Chapter 2: Powering the Real-Time Enterprise

100x Faster Decision-MakingBusinesses must compete in today’s high-speed, always-onworld where customers are more demanding than ever. Withrelational databases powering the most mission-criticalapplications in enterprises today, database performance directlyinfluences the quality of business decision-making. Businessstakeholders need the ability to model scenarios quickly basedon up-to-date information to make decisions in the momentinstead of after the fact.

Oracle Database In-Memory transparently accelerates analyticsby orders of magnitude while simultaneously speeding uptransactions in mixed-workload systems. Leveraging SIMD vectorinstruction processing available in modern CPUs, OracleDatabase In-Memory is able to execute queries in parallel directlyfrom RAM at blazing speeds compared to traditional disk-based

methods. This enables database users to get immediateanswers to business questions that previously took hours withoutthe need to restrict functionality or accept compromises, complexity, and risk.

Analytics Based on Up-to-Date TransactionsOracle Database In-Memory seamlessly extends existing Oracledatabases with a new high-speed in-memory column formatwhile preserving the existing row format on disk. The dual-formatarchitecture of Oracle Database In-Memory represents databasetables simultaneously in both formats. Reporting and analyticsworkloads automatically use the in-memory column format onthe production database while transactional workloads use thetraditional row format. By ensuring that both formats staytransactionally consistent, business stakeholders now have theability to run queries against the most recent and up-to-datetransactions.

Chapter 2: Powering the Real-Time Enterprise

Faster Mixed-Workload TransactionsEnterprises are increasingly consolidating databases into mixed-workload environments that both run analytical queries andprocess OLTP transactions. To accelerate mixed-workloadreporting, it is common to create dozens of analytic indexes onimportant tables. With the blazing speed of Oracle DatabaseIn-Memory, the manual effort and storage cost needed to buildanalytic indexes can now be eliminated.

By virtue of eliminating analytic index overhead, OLTP operationshave much less burden when processing transactions. Thus, byadopting an in-memory column store for faster analyticalprocessing, enterprises receive the benefit of acceleratingtransaction processing as well.

Implementation as Easy as Flipping on a SwitchAs an option of the industry-leading Oracle Database, OracleDatabase In-Memory can be implemented on any existing OracleDatabase system as easily as flipping a switch. As an option ofOracle Database, Oracle Database In-Memory offers a numberof benefits. First, database objects need not fit entirely inmemory. Oracle Database allows the use of mixed storage tiersfor balancing optimal performance with cost-efficiency. OracleDatabase In-Memory simply enables a new database-aware tierof storage for the database administrator to control.

With Oracle Database In-Memory, your databases can grow toany size while keeping costs low by transparently blendingmemory with flash and disk.

Second, all of Oracle Database’s industry-leading datamanagement, availability, and security features remain fully inoperation. This means any existing Oracle Database–compatibleapplication automatically and transparently benefits fromcolumnar in-memory processing without additional programmingor application changes. Database administrators and applicationdevelopers need not rewrite, rebuild, or migrate theirapplications.

Chapter 2: Powering the Real-Time Enterprise

In-Memory Fault ToleranceAs enterprises run mission-critical applications on OracleDatabase, fault tolerance of performance characteristics arecritical as well. Server failures can potentially cause degradationof performance while new server memory stores are populatedwith relevant data and queries are served from disk. OracleDatabase In-Memory’s fault tolerance feature eliminates the riskof this degradation by optionally mirroring data across the serversof a cluster. Just as storage subsystems stripe and mirror dataacross disks to achieve high performance and high availability,Oracle Database In-Memory distributes and duplicatesin-memory data across the servers of a cluster. If a server fails, queries transparently start using redundant copies of the datastored in the memory of surviving servers. Oracle DatabaseIn-Memory fault tolerance ensures that aggressive SLAs arenever compromised.

Simplified ManagementBeyond ease of implementation, Oracle Database In-Memorydramatically simplifies the operational tasks of a databaseadministrator. Complex data integration, tuning, and index-building operations are eliminated. Oracle Enterprise Manageralso makes it easy to monitor and measure the benefits ofin-memory columns. Database administrator productivity issignificantly enhanced with Oracle Database In-Memory.

