The Introductory Rites gather the community and allow the people to unite in mind, heart and spirit.

Entrance Chant

We stand and join together as Christ’s people, opening the celebration by raising our voices in praise of God who is present among us.

The entrance chant or song accompanies the procession of the priest, deacon or other ministers to the altar.

Penitential Act

Before we hear God’s word, we acknowledge our sins humbly, ask for mercy and accept God’s pardon.

As a community we express sorrow for our sins in ONE of THREE forms provided in the Penitential Act.

Penitential Act 1Celebrant: Brethren (brothers and sisters), let us acknowledge our sins,

and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

People: I confess to almighty Godand to you, my brothers and sisters,that I have greatly sinned,in my thoughts and in my words,in what I have done and in what I have failed to

do,

And, striking their breast, they say:

through my fault, through my fault,through my most grievous fault;therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,all the Angels and Saints,and you, my brothers and sisters,to pray for me to the Lord our God.

GloriaThis is an ancient hymn and a joyful act of praise to God.

Whenever possible, the Gloria should be sung rather than recited.

The Gloria is used at Sunday Masses outside the seasons of Advent and Lent, on Solemnities and Feasts, and at special celebrations.

CollectThe Collect or Opening Prayer concludes the Introductory Rites.It begins with ‘Let us pray’ where we pray our own intentions.The priest then gathers or collects the intentions of the people and offers these intentions to God.The people now take their seats to listen to the Word of God.

We stand and respond to the Word of God by affirming our belief in the truths that unite us as one Body in Christ.

The Profession of Faith is sung or said by the priest with the people on Sundays and Solemnities.

We have gathered and have been challenged and formed by God’s word.

We now focus our attention on the altar.

We express our participation by making an offering, bringing forward the bread and wine and other gifts to relieve the needs of the Church and the poor.
