OPS occupies two separate sites with our Infants Department situated in AnsonStreet, (between Torpy and Moulder Streets) and the Primary Department onthe corner of Sale and Kite Streets. This separation enables us to run twosmaller, more personal campuses and we believe this is beneficial to ourstudents.
An open door policy prevails at OPS as we believe a positive home and schoolpartnership enhances the effectiveness and valuing of learning.

CANTEEN
The school has a canteen which
operates under the direction of the P &C Canteen Committee. A group ofparents assist in this work on avoluntary basis and a roster is drawnup each term. If you are willing tohelp in this way, please advise theCanteen Supervisor. A price list ofgoods is distributed periodically duringthe year. The canteen at the Infantssite is closed on Mondays.
CLOTHING POOLA Clothing Pool operated by the P&C,has good quality second hand uniformsfor sale at reasonable prices. Theclothes have been donated by parentswhose children have grown out ofthem or moved on to High School.
The Clothing Pool is situated at Kite Stat the end of the Year 3 corridor and isopen on selected days as advertised in
the school newsletter.
BUSES
All children who wish to use bustransport to and from school need toapply for a bus pass from theDepartment of Transport. Applicationsare available from the office. Busesfrom most areas of Orange serviceOrange Public School.
Infants:All children are eligible for a bus passwhich entitles them to free bus travel.Bus arrivals and departures are fromthe Anson Street gate.
Primary:Children living more than 1.6kilometres from School are eligible fora bus pass which entitles them to freebus travel to their place of residence.
Bus arrivals and departures are fromboth the Kite and Sale Street
entrances. A term pass can bepurchased for primary aged childrenliving less than 1.6kms from the
school.

A 5 minute only drop off bay existsat the Infants Site on the school sideof Torpy Street, from the corner tothe entrance gate.
A single Disabled parking spaceis available at the Infants site for thedropping off and collection of disabledchildren.

CHILDREN ARRIVING LATE/ORLEAVING SCHOOL EARLY
Children arriving at school after
9.10am must come to the front office(accompanied by parent/carer) toregister a late notice on the schoolsattendance register before going to theclassroom.
If you need to collect your child fromschool during the day for any reason,please, inform the teacher in writing.This enables the teacher to have thestudent at the Office for you to collect
and complete an Early Release Form.
VOLUNTEERS AND PARENTSVISITING THE SCHOOL
Any volunteers or parents who enterthe school grounds, need to report tothe Office to sign a visitors / volunteersbook and collect an identificationbadge.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Anglican, Baptist, Catholic and UnitingChurch clergy and lay people combineto instruct the children in non-
denominational classes. Students stayin their home class for Scripturelessons each Wednesday. Non-denominational school services areheld at Easter and Christmas.Buddhist lessons are also provided.
If you do not wish your child to attendReligious Education lessons, pleasenotify the school in writing and yourchild will be supervised in anotherroom by a class teacher.
PHOTOGRAPHS
Each year, c lass groups arephotographed as well as individual or
family group photos as requested byparents. Sporting teams, culturalgroups or individuals who representthe school are also photographed.These photos are available forpurchase by parents.
BOOK CLUB
The opportunity to purchase goodquality childrens literature is available
through Scholastic Australia BookClub. Information flyers on whatsavailable are issued twice a term.Orders, with payment, should beplaced in an envelope and returned tothe school office. Cheques are to bemade payable to the school.
CHARITIES
The main charity OPS supports isStewart House. This charity is
supported by staff and students ofNSW State Schools. Stewart House isa holiday house for children who reallyneed a break for health, economic oremotional reasons.
We also support many other charitieson a regular basis and some when aparticular need arises.
Charity appeal days follow a variety of
themes to create and maintainstudent interest and input.

