Oral Complications of Diabetes
Oral dysesthesia
xerostomia
Salivary gland enlargement
Salivary hypofunction
Dry mucosal surface
Dental caries
Gingivitis and periodontitis
Oral dysesthesia
Which include;-
1) Burning mouth.
2) Altered wound healing.
3) Increase incidence of infection.
4) Candidal infection.
xerostomia
Decrease secretion of salivary gland.
Salivary gland enlargement
Salivary gland enlargement
or sialadenitis is inflammation
of salivary gland especially in
parotid gland and both are
related to poor glycemic
control.
Salivary hypofunction
Medication taken by DM patient for
related or unrelated systemic condition
may produce salivary hypofunction.
Dry Mucosal Surface
Caused by insufficient salivary output are
easily irritated, causing;
•Minor mucosal ulceration.
•Oral burning sensation.
•Increased overgrowth of fungal organism.
Minor mucosal ulceration.
Dental caries
The high incidence and severity of dental
caries in DM patient have been associated
with;-
•Xerostomia.
•Increase gingival crevicular fluid glocuse
level.
•Increase dental plaque accumulation.
Dental caries
dental plaque accumulation
Gingivitis and Periodontitis
DM also an established risk factor for the
prevalence and severity of gingivitis and
periodontitis.
Progressive destructive periodontitis is
more common in patient with poor glycemic
control.
Poor hygiene and smoking contribute to the
increased incidence and severity of
periodontitis.
gingivitis
Periodontitis
Dental Mangement of
DM
Treatment the causes.
Control glocuse level
There is some risk factor may increase the dental problem as a follow;
