Importing Information into Oracle Financials Applications
Using Oracle Financials and Oracle Public Sector Financials imp ort
programs, you can integrate new or existing app lications such as
payroll, accoun ts receivable, accounts payable, and fixed assets into
your Oracle Financials app lications. You can imp ort accoun ting da ta
from your feeder systems. You can also import h istorical data from
your p revious accounting or m anagement systems.
The following lists show open interfaces in Oracle Financials and
related app lications. The lists tell you w here you can read in detail
about each open interface. You m ay also wan t to refer to the Oracle
Manufacturing and Distribution Open Interfaces Manual, Release 11i for
detailed docum entation on open interfaces in those prod ucts. Note
that almost all user guides and manu als referenced in this docum ent
are available in Adobe Acrobat pd f forma t on the Oracle App lications
Documentation CD.

Basic Importing Needs
Oracle Financials imp ort program s provide you w ith the features you
need to satisfy the following basic integration n eeds:
Import information in the easiest way possible, and
automatically convert the valid d ata you import into d ata that ismeaningful to you and your organization.
Import information from a va riety of environments, includ ing
your own and other accounting systems.
Import historical data from your previous accounting, sales
order or other m anagement systems to keep your records
consistent and up todate.
Review the results of your imp ort run. Identify which data hasbeen successfully imp orted, and an y errors which may have
occurred d uring the import p rocess.
Correct invalid data online that an imp ort program w as unable
to accept.

In add ition, several Oracle Financials import p rograms satisfy thefollowing add itional needs:
Validate the integrity of any da ta before introd ucing it into you r
Oracle Financials application
Choose to optionally archive your sou rce da ta each time you ru n
an import program
Definitions
Feeder Program
A custom p rogram you use to import you r d etail accounting
transactions from an external or feeder system into you r Oracle
Financials app lication. The type of feeder p rogram you w rite dep end s
on the environment from wh ich you are importing data.
ORACLE Tables
Rows and colum ns by wh ich data is organized in the ORACLE
Relational Database Managem ent System. Categories of information
are listed across the top of each table, while individu al cases are listed
dow n the left side. In this form you can readily visualize, un derstand
and use the information. Oracle Financials produ cts use ORACLE
tables to store the information you n eed to run you r business.
Table Columns
ORACLE tables consist of columns. Each column contains one kind of
information. We use the following convention for naming tab lecolumns: TABLE_NAME.COLUMN_NAME.
Column Reference
Column in a table wh ich references information stored in a column in
another table. When column s in d ifferent tables contain the same typ e
of information, the comm on information perm its entries in the two
tables to be combined or related to each other.

Column Types
Each column in a table can hold one type of value. The most common
types are:
A char column contains a sequence of up to 240
letters, num bers, pu nctuation m arks and special
characters like +, , % and $
A nu mber colum n contains a nu mber consisting ofdigits, a sign and a d ecima l point
A date colum n contains a d ate and time of day
Not Null Column
A column in w hich you m ust enter information. In other word s, a
column in wh ich the value m ay not be nu ll.
Importing Data From Your Feeder System
Oracle App lications can receive data from an import program which
your onsite MIS personnel can d evelop for you. Or, you m ay want to
use an Oracle consultant. The goal of your imp ort program is to
convert data from you r feeder system into a stand ard d ata format th atyour Oracle app lications can read an d then convert for fur ther
mod ification or p rocessing in you r Oracle app lication.

Writing a Feeder Program
The type of environment from wh ich you wan t to import data
determ ines the type of feeder program you need to write. For example,
you can u se SQL*Loader to write an impor t program to feed d ata from
a nonOracle system. Or, you can write a feeder program to impor t
historical data from your previous accoun ting system. Regard less of
the type of feeder program you write, the outpu t should be in standard

data format that an Oracle Applications imp ort program can use toconvert your import data into your Oracle Applications system.
Choosing a Feeder Program
You n eed to choose a tool for w riting a feeder program to extract data
from your existing ap plication system s p rinted reports, flat file,
relational d atabase, or other repository of app lication information.
Using a feeder p rogram you write, you popu late an OracleApp lications imp ort table with the information you wan t to introduce
to you r Oracle Finanicials system.
SQL*Loader is a pow erful and easytouse tool you can to write a
feeder p rogram. SQL*Loader lets you map elements of a regularly
formatted file, such as a listing or flat file, and sp ecify wh ich colum ns
of which tables to populate. Chances are, SQL*Loader is a pow erful
enough tool to use for your feeder p rogram. If you n eed to do more complex compu tations to extract or rearrange
information from your feeder system, you can choose from a variety of
programm ing languages to popu late an import table.
For examp le, you can u se any of the Oracleenhanced programming
langu ages, su ch as Pro*C, Pro*COBOL, or Pro*FORTRAN , as w ell as
SQL*Report.
