Stud rail has long been used in the equestrianworld as an alternative to timber post and railfencing. Once erected and strained up this typeof fence requires minimal upkeep and looksgood for years.

Intermediate posts can be spaced at 6-8 metre intervals. The Studrailshould be erected along the centre line of the straining posts withintermediate offset. (Fig. C)

Roll out the Studrail on the fixing side,cut back at one end sufficient plastic toexpose the wire. Pass through pre-drilled holes on the straining post andslide on vices securing one end. (Fig. D)

Know Your Timber...Most customers spend time deciding what specification of wire to buy and what labour to use when planningtheir fence requirements. Whilst this tends to form the main expenditure of their project, the timber stakesare an afterthought with their cost usually the main issue prior to purchasing. Stakes are as important if notmore important to the longevity of the fence and time should be taken to fully consider the options availablebefore commencing. This very competitive market has numerous variants and knowing exactly what they areis complex. We have listed some of the options available to you with a brief description on their make up andtheir expected longevity, which we believe will help you avoid the disappointment of having to prematurelyreplace your fence. Ideally any timber in ground contact needs to have the very best form of treatment,whereas rails (out of ground contact) do not need treatment to the same degree. For strength, cleft, althoughrustic looking, is the strongest form of fencing as it is taken from the natural grain of the timber, however,market demands and price dictate that peeled, machine full round, half round and sawn timbers are thepreferred options in both stakes and rails.

Treatment may vary, dependant on winter cut or summer cut timber, and these tend to be air dried to a moisture content of 28% or below, then treated toEuropean legislation Class 4. However it is important to note that the moisture content reading is formed from an average selection of the products to betreated. Only Kiln-dried products can guarantee moisture content of 28% or below. A merchantable quality is a mixed species of white or redwood selectedand treated to the above principles. Whilst every care is taken to comply with the class 4 regulations, without the costly exercise of Kiln Drying it is notpossible to offer a guarantee on longevity of this product. The new EEC regulations have taken out arsenic from the treatment and chrome is currentlyunder investigation. However, new chemicals have been introduced that are safer, and under the correct application are still able to satisfy the Class 4regulation. Due to market demands and competitive pressures this type of timber tends to be price sensitive and although will suit most situations, anydoubt to its longevity or application then Class 4 Kiln dried should be purchased.Appearance: A straight timber with a peeled semi-rough surface or sawn finish, light green in colour. Merchantable Quality

Timber kiln dried to a moisture content of less than 28%. Selected redwood are used and pressure treated in accordance with the European regulations.Kiln drying the timber prior to treatment is essential; it enables the treatment plant to monitor all aspects of the treatment process including the essentialmoisture content prior to the fixation process. This form of treatment carries a guarantee similar to that of the Highways specification and should give aservice life in excess of 15 to 20 years. This is a more recognized form of quality, selected kiln dried timber, then a controlled treatment process providingthe ideal in-ground post products to give you a durable, long lasting fence. Micronized Treated Timber

English coppiced woodlands provide an annual source of fencing timbers. Chestnut coppiced in the winter willgive the longest life, ideally sitting for a year then tar dipped; however, todays are cut green then used. The lifeexpectancy of green chestnut exceeds 10 years. Appearance: A semi-rough surface in cleft or sawn rustic appearance, irregular and sometimes deformed lookingwith a light golden colour appearance when new fading to a silvery grey. McVeigh Parker RIDING ARENA

An all weather horse arena or gallop must be designed and constructed to cope with adverse weather conditions andpreserve the properties of the riding surface. Therefore the inclusion of a MP Geotextile membrane is vital to maintain aclean free draining surface and improve stability.Installing a riding area or gallop is not beyond the ability of a competent contractor or landowner.The following guidelines and sketches have been prepared to help with your design.

Location• To simplify drainage, ideally the arena should be located near a stream, ditch or existing drain.• On sloping ground some excavation will be required to make the area level.• Easy access from hard standing road or track.

Construction• Examine the site and roughly mark out the area (typically 40m x 20m).• Remove all topsoil and vegetation from the riding area and then level the site.• Unless the soil is free draining “herringbone” drainage will be required to drain the subsoil and carry away surface

water.• Dig a spine drain trench across the centre of the arena. This should be 30cm wide and have a varying depth

(minimum 40cm) to give a gentle fall toward the outlet.• Branch drainage channels should be dug at approximately 5m centres.• Back fill the trenches with 40mm shingle over the pipe.• Line all trenches and cover the prepared soil-base with MP Geotextile

membrane to filter out water borne soil particles and reduce silting up. Lapany joist in the fabric a minimum of 30cm.

• A drainpipe is not necessary unless large volumes of water are expected inthe spine drain or the cut off drain.

• Erect the perimeter fence and nail retaining boards to the base of the postsproviding a perimeter wall depth of either 30cm or 45cm.

