So, he saved up his own money and bought several bags of groceries to donate to our feeding ministry! God bless young Parker for his generous spirit and kind heart, and God bless his loving family which has clearly modeled loving-kindness for him.

New Seating for Sunshine CathedralMake a pledge toward the

Chair Campaign (CCIV) so that Sunshine Cathedral can have new, beautiful seats and flooring. For every $553.00 given (given at once, or pledges fulfilled), the donor will have a name placed on one chair. Donors are making it possible for the church to have new seats, they are not purchasing their

own place to sit nor will donors decide which seats will bear their names (it simply wouldn’t be possible to accommodate those desires). What we are doing is making it possible to have beautiful, new, comfortable seats and those who give the amount of a chair will have a name placed on a chair, somewhere. Arrangements can be made to pay in full - $553.00 or $25.14 a week, or $110.60 monthly from January - May, 2017. Pledges must be paid in full by May 2017. Those with outstanding pledges for CCIII will have their pledges rolled over to this new campaign unless other instructions are given. If you have an outstanding pledge, just keep paying on it and you will be supporting the new eff ort!
