Order Of the
Knights of VM
Before the Internet was “invented”….. Before “googling” was the way to solve a
problem…. Before you could hold a computer on your
lap….. Before “source” was “open” …… When the only mice we knew had 4 feet and
squeaked And we only saw black/white, or “green”
screens…..
Came intrepid SYSPROGS, who led the way to a bold new concept – Virtualization!
Armed with nothing more than a keyboard and a passion, sustained by vending machine food and soda, these warriors did battle with many legendary adversaries: An ancient, dangerous dragon named “Internus Bucca
Maquinus” Multitudes of distributed server Orcs whose motto was
“many is better than one” Evil wizards claiming that “the mainframe is dead” Dark Lords wanting to extinguish the light of “Source
Code” Pointy-haired managers reading magazines
To keep alive the dream…..a highly efficient but beautifully simple form of virtualization - VM
In 1978, the “Order of the Knights of VM” was born.
Recognizes people who have contributed to the advancement of VM, or to the community that has supported VM.
Every 5 years, on the anniversary of the first VM product announcement, a new group of Knights are inducted to this august group.
In 2007, contributors to zLinux were included as they are kindred spirits.
When CP was first imagined, it was ground-breaking. Nothing like it had ever been done before. Virtualization was born.
The first Knights inducted into the order were the pioneers who made CP and then VM possible.
The “Gran Dame” of VM, Melinda Varian wrote the comprehensive history of how VM was born and developed: http://www.scribd.com/doc/46818910/8/K-The-

Starting in 1982, all new knights were assigned new names, befitting their contributions.
The SHARE LVM Program Manager is honorary “fons honorum” for the Order. Coordinates nomination and selection process
for new inductees, oversees designation of honorary names.
Nominations for new knights made by current members of the order, final selections based on their votes.
