OPTOMETRY
Doctors of Optometry are independent primary health care providers who specialize inthe examination diagnosis treatment and management of diseases and disorders of thevisual system the eye and associated structures as well as the diagnosis of relatedsystemic conditions Optometrists are primary-care providers and therefore mustrecognize ocular and visual signs of disease understand the wide range of healthproblems affecting a patient and refer patients to appropriate specialists Someoptometrist work in a general practice while others work in specialties such as contactlenses geriatrics low vision services (for visually impaired patients) occupational vision(to proteet and preserve workers vision and minimize eye strain) pediatrics sports visionand vision therapy Other optometrists may choose to enter optometric education andorperform scientific research
Doctors of Optometry must successfully complete a four-year accredited degree programat one of the 17 schools or colleges of optometry in the United States Most studentsaccepted by a school or college of optometry have completed their undergraduate degreeThe requirements for admission vary but students wishing to study optometry shouldtake at least a year of biology or zoology chemistry general physics and collegemathematics The science courses should be pre-professional level courses designed forscience miiors and should include laboratory experience Each school has its ownadditional educational requirements
All optometry schools and colleges also require applicants to take the OptometryAdmission Test (OAT) a standardized examination designed to measure generalacademic ability and comprehension of scientific information The OAT includesQuantitative Reasoning Reading Comprehension Physics Biology General Chemistryand Organic Chemistry The OAT exam is computerized and examinees are allowed totake the exam an unlimited number of times but must wait at least 90 days betweentesting dates However only scores from the four most recent attempts and the totalnumber of attempts will be reported Online registration can be found on the Associationof Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO) website WII lVopledorg For additionalinformation on the OAT exam contact the Optometry Admission Testing Program 211East Chicago Avenue Suite 600 Chicago IL 60611-2678 800-232-2159
Potential optometry students may be evaluated on the basis of GPA performance on theOAT extra-curricular and community service activities personal interview professionalpotential etc Early application is desirable and deadlines range from October to April forthe various schools and colleges of optometry Each institution has its own guidelinestherefore students should contact the schools or colleges of their choice to obtain acatalog and specific application procedures Contact information can be obtained at theASCO website above Optometrists must be state licensed All states require graduationfrom an accredited professional optometric degree program as a prerequisite forlicensure Most states accept the results of the National Board of Examiners inOptometry