Likewise, the elimination of separate copies of productiondatabases in siloed data marts enables significant capital costreduction and higher asset utilization. Server and storagehardware can be consolidated as data is loaded into the existingmemory of production systems. By eliminating time-consumingadministrative overhead and reducing capital costs, databaseprofessionals have the opportunity to provide radically better andmore-efficient service to their enterprises.

Smarter Decisions in Real TimeIT organizations have the opportunity to transform theirbusinesses and change a long-held view of analytics as anadjunct activity to business operations. Enterprises have aunique opportunity to merge business operations with businessanalytics into an environment of continuously optimized andinformation-powered business processes. Chapter 3: Database Consolidation

Maximize UtilizationConsolidation allows organizations to maximize IT resources andminimize idle compute cycles. This in turn lowers costs becausefewer resources are required to achieve the same outcomes.According to a 2013 survey of 160 organizations conducted bythe Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG), 36 percent ofrespondents said they are either planning to consolidate or havealready consolidated their critical-business application onto acommon database platform.

With the introduction of new multitenant capabilities, OracleDatabase 12c is the world’s first database optimized for databaseconsolidation. Until now, most database management systemscould only run one database at a time. In order to run multipledatabases on a single server, IT pros often had to provision andmaintain multiple instances—one for each database. Althoughthis architecture ensured strong security and separation of data,it required excessive overhead.

Oracle Multitenant offers all the benefits of managing manydatabases as one, yet retains the isolation and resource control

"The upgrade to Oracle Database 12cand the multitenant capabilities havegiven us a huge amount of benefits. We’ve been able to massively decrease ourhardware budget by about 75 percent. Ourconsolidation ratio on [Oracle] Database [12c] isabout five times what we were looking atpreviously. We’ve been able to significantly reducethe time, effort, and, therefore, cost associatedwith standing up new environments and makingclones for existing customer environments."James Anthony, Technology Director, e-DBA

Chapter 3: Database Consolidation

Deliver Database as a ServiceDatabase as a service (DBaaS) is a cloud paradigm that enablesusers to request database environments via a self-service portal.Oracle Database 12c provides a new architecture to simplifyDBaaS environments. Oracle’s flagship enterprise managementsolution, Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c, automatesadministrative tasks such as provisioning databases, meteringusage, and troubleshooting issues. Together, these solutionsprovide a self-service portal that allows users to requestdatabase capacity and perform management operations—withouttying up IT resources.

The DBaaS model can help standardize hardware and software, simplify technical support, and give users the autonomy toprovision database resources on their own. Meteringconsumption provides visibility into actual usage so that peopleonly pay for what they use—instead of paying up front for morecapacity than they might otherwise need. With DBaaS, ITdepartments can increase agility, minimize costs, and reducerisk.

Chapter 4: Database Storage Optimization

Information Lifecycle Management BreakthroughsFor most organizations, data volume doubles every two to threeyears, making storage one of the costliest elements of today’s ITbudgets. This increase in data volume also makes it more difficultto maintain performance requirements. That’s why forward-looking IT organizations are adopting advanced databasetechnologies that automate compression and storage tiering toscale with the growth of data volume while also improvingdatabase performance.

For example, Oracle Database 12c supports advancedinformation lifecycle management (ILM) capabilities thatautomatically compress and store data according to businessand performance needs. The Heat Map and Automatic DataOptimization features in Oracle Advanced Compression worktogether to automatically compress and move data based ondata usage. These technologies enable users to reduce theirstorage footprint across tiers of storage while improvingdatabase performance. Heat Map provides detailed insights intohow data is being accessed. Automatic Data Optimization usesthis information to automate compression and storage tieringaccording to user-defined policies.

Many IT organizations implement storage tiering by deployingdata on different tiers of storage so that less-accessed (“colder”)data is migrated away from the costliest and fastest storage—stillavailable, but at slower speeds—the effect on the overallapplication performance is minimized, due to the rarity ofaccessing colder data.

Chapter 4: Database Storage Optimization

But even with the right storage and compression capabilities, deciding which data should reside where and when to migratedata from one tier to another remains a serious challenge. OracleDatabase 12c addresses this challenge with features thatautomatically discover data access patterns and uses theinformation to automatically optimize how data is organized.

Oracle Advanced CompressionOracle Advanced Compression can compress all types ofdata—including relational (table) data, unstructured (file) data, network data, and backup data. This unique technologysignificantly reduces the storage footprint while improvingperformance across the entire IT infrastructure—without requiringany changes to your applications.

Chapter 5: Defense-in-Depth Security

Respond Decisively to ThreatsInsecure database configurations can make corporate datasusceptible to intrusion. Attacks can come from many places, including socially engineered e-mails, legitimate user credentials, and SQL injections designed to modify or extract sensitiveinformation from corporate databases.

It’s not just external thieves and malcontents you need to worryabout. The 2013 IOUG Enterprise Data Security Survey foundthat the #1 risk to organizations, for the second year in a row, ishuman error. Internal system administrators and DBAs are anever-present security risk based on their ability to accesssensitive information and configure systems, modify databases, and grant privileges to others. In some cases, importantproduction data moves through dev/test environments where anydeveloper can see it.

The stakes have never been higher: security and data breachesrepresent billions of dollars in lost business. They often requiretedious and expensive remediation and can cause irreparabledamage to your corporate reputation, eroding customer confidence.

Adopt a Comprehensive Defense-in-Depth StrategyOracle Database 12c was designed with security foremost inmind. It enforces a multilayered security strategy that includespreventive, detective, and administrative controls. Newcapabilities such as privilege analysis, conditional auditing, realapplication security, data redaction, mandatory realms, andintegration with Oracle Multitenant make Oracle Database 12cthe most secure database in Oracle history. And simplified setupprocedures let you take advantage of advanced technologies forencryption, auditing, and access control—without impacting yourbusiness operations.

Chapter 6: Maximum Availability

Database technology is fundamental to business operations.Whether it’s booking orders or predicting equipment failures, enterprises rely on up-to-the-second information to make sounddecisions. A single outage can have devastating consequences, potentially causing millions of dollars in losses and irreparabledamage to a company’s reputation. The growth in mission-criticalinformation is further driving the need for highly availabledatabase solutions to ensure continuous access to applicationsduring any unplanned or planned outage.

Oracle Database high-availability (HA) technologies, collectivelyreferred to as Oracle Maximum Availability Architecture, providecomplete resiliency against all types of outages—fromcomponent failures to natural disasters. Industry-leading OracleHA technology such as Oracle Real Application Clusters (OracleRAC) provides the highest levels of server HA while OracleActive Data Guard protects data and applications againstsitewide outages. Oracle GoldenGate lets you perform a varietyof planned activities online, including upgrades, databaseconsolidation, and cross-platform migrations.

Eliminate the Trade-Off Between Performanceand Availability

New capabilities in Oracle Database 12c help businesses delivereven higher levels of availability and data protection for criticaldatabases—enabling zero data loss and zero downtime.

Replicating data synchronously to a standby site is the bestprotection against data loss in the event of a primary site outage. However, this usually means slower database performance, especially when your primary and standby sites are on differentsides of the continent—or on different continents altogether.Oracle eliminates this trade-off between performance and dataprotection with the new Far Sync Instance feature in OracleActive Data Guard. Far Sync Instance lets you maintain asynchronized standby database at any location without worryingabout performance degradation. Not only can you eliminate anysingle point of failure, but you can also ensure zero-data-loss

replication across any distance while optimizing databaseperformance.

Enable Application ContinuityHave you tried to order merchandise online, only to have ascreen time out on you or display a message asking you toresubmit your information? This means that a failure hasoccurred while the transaction was in progress, preventing it fromcompleting. Imagine what happens to your business whenhundreds or thousands of transactions are either lost orduplicated. The new Application Continuity feature in OracleDatabase 12c protects applications and minimizes userdisruption by automatically replaying “in-flight” transactions afteran outage has occurred. It enables continuous service andeffectively masks the outage from your end users andapplications.