SENIOR STUDENTREPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL(SRC)
At the end of each year, candidates forthe position of Senior SRC arenominated from the Year 5 classes. Afinal twenty four candidates areselected by grade peers. An election isheld and twelve representatives areelected by the students. Thesetwelve (six girls and six boys), thenmeet and elect the school captains andvice-captains. They hold theirpositions for twelve months in whichtime they stand as student models andassist in organisational matters.Elected House Captains are alsoconsidered members of the SRC. Eachyear they travel to Sydney toparticipate in the National YoungLeaders Conference.
STUDENT COUNCIL (Primary)
Senior SRC are of course automatic
members of the Student Council alongwith two elected members from eachclass within the school. Other childrenmay attend Student Council meetingsas an observer. The Council meetsregularly with the Teacher Facilitatorand the agenda comes from mattersraised in classes or the Councilmeeting.
SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES
Infants:Each week grade assemblies are heldat the Infants School. In Year 2leadership is encouraged where classestake turns to organize and run theassembly and share items of work andperform for their peers. At all gradeassemblies, Passports To The StarsAwards are presented along withReading Awards. Children take part ingroup singing, news of upcomingevents is given and school values andrules are reinforced.
Each week a K-2 assembly is heldwhere special mention is made ofimportant issues relating to Infants
school, the flag is raised and theNational Anthem is sung. Social Skillsand the school PBL focus arediscussed at assemblies and taught inclass.
Primary:Each week there are formalassemblies, for the Junior Primary andSenior Primary school. The nationalanthem and school song are bothsung at these assemblies and theschool prayer is said. Often a classwill share with their peers a unit ofwork they are doing through reading,music or drama. Parents are mostwelcome to attend these weeklyassemblies.
Children who have gained courtesy orcitizenship points for the week arerecognised. News of upcoming eventsa n d r e c o g n i t i o n f o r g o o dsportsmanship is given. Social Skillsand the school PBL focus arediscussed at assemblies and taught inclass.

THE LIBRARY
Infants:
The children come to the library forone hour per week, where they areallowed to borrow books that they takehome in their library bag. During thistime, the children develop early libraryskills relating to all aspects of thelibrary. Older children develop earlyresearch skills in preparation for theirprimary years. There is a wideselection of both fiction and non-fictionbooks available and the children
always manage to find reading materialthat they really enjoy!
The Infants Library is a valuable andintegral part of a childs early years atOrange Public School. The studentshave the opportunity to participate inthe Premiers Reading Challenge.
The large 21 Core library, to becompleted by 2011, also allows a
space fo r per fo rmances andassemblies.
Primary:We have an extensive library which ison the f irst f loor above theAdministration area. It features aspecialist librarian with clerical backup.
The Video Conferencing Room can beseparated from the main open-spacearea by a soundproof partition. Formalweekly lessons develop in the studentsconf idence to access books ,magazines, pictures and the like forrecreational reading or gatheringinformation.Networked computers areavailable in the library.
Students have the opportunity toparticipate in the Premiers ReadingChallenge.
TECHNOLOGY IN THE SCHOOL
The school has a very advancedcomputer network with wireless
operating on both sites so thatteachers and children can have a highlevel of internet access from anywherein the school. In 2010, both sites arebeing connected by optic fibre. Thes c h o o l n e t w o r k m a n a g e sapproximately 150 computers. Theschool has a state of the art videoconferencing room where classes areable to participate in virtualexcursions or link with other schools
to enrich learning.

Teachers have all been provided withLaptops so that they can usetechnology in their teaching and the P& C continues to work hard to provide
interactive whiteboards for eachclassroom. Each student has apersonal website on the schoolsintranet where they are able toshowcase their work. Children developamazing skills in the use of digitalmovie making, claymation, blogs,wikis and podcasts.

INFANTS:
In the Infants School emphasis is onthe development of the fundamentalskills of movement including hopping,skipping, running, jumping, throwing,catching and kicking. Minor games arealso promoted in sport sessions withmodified T-Ball, soccer, hockey, cricketand touch football as well as groupgames to practice skills.
An Infants sports day is held in term 4,where children march in their housecolours. The emphasis for the carnival
is on participation with all childrenreceiving an award for their efforts.
Fitness programs promote activitythrough walking, aerobics, skippingand relays.
Children are able to borrow classsports equipment for use in theplayground to encourage group playand active participation during
playtime.
*Intensive 10 day swimming lessonsare offered to non-swimmers in Years2-6 as part of the Department ofEducation Learn to Swim program.
PRIMARY:
OPS has a strong sporting tradition.All students participate in sport whichis held weekly on Friday in twoseparate sessions, Juniors (Years 3&4)and Seniors (Years 5&6). Childrenparticipate in sports such as volleyball,netball, touch, Aussie Rules, soccer,basketball, athletics, netball, T-ball andcricket. The program incorporates amixture of skills and games.
The students compete in three sportingcarnivals over the year. House coloursare worn, banners are made and
chants created. The house spirit isvery strong on these occasions.
The Swimming Carnival is held inTerm 1. The Athletics Carnival is heldearly in the year and the Annual Cross
Country run is held mid year. Theschool travels to Macquarie Woods forthis event.
OPS enters teams in many PrimarySchools Sport Association KnockoutCompetitions including netball,basketball, hockey, soccer, cricket,softball, rugby league, touch footballand tennis. We also participate inSwimming, Athletics and Cross
Country competitions. OPS enjoysg rea t success i n a l l t hesecompetitions, with qualified andmotivated staff members guidingteams and individuals in their chosensports. OPS has many WesternRegion Representatives each year andan impressive range of WesternRegion Championship titles in itskeeping.
SCHOOL SPORTING HOUSESThere are four houses in our school: Arunta - Green

There is a keenly contestedcompetition among the houses to seewho can amass the most house pointseach year. The winning housereceives the shield at Presentation
Night. House points are given as anincentive to children and weeklyprogress scores are given atassemblies. This system creates greatteam spirit.