• Use crushed stone, clean rubble or similar material of roughly 5cm to 7cm size tofill the trenches and form a drainage layer over the whole riding arenacompacted to a depth of 10 - 15cm.

• Cover the entire arena with MP Geotextile membrane to separate the topdressing from the rubble, again lapping any joints to a minimum of 30cm.

• Fill with your choice of riding mix (normally sand, woodchip or PVC granules)to a depth of at least 20cm.

Riding Arena DIYAll you need to erect your own arena, just add your choice of topping and hardcore(supplied by others). All timber is softwood CCA Pressure treated for long life.

21WOODEN PALISADE


Palisade is a popular form of domestic fencing with various different designs to choose from.Traditionally rails are inserted into mortices in between the posts then pales are nailed to the rails. We also offer an economy palisade fencing for both speed and cost of erection. Allcomponents are supplied loose for on site erection. All softwood timber has been pressuretreated for long life and can be left to weather naturally or can be stained or painted for analternative appearance.Economy Nail-on Palisade – This form of palisade is a most cost effective solution comparedto standard morticed and because the posts are at 1.8m centres the strength is retained in thefence. Consisting of standard square top, blank posts, erected at 1.8m centres, 0.6m longer thanthe fence height. Then nailing rails to the posts, making sure you have alternate joins on eachpost. Then nailing pales to rails, traditionally at a pales width apart. (or closer if you prefer).

Morticed Palisade – This is the more traditional palisade fencing, the posts are morticed sothey can be placed in line with the pales. The tops of the posts are normally weathered to suitthe type of pale top. Posts can be set at 1.8m, 2.4m, 2.7m or 3.0m bays, dependant on yourrequired appearance and budget. The triangular arris rails with tenoned ends are cut to suit the bay size, then inserted into the post mortices. The pales are then nailed to the arris railstraditionally at a pales width apart (or closer if you prefer). When ordering this type of fence it is essential to specify which hand of post and whether the corners are external or internal(see drg1) also add one extra post for the end of the run.

Universal & Hunting gate – The double cross-bracinggives the Universal it’s distinctive style, commonly seenaround the countryside. The tapered top rail is designedto reduce the pressure on the hanging stile. Available inboth right and left hand hanging. They can be hung as asingle leaf or alternatively, a combination for widerentrances.

Yeoman Entrance gate – Manufactured bywheelwrights in years gone by, it still remains thepremier entrance gate to enhance any property. Theycan be hung on their own, single leaf, left or righthanded, or as a pair in any combination, e.g. 3.0m for caraccess with a 1.2m pedestrian access. Available inprepared softwood and Iroko hardwood.

Most of the designs are available in a choice of timbers, which aresourced from sustainable woodlands, where possible.Softwood – Available in either a semi prepared or prepared finish.

Prepared finish will readily take paint if preferred.Keruing – A planed Malaysian reddish brown, knot free hardwood.

A cheaper alternative to Iroko, when available. Notreatment required. Not suitable for painting.

Iroko – The premier hardwood, with the appearance and qualitiesof teak. Planed and sanded mid brown finish. Much lighterin weight than that of Oak and Keruing, reducing thepressure being put on the fittings and head stock.No treatment required, although a coating of teak oilannually will help maintain its natural colour.

Oak – Green English Oak available in sawn finish, susceptible toslight twist and shakes whilst ageing. No treatmentrequired.

Kent 5 rail and Sussex6 rail (ideal for dogcontainment) designsare available in anysize made to order.

The economical way to extend grassed areas to suit a number of applications,whilst still protecting the natural appearance of the grass. Once laid the root masswill quickly interlock with the mesh filaments, providing a stable surface capable ofwithstanding lightweight vehicle and heavy pedestrian use, preventing rutting anddamage. Easy to install, simply unroll and peg down. Once laid, within a matter of

weeks the grass would have grownthrough and mowing can continue asbefore, without affecting theperformance of the grid.

MP Grass Protection Mesh can simply be used for immediate protection. This very tough polymergrid will protect and reinforce grassed areas and help to prevent rutting where vehicles of up to8 tonnes per axle are expected. It can be laid down for the period of the event, or for exampleto be left down to produce a more heavy duty solution to overspill car parks. For permanent usewe recommend it is laid in spring allowing the grass root mass to establish. Approximately twocuts are recommended before use.

Drainage & Water PipesPlastic land drainage is a modern replacement for clay pipes and has been universally and effectively usedfor over 30 years. Land drainage is principally used to alleviate water logged fields, lawns and gardens. Theplastic drain is laid in a permeable stone enclosure allowing the water to filter through to the plastic pipewhich then directs the water to the designated outlet. Various sizes available dependant on the severity ofthe problem. Membrane can be added to the pipe particularly fine soil types to prevent pipe blockage.
