¶ THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Isaiah 25, v 6-9 Read by Marjorie Ouvry

On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of fat things, a feast of wine on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wine on the lees

8

well refined. And he will destroy on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death for ever, and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth; for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day, “Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.”This is the word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING Acts 10: 34-43 Read by Nicolas Bevan

Peter opened his mouth and said: "Truly I perceive that God shows no partiality, but in every nation any one who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the word which he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace by Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), the word which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. And we are witnesses to all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and made him manifest; not to all the people but to us who were

9

chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. And he commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that he is the one ordained by God to be judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness that every one who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."

This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.PSALM Psalm 118. 1-2, 14-24

O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is gracious : Because his mercy endureth for ever.

Let Israel now confess that he is gracious : and that his mercy endureth for ever.

The LORD is my strength, and my song :and is become my salvation.

The voice of joy and health is in the dwellings of the righteous :

the right hand of the LORD bringeth mighty things to pass. The right hand of the LORD hath the pre-eminence :

the right hand of the LORD bringeth mighty things to pass.I shall not die, but live :

and declare the works of the LORD.The LORD hath chastened and corrected me :

but he hath not given me over unto death.Open me the gates of righteousness :

that I may go into them, and give thanks unto the LORD.This is the gate of the LORD :

the righteous shall enter into it.I will thank thee, for thou hast heard me :

and art become my salvation. The same stone which the builders refused :

10

Page 12: Order of Service · Web viewYou know the word which he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace by Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), the word which was proclaimed throughout all

is become the head-stone in the corner. This is the LORD’s doing :

and it is marvellous in our eyes. This is the day which the LORD hath made :

we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Stand for the reading of the GospelGOSPEL John 20, v 1-18

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. All Glory be to thee, O Lord.

Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first; and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying, and the napkin, which had been on his head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes.

But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb; and she

11

Page 13: Order of Service · Web viewYou know the word which he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace by Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), the word which was proclaimed throughout all

saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” Saying this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom do you seek?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Do not hold me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brethren and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” Mary Magdalene went and said to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her.

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise be to thee, O Christ.

It is very meet, right and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God,through Jesus Christ thine only Son our Lord. But chiefly are we bound to praise theebecause thou didst raise him gloriously from the

dead. For he is the true paschal lamb who was offered for

us,and has taken away the sin of the world.By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has restored to us

everlasting life.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven,we laud and magnify thy glorious name, evermore praising thee and saying:

Choir Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth.Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua.Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory.Glory be to thee, O Lord most high.

Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini.Hosanna in excelsis.

Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of thy Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be unto us his body and his blood;who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee,he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;do this in remembrance of me.Likewise after supper he took the cup;and when he had given thanks to thee, he gave it to them, saying: Drink ye all of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it,in remembrance of me.Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father,we remember his offering of himselfmade once for all upon the cross;we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; we look for the coming of his kingdom, and with this bread and this cupwe make the memorial of Christ thy Son our Lord.

Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died:

Christ is risen:Christ will come again.

Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts
