Dear Students, Parents/Guardians, Welcome to the 2019-20 school year! Our orchestra program continues to grow and promote musical excellence in the Parkview community and beyond. Continuing research shows that the study of music can improve personal discipline, motivation, and cognitive function in other academic areas. It is super fun, a nice break in your day, and looks great on college applications as a long-term extracurricular activity.

The next page features all of the dates for the year. Items in bold are mandatory and will be

entered as grades into the GCPS gradebook. (GCPS allows band/chorus/ orchestra to count after school activities as graded activities) We have a few after-school rehearsals as performances near. We are notifying you far in advance.

“Required out-of-class activities, as stipulated by the teacher, will determine a portion of the student's grade.” GCPS Policy Procedure I-Instructional Programs Descriptor Term: Performing Arts Descriptor Code: P.IDEA Effective: November 1, 2013

As usual, at the beginning of a school year, there are several issues/procedures we need to address. I am asking for both parents and students to read the entire handbook, and fill out/sign the last few pages. By signing, you are agreeing to ALL items discussed in the handbook.

Let’s have a great year of music making! Scott W. PHILOSOPHY

You, the members of the Parkview High School Orchestra, have elected to be in this ensemble. By choosing to participate in orchestra, you make the commitment to demonstrate behavior, attitude, and skills that contribute to the continued excellence of the group, as well as your own personal musical growth. Students entering the high school orchestra program should already use correct playing posture, appropriate and courteous rehearsal & concert behavior, and consistent practice habits. Students are expected to continue these established practices and put forth their best effort each day, because they have made a commitment to the development of the group and themselves.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

There are four main ensembles for orchestra in GCPS. The levels are as follows: Intermediate Orchestra (Concert), Intermediate Instrument Ensemble (Symphonic), Advanced Orchestra (Philharmonic), and Mastery Orchestra (Chamber). Intermediate Orchestra is so large that it must be split into two different periods. They will often combine to perform for concerts and festivals. * Intermediate Orchestra (Concert) - Up to 4 Semesters - Gr. 9–12 In Intermediate Orchestra, students acquire basic-level solo and ensemble performance skills. Students refine music-reading skills as well as performance skills, including more advanced bow techniques. Students acquire knowledge in music theory and history as they relate to orchestral literature. The music performed is equivalent to GMEA level III. * Intermediate Instrument Ensemble (Symphonic) - Up to 8 Semesters - Gr. 9–12 Students engage in preparation and performance of music literature equivalent to GMEA difficulty level III/IV. Students refine bowing techniques, performance techniques, intonation, and knowledge of music theory and history. * Advanced Orchestra (Philharmonic) - Up to 8 Semesters - Gr. 9–12 This course is for advanced string instrument students performing GMEA level IV/V music. Emphasis is placed on the standard orchestral repertoire, advanced techniques, independence and confidence in performance situations, and thorough understanding of the theoretical and historical basis for the music performed. * Mastery Orchestra (Chamber) - Up to 8 Semesters - Gr. 9–12 This smaller “audition only” course is for the most advanced string instrument students performing GMEA level V/VI music. Emphasis is placed on the standard orchestral repertoire, advanced techniques, independence and confidence in performance situations, and thorough understanding of the theoretical and historical basis for the music performed. Members of this class are subject to additional graded performances throughout the year.

All four orchestras may or may not participate in the same activities throughout the year.

The Orchestra Director reserves the right to place students accordingly. Students may also have to be placed in one orchestra or another due to schedule conflicts, or need of instrumentation. (i.e., bass)

Through rehearsals, performances and competitions, students can expect to:

1. Increase development of individual playing skills, 2. Learn the discipline and concentration involved in the study and performance of music, 3. Become a contributing member of a large, cooperative group and share in that group's

achievements, 4. Become better learners and students in all subjects, and 5. Develop a lifelong appreciation of music.

DISCIPLINE PROCEDURE When inappropriate behavior is observed, the following will apply:

1. Warning (daily points deducted) 2. Isolation / Conference (written consequences assigned) 3. Parent Notification and Detention (physical, written, or cleaning work assigned) 4. Administrative Referral / Consequences Assigned

(Severe inappropriate behavior will result in an immediate referral)

(Per school policy, students may be denied field trip attendance if their discipline record warrants it; this includes the non-refundable Spring Trip)

GRADING POLICY

Grading Scale: Summary of grade percentage values: A = 90-100 % Daily Participation 20% / Written assignments(quizzes) 15% B = 80-89 % Playing Tests/Concerts/OME (summative assessment) 45% C = 74-79 % Final 20% (written and performance based) D = 70-73 % F = 0-69 % DAILY PARTICIPATION 20% A portion of your grade given is through daily participation, which can be broken into several subcategories such as interest in subject matter, properly raising your hand and waiting to be recognized to speak, the proper progression of your learning level, evidence through your playing that you have been practicing, showing up prepared to work with the proper materials (pencils, folder, music), and being in your seat on time, ready to tune. When inappropriate behavior occurs, daily participation points will be deducted (with or without a student’s knowledge). You will earn twenty points per day, totaling 100 for the week. (a weekly assignment of 100%) Shorter weeks will have free points added to make up the difference. Talking to a neighbor will result in, first, a warning. Being out of your seat during a rehearsal, having unexcused tardies, not having a pencil for “pencil check”, and forgetting your instrument will also result in the loss of daily points. Any extra credit earned is in the form of additional daily participation points. Extra credit may be earned by attending any string-related concert anywhere, similar to your required “Outside Musical Experience” (OME) each semester. Simply bring in the program from the concert signed by a parent/guardian.

Page 7: Orchestra · 2019-08-28 · The next page features all of the dates for the year. Items in bold are mandatory and will be entered as grades into the GCPS gradebook. (GCPS allows band/chorus

7

Since there is no way to make up for rehearsal time, you will not receive daily points when you are absent. A few absences a semester will not affect your grade significantly. You can still earn replacement points for absences, which can be “made up” by completing article reviews. Simply find a string-related article (internet, newspaper, magazine) and type/write a ½-page summary. Include any opinions you may have on the subject. Please include the article when turning in assignments. You will receive one set of 20 daily points per article. WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS / QUIZZES 15% Written assignments on theory, rhythm, and composers may be given. Several of these are county-level assignments which include pitch discrimination skills, harmonic analysis, and general ear training development. All quizzes will consist only of material we have covered in class. PLAYING TESTS/CONCERTS/OME 45%

The playing test will be on the material that we have been working on all week, so there will be no surprises. As long as you are paying attention in class and practicing at home with the CHARMS practice tracks/JWPepper.com, you should have no problem. By playing in front of each other, we will become a stronger, more supportive group. Since this may be new to many of you, our first few tests will be fairly simple. For example, if we have been focusing on the opening of a piece, the test for that week may be on measures 1-10. You will often find out the “exact” measures the morning of the test or the day before.

Playing test grades can be made up/taken again unlimited times without penalty. If you don’t like your score, practice and take it again before/after school.

Most concerts we give will be held in the Parkview HS main theater. If we have a change of location/dates you will be notified far in advance. The concert/fundraising /LGPE/spring trip dates can all be found on the orchestra calendar located on our website:

All calendars can be found in CHARMS/eClass.

Attendance at school concerts is mandatory!*

An after-school rehearsal or two per semester may be necessary as concert time approaches. Since our program has significantly grown, we cannot safely fit all parents into the theater and usually have to stagger the start times of each group on concert day. For example, Concert and Symphonic may start at 6:30pm, and Philharmonic and Chamber 7:30pm (please arrive 30 minutes before your performance time) (*There is no way to make-up a missed performance, especially one we have been working three months to prepare for. If a student is not able to attend a concert due to illness or family emergency, a county-recommended written make-up research report (10+ pages) will be assigned and graded by the Language Arts staff.) The student may also choose to perform all music in its entirety for Mr. Hague.

CONCERT DRESS CODE A professional and consistent look is required for participation in PHS Orchestra. We will

wear this same uniform for every performance: at all in-school concerts, at LGPE performances, and when performing on trips and competitions. We are judged and graded on professionalism, which includes uniform dress.

If you are not dressed properly you will NOT be allowed to play on stage, and you will receive a ZERO for your performance grade.

Boys AND Girls:

Black dress shirt • Long-sleeved, button front with collar. • All black. No stripes, images or logos. • No exposed shoulders or see through shirts (PHS dress code applies)

Black dress pants • Full length. No crops or capris. • No holes, cut-outs, rips or tears. • No tights, legging or jeans. No skirts or dresses.

Black socks • No white socks! All black.

Black dress shoes • Low-heeled. No sandals, flip-flops, or high-heeled shoes. • All black. No white soles. No logos. No light-up shoes.

BLUE skinny tie (Purchase in class by 9/27) • $5 to POBC in envelope labeled with first and last name and “TIE” • Practice tying your tie at home! (Ask someone to teach you or use videos.) • (Tie is optional for girls)

No strong fragrances at concerts or in class please (asthma concerns)

If you are not dressed properly you will NOT be allowed to play on stage, and you will receive a ZERO for your performance grade.

CONCERT ETIQUETTE When you are on stage, you are expected to act like professionals. Inappropriate behavior on stage will result in severe loss of participation points. When you are resting (not playing) during the music or between pieces, remain still, sit up straight, and face forward. Take the chance to really enjoy the music you are performing. This is the moment we shine! Don’t play nervous and quiet, you know the music. PLAY STRONG! Orchestras Waiting in the Audience: While waiting your turn to perform on stage, you must remain quiet. Students talking/laughing will lose concert participation points. Eating food/candy in the audience will earn you a ZERO for the concert. Another big issue – GUM CHEWING. If you are seen chewing gum by chaperones during the concert, you will lose ½ credit for the performance. Our concerts are generally short. (1 hour or less). No “parent meeting” concerts. Each group is on stage for about 15 minutes. Please be respectful to each group and stay off your cell phone while they are performing.

All students must sign out with Mr. Hague at the end of the concert to receive full credit. This assures an audience for the other orchestras and maintains the dignity of the performing process. Please do not ask to leave as soon as you are done performing. I promise to do my best to move the evening quickly. Concerts usually flow Concert, Symphonic (BREAK) Philharmonic, Chamber.

OUTSIDE MUSICAL EXPERIENCE (OME) What is an OME?

The Parkview High School Performing Arts program requires that all Band, Chorus, and Orchestra students attend outside performances outside of our area of study. Students will be required to attend one (1) performance per semester and can include but not limited to: PHS Band, Chorus, or Theatre, other high school or middle school music performances, professional orchestral or jazz concerts, large musical church performances, etc. If you have any questions about whether something meets criteria, ask Mr. Hague. Any performance after the required one per semester can be used for extra credit points and lettering.

A parent must sign a program from the performance to get credit for this portion of the student’s grade. If you do not have a program signed by a parent, then you must write a one-page summation of the event using appropriate musical terms used in class. This paper must demonstrate beyond any doubt that you were in attendance at the event.

FINAL EXAM 20% A final exam for orchestra will be given at the end of every semester during finals week. It will be written and performance based. The five orchestras will all have different exams. For the performance section, we will perform the most recent concert music in quintets with one on a part. A grading rubric for the performance part of the final will be used according to GCPS policy. The final exam each semester is broken down into 10% performance, 10% written.

LETTERING

The lettering sheet can be found in the “Lettering” section of the orchestra eClass website and on CHARMS. It is the responsibility of the student to maintain a record of their activities and fill out the sheet accordingly. Please see Mr. Hague if you have any questions. INSTRUMENT CARE New county rules require that each student using a school instrument MUST fill out a damage clause “you break it, you buy it” contract filled out with instrument serial numbers. The replacement cost of the instrument will be listed on each individual contract. Students will receive a copy of this contract for their own records. If the instrument needs only minor repairs, the student will be issued an invoice from a professional string repair shop that they must pay for. Any unpaid money owed for repair or replacement of instruments may be used to place a “graduation-hold” on a student’s account. A graduation hold is county-wide and the student will not receive a diploma until debt is paid. If you are using a school-owned instrument, it must be returned to its proper place when you are finished using it. Instruments (basses and cellos) and bows will be numbered, along with storage racks. Please be as careful as possible when you are first retrieving your school instrument. Our storage rooms are small and the instruments are only made of wood. They scratch and damage very easily. Please try to arrive a few minutes early to class to obtain your school instrument. Be sure to loosen your bow when you hang it up on the rack. Failure to loosen your bow will result in a zero for the day. Important: The only time a cello or bass endpin should be extended is when the instrument is being played. Some are rubber-tipped, but others are very sharp. Retract the endpin carefully when you lay the cello/bass on its side. NEVER carry a cello or bass in the air with the endpin extended! Severe eye/head trauma & injury can result.

Personal Instruments/Equipment

Gwinnett County Public Schools is not responsible for stolen or damaged instruments that are owned by students.

