This year, Duke Energy awarded more than $110,000 in two categories: STEM as well as in Math, Science and Energy Education. Duke Energy’s level of support, positively impacting the education of nearly 7,300 students, makes the company our most generous source of Impact Grant funding.

St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Synopsys & WKMG 6 News

Community Outreach and OCPS Minority Achievement Office

The Orange County Math Bee is a must-see competition where fourth graders win cash prizes. St. Luke’s United Methodist Church began the Math Bee competition at Mollie Ray and Pineloch elementary schools. Like a spelling bee, this tests students’ math skills in rounds on a stage, and allows them to advance from a classroom to a school-wide competition. Having seen the powerful effect that a Math Bee can have on a school, the St. Luke’s IMPACT team reached out to the district in 2015 to expand the scope. The Orange County Invitational Math Bee was initially extended to seven schools and now includes 25 schools. This program impacts 110 classrooms with nearly 2,400 students participating in their school competition.

Throughout the school year, schools invite their faith-based Partners in Education or other community organizations to support their programs. St. Luke’s United Methodist Church provides training for competing schools while Synopsys, a continuous corporate Math Bee sponsor since the beginning, has also offered financial and employee support. WKMG News 6 allows news anchor Ginger Gadsden to emcee the event while the news team records and live streams the Math Bee for the entire district to see. In addition, the OCPS Minority Achievement Office, OCPS Partners in Education program, Federal Programs/Title I Services and Transportation Services all serve as resources for the Math Bee.

The Orange County Invitational Math Bee has a major impact on increasing students’ confidence, interest in and success with mathematics in the classroom, school and life.

SCHOOL AWARD

Page 11: Orange County Public Schools

The Florida Department of Education Family and Community Involvement Award

“Be a Chief. Show Your True Colors” Dommerich Elementary School

Elementary Level Award

Dommerich Elementary School cohesively works with its SAC, PTA and Partners in Education to support its students and families. This collaborative effort is the foundation that allows Dommerich to be a true community school. This year’s “Be a Chief. Show Your True Colors,” three-week campaign was an innovative practice which, without a doubt, increased family and community involvement at the school, as well as provided improved academic success as evidenced by the support given to promote the goals of the School Improvement Plan. From the first “Be a Chief. Show Your True Colors,” campaign which started six years ago, the school has had two significant growths directly related to this practice - a notable increase in family participation and financial support for teachers to implement new classroom practices. Parents overwhelming identified the CHIEF characteristics as Caring, Healthy, Imaginative, Effort and Fellowship.

“Be a Chief. Show Your True Colors” allows for students and families to use their own ideas and talents to raise money to support the school’s educational programs. Advertising to promote the campaign is done through brochures that go home; the school’s Facebook page; PTA website; both the PTA and school’s digital newsletters; the students’ favorite outlets; and daily updates on the morning announcements. Fundraising ideas range from pumpkins and rock painting parties, and class dog washes to homemade lemonade stands and bakes sales. Students also have baked and sold muffins, soup, bracelets, hair bows, artwork and bath bombs. In three weeks, monies raised by the community during the campaign amassed $21,000 to fund teacher trainings and support individual and grade-wide teacher grants through the Special Teacher Project Fund.

Gotha Parent AcademyGotha Middle School

Secondary Level Award

Canvas is an online learning management system that is used across Orange County Public Schools, for K-12 teachers and students. Considered an easy-to-use, cloud-based learning management system, it connects all the digital tools and resources teachers use into one simple place and empowers teachers to communicate with parents digitally.

Gotha’s PTO realized many families wanted to use the system but didn’t know how. They decided to have a special event just for the families to learn about the benefits of Canvas as it relates to their child’s education; thus the Gotha Parent Academy was created. This event involved staff from Gotha and the district office, partners, families and the PTO. To accommodate as many schedules as possible, Gotha staff and PTO offered sessions for the families to attend. The relaxed atmosphere allowed for families to meet and mingle before diving into the Canvas lesson with the district consultant and Gotha Principal Monica Emery. Families learned how to monitor progress and maintain open communication with school staff. Parents left the meeting with a better understanding of this new education tool and how to support their students and the school by utilizing Canvas.

Most importantly, the Gotha Parent Academy is a new network that provides endless avenues for Gotha parents, students, partners and staff to learn and communicate.