Deliver Intelligent Workload BalancingOrganizations with geographically dispersed data centers oftenhave a hard time optimizing workloads for performance andavailability. Resources are often underutilized and service levelsmay not be met consistently. The new Global Data Servicesfeature in Oracle Database 12c enables you to simplifymanageability and better utilize replicated databases for disasterprotection or distributed HA. Global Data Services intelligently

balances workloads so you can make better use of your globaldatabase resources. It automatically fails over services acrossreplicated databases for higher availability and directs userconnections to the database that best optimizes service.

Eliminate Data Loss and Backup OverheadExponential data growth, shrinking backup windows, unexpectedoutages, and data loss continue to plague database backup andrecovery operations, consuming production resources andincreasing IT complexity. Oracle’s Zero Data Loss RecoveryAppliance (Recovery Appliance) is a revolutionary newengineered system specifically designed to protect Oracledatabases. It delivers zero to sub-second data loss protectionwith minimal impact on your production database servers andusers. It also provides incremental backups that eliminatebackup windows and enable you to restore databases to anypoint in time. Chapter 7: Data Warehousing and Big Data

Database technology is also the foundation for enterprise datawarehousing systems that enable businesses to make fast andhigh-quality, data-driven decisions. In the era of big data, information is now being generated much more quickly than itcan be consumed. Meanwhile, leveraging information to makecomplete business decisions is becoming ever more critical toenterprises. All of these factors increase demand forcomprehensive data warehousing and big data solutions.

Oracle provides the industry’s leading data warehousing platformfor delivering business insights across a wide range of activities, from optimizing customer experiences to increasing operationalefficiency. Oracle’s high-performance and optimized solutionsprovide in-database advanced analytics and enhanced data setsfrom big data to drive increased innovation, profitability, andcompetitive advantage.

Better and Faster Decision-MakingQuickly discovering meaningful insight from high volumes ofinformation is a key challenge faced by organizations. OracleDatabase In-Memory enables better and faster businessdecision-making by accelerating database performance withoutrequiring changes to existing applications. Oracle DatabaseIn-Memory introduces a new compressed columnar format thatenables any subset of a database, including an individual tableor partition, to be loaded in-memory and queried instantly. Anyapplication that runs on Oracle Database 12c can automaticallyand transparently take advantage of faster query processingwhile retaining all the functionality of Oracle Database 12c.

Oracle simplifies the deployment of high-performance datawarehousing systems with Oracle Exadata—an engineeredsystem with unique performance optimizations for enablingbetter and faster decision-making. Oracle Exadata Smart Scantechnology accelerates queries by looking for data only where it’smost likely to be found. This makes nearly every query go fasterby cutting out unnecessary work. Oracle Exadata Smart FlashCache technology automatically moves data to faster storagetiers to optimize query performance. By intelligently cachingdata, it replaces magnetic disk operations with lower-latency,solid-state memory operations.

Chapter 7: Data Warehousing and Big Data

Maximum Analytical Return on DataHigher volumes of data generally translate into higher-qualityanalysis. Using Oracle’s information lifecycle managementtechnologies—such as advanced compression andpartitioning—data warehouses can be easily scaled to handlegreater volumes of data without compromising queryperformance. Automated segmentation of data by usage enableshot data to be migrated to high-performance storage, while colddata can be actively archived to lower-cost media. By intelligentlyleveraging information lifecycle management technologies, businesses can multiply the benefits of higher data volumeswithout multiplying the cost.

Data warehouse consolidation is often constrained by the need tomove data to alternative systems for analytics. Using Oraclein-database analytics, business analysts can perform statisticalanalysis, data mining, and geospatial analysis without moving

data out of the database. Analytical tools include data-miningalgorithms, native SQL functions for basic statistical activities, and integration with statistical programming languages like R.Because these techniques are applied directly within thedatabase, the costs and latencies associated with datamovement are entirely eliminated.

Automated information lifecycle management and in-databaseanalytics enable business analysts to achieve faster time toinsight and higher analytical return on data. Meanwhile, thecapital expense and management footprint for IT is simpler andmore efficient.

Enhance Relational Data Sets with Nonrelational DataMuch of the growth in data volumes comes from unstructuredand semistructured data sources like mobile devices, socialmedia, and sensors. To generate business value from big data, unstructured and semistructured data must be captured,