The director will make every effort to secure the storage room and to have it open in the afternoon for the students to take their instruments home. To minimize damage, students should NEVER touch or play other students’ instruments, or allow their instruments to be handled or played by others. Care should be taken not to leave an instrument unattended. An instrument may also be added to a home owner’s or renter’s policy at a very minimal cost. Most rental stores offer a small insurance fee. Please don’t send your “friends” to pick up your instrument. If you are not in our orchestra family, you should not be in J Building.

Please make sure your instrument has a tag or is clearly labeled with your information.

Parkview Orchestra Booster Club (POBC)

[email protected]

Who We Are

Parkview Orchestra Booster Club, Inc. (POBC) is a nonprofit 501(c )3 organization created to enhance the orchestra program at Parkview High School through financial support and volunteer service. As a charity booster club run by parents, we operate separately from the Gwinnett County Public School system, with no financial or legal ties to GCPS. We rely on parent volunteers to populate our Board of Directors. We also need the support of every family to meet the basic needs of the Parkview High School Orchestra, and to help Mr. Hague bring our program to a new level of excellence.

Financial Support Booster Club Dues (payable to POBC) • Basic Membership $80 per student • Membership with Friends Donation: $130 ($80 + $50)

9/19/19 1st installment of $40 due Pay $80 or more by 9/19 to attend student Krispy Kreme Party on 9/27

10/18/19 2nd installment of $40 due Pay $80 or more by 10/18 to attend Scary Movie Night on 10/29

Please contact [email protected] if you need to make other payment arrangements. Your concerns will be kept confidential.

We need every family to pay dues for each student. We have reduced membership dues to the point that they do not meet all our expenses, only basic student needs. Basic dues help cover expenses such as sheet music (up to $2,500 per year), leather performance folders ($25 each), electronic A/V equipment (nearly $2,000 last year), instrument parts and repair ($5,000), and all the expenses associated with preparing for and participating in Large Group Performance Evaluations (LGPE; typically $3,000). All members receive a Parkview Orchestra car magnet and a student t-shirt. Thank you for making timely dues payments!

NOTE: Basic booster club dues are not tax-deductible because they are paid for the direct benefit of individual students.

The booster club is challenging all families to become Friends of Parkview Orchestra this year by including an additional donation of $50 per family (total $130) to help meet expenses not covered by basic dues. Returning families may notice that the Basic Dues 0f $80 plus a $50 Friends Donation ($130) is approximately the same as the regular dues amount paid in 2018-2019. We appreciate your generosity!

12

Other Income Orchestras (and Fine Arts programs in general) receive a very small portion of the GCPS budget. The school requests a course fee of about $10 on MyPaymentsPlus at registration. This amount will provide less than $2,000 for the Parkview Orchestra this year. We spent over $82,000 in 2018-2019, and orchestra enrollment has increased 25% this year. The Parkview Orchestra Booster Club relies on Friends of Parkview Orchestra donations, business sponsorship, and fundraising to meet expenses not covered by GCPS funds or basic dues. Some of these expenses include parent communication methods (website, Charms email & volunteer calendar), food and beverages for students at after school rehearsals and activities, and student incentives, awards, and ceremonies. This additional income is also used to pay for booster club business operating expenses (officer bonding, banking, corporation renewal, accounting fees), and to help the orchestra meet its long-term program goals. (We are currently saving for a major capital improvement: instrument lockers!)

Friends of Parkview Orchestra (payable to POBC) • Donations of $50 or more from the general community • Additional donations of $50 or more per orchestra family

(May be paid with dues or at any time throughout the school year)

We are asking each family to make a $50 Friends donation in addition to basic membership dues this year. The POBC appreciates donations in any amount, and you can send a payment of $50 or more at any time throughout the school year to become a Friend of the Parkview Orchestra. We will list our Friends in our concert programs, subject to printing deadlines. Please let us know how you would like your name to appear (John & Jane Doe, The Smith Family, etc.) or if you wish to remain anonymous. Thank you for your generosity!

NOTE: Amounts donated in excess of Basic Dues are made as general donations to the orchestra. Friends donations cannot be applied to individual student expenses such as trips. Please consult a tax professional regarding the deductibility of these donations.

Fundraising We will need to compensate for our decrease in dues with fundraisers. We are attempting to make this as painless as possible by scheduling monthly restaurant Spirit Nights (generally the 3rd Wednesday of each month), alternating between Smokin’ Gold BBQ and Chick-Fil-A (see calendar). We will also offer online sales of items such as Spirit Wear (credit cards accepted). Please share our Spirit Night calendar with family, friends, and neighbors, and tell them to be sure to mention “Parkview Orchestra” at the restaurant. Give others our web address, https://www.parkvieworchestra.com, and our online sales ID codes so they can make product purchases. We need each family to participate by promoting our fundraisers to members of the community, even if you are unable to make any purchases for yourself. Thank you for your participation!

NOTE: As a 501 (c )3 charity, we cannot allow fundraising profits to be applied toward individual student expenses such as trips. Funds must be used to benefit the orchestra program as a whole. We are attempting to primarily use fundraisers that take a group effort and result in one payment to the orchestra, such as the restaurant Spirit Nights.

Page 13: Orchestra · 2019-08-28 · The next page features all of the dates for the year. Items in bold are mandatory and will be entered as grades into the GCPS gradebook. (GCPS allows band/chorus

13

Business Sponsorship We can recognize your business in our concert programs and post your logo on our website. Please email [email protected] for details, including printing deadlines. Thank you for your generosity!

NOTE: As a 501 (c )3 charity, we cannot allow funds donated by businesses to be applied toward individual student expenses. Corporations cannot specify or sponsor individual students on trips.

How to pay (cash, check, or money order to POBC) • Checks and money orders (payable to POBC) are preferable to cash. Payments must be placed in

an envelope with student’s first and last name and purpose of payment (dues, field trip, fundraiser, Friends, etc.). Extra envelopes are available in Mr. Hague’s office if needed.

• Students are to place payment envelopes into the locked POBC drop box inside Mr. Hague’s office. Do not place them on Mr. Hague’s desk, table, podium, chair, etc.

• Students are responsible for ensuring their payments are properly labeled and placed in the POBC lockbox, not Mr. Hague!

• Mr. Hague does not have access to the contents of the POBC lockbox. Parents should contact [email protected] with any payment concerns. Do not email Mr. Hague.

• NEW: Sorry, the POBC cannot accept Charms, PayPal, or credit card payments this year. • NEW: Parents will make all Spring Trip payments directly to a travel agency (credit cards

accepted).

Volunteer Service The booster club and Mr. Hague need the volunteer support of every family at events or behind the scenes to help our program succeed. Your donations of food and professional services* allow us to apply more funds to direct orchestra needs. Your assistance with simple tasks (one time or repeatedly) will allow Mr. Hague to devote more time to developing a world-class orchestra. We have attached Parent Surveys (now updated with event dates) to allow each guardian to note their skills, interests, and events where they may be able to help. Feel free to make additional copies for spouses, etc. We have difficulty finding volunteer coverage for events that take place during the school day. Please consider making arrangements in your schedule to help us fill these needs. Check the Charms calendar as each date approaches to see specific needs. Please also consider volunteering on the POBC Board of Directors. We will hold elections 2nd semester for Co-Presidents, VP, Secretary, Treasurer, and a Communications Officer. It’s a pleasure for us to meet with Mr. Hague one evening a month for about an hour to chart our progress toward reaching his goals for our orchestra program! Thank you for your assistance! *Parents with accounting skills could help the POBC save $2,000 or more. Please contact us! We also have an ongoing need for parents who can translate Spanish or Vietnamese.

Please Support Our Students!

Mr. Hague has included performance and event dates for the entire school year in this handbook. Please make arrangements in your schedule to attend as many concerts as you can, including our LGPE competition (LGPE times will be available at a later date).

• Students in the Concert Orchestra and Symphonic Orchestra typically perform at 6:30pm. • Students in the Philharmonic Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra typically play at 7:30pm.

Performers need an audience, and Mr. Hague, the volunteers, and your teens need to know you value their efforts. We look forward to seeing you several times this year! Please seek out volunteers at orchestra events or contact the Parkview Orchestra Booster Club at [email protected] if you have any questions or comments regarding payments, volunteer opportunities, or positions on the POBC Board of Directors. We will also be able to provide information about this year’s Spring Trip Competition (New Orleans) as soon as it is available. Mr. Hague receives an incredible amount of emails every day. Board volunteers will be able to address your questions sooner than he can, and he will be able to devote more time to educating our students if you contact the board first! Sincerely, Colleen Schmidt President, POBC [email protected]