GIFTED AND TALENTEDPROGRAMMES
Catering for the needs of gifted and
talented students at Orange PS is ahigh priority. Along with differentiationof regular classroom work, we offer awithdrawal enrichment program forstudents with high learning potential.The withdrawal program is run inStages and focuses on critical andcreative thinking skills, communicationskills and independent research skills.It also incorporates aspects such astime-management skills, organisation
of ideas, risk-taking and performing topotential.
For the past 5 years, we have hadseveral students selected to take partin the Western NSW i.xtend Program(an online program that caters forgifted and talented students in Years5-8), and we have recently hadstudents selected for the new virtualselective high school for WesternNSW. Each year, we enter teams intoTournament of Minds and often comeaway with outstanding results.
Pre2Orange Public is amember of the Pre2Learning Community.Ten local primary schoolshave combined togetherto o f fer enr ichedcurriculum practice,learning excursions andpedagogy. The expertise,
experience and equipment of theconnected schools are shared to offera broader experience using the widercurriculum offering of each schoolsteaching staff and resources.

MUSIC PROGRAM (Primary)
The school band program containswoodwind, brass, percussion andkeyboard sections.
The school string orchestra containsviolins, violas, cellos and double bass.The school has up to 90 entries in thelocal Orange Eisteddfod. The musicprogram works with E2 Experience inw o r k s h o p s a n d c o m b i n e dperformances.
Tuition is provided and regular
performances are given. Instrumentsmay be hired locally or from the schoolwhich has a small number of mainlybrass instruments for hire.
CHOIRS
Choir is available to our students fromyears 1-6, with regular performancesinside and outside of school. Ourchoirs often have between 80 and 100members as maximum participation isencouraged. Our 3 choirs - Stage 1,Stage 2 and Stage 3 perform in theEisteddfod each year and do very well.
THE PERFORMING AND VISUALARTS
Orange Public School provide a strongfoundation in the Arts and provides avariety of opportunities in drama,dance and art.
The Primary school students have theopportunity to perform in competitiveand non-competitive events in Choral,Music, Dance, Drama and Visual Arts,at local and state .

ABSENCES
If your child is absent from school for any reason, you are required to notify theschool with an explanation. If you wish to verbally inform the school of yourchilds absence, please phone the school office on the morning of theabsence.
If notification is being made after the absence date, a note needs to be sent tothe class teacher stating the childs christian and surname, date of and reasonfor the absence. We ask that parents also print their name as well as addingtheir signature to the letter. If notification has not been received within 7 days
of the child returning to school, the absence is recorded as an UnjustifiedAbsence.
Health
From the NSW Department of School Education:All children starting Kindergarten are required to provide an
immunisation certificate, a record of your childs immunisation status.These can be obtained from your doctor or Medicare.

MEDICATION
When a medical practitioner hasprescribed medication that must beadministered during the school day, itis the role of parents to:

ASTHMA & ALLERGIES
If your child suffers from Diabetes,has severe asthma, severe allergies

Primary children who have asthmapuffers and Epi-pens are encouragedto carry them at all times. Infantsstudents medication is kept in the

FIRST AID / SICK STUDENTS
Occasionally children become sick at
school and we place them in our FirstAid Room. Parents are stronglyadvised not to send sick children toschool. It is vital that all contactdetails for your child are up todate and accurate in case we needto get in touch with you throughthe school day. Basic first aid forinjuries suffered at school isadministered.
An ambulance will be called totransport a child to hospital shouldthe need arise. Every effort will bemade to contact the parents oremergency contacts prior to calling anambulance. A staff member willaccompany the sick/injured child tohospital in the ambulance and staywith them until a parent/carerarrives. The P&C has purchasedAmbulance Cover for all students
enrolled at the school.

Orange Public School is an activePositive Behaviour for Learning(PBL) school.
At OPS we have a committed PBL team,comprising teachers and executive fromboth the Infants and the Primary site. Theteam works in conjunction with the entirestaff to create the best possible learningenvironment for the students of OPS.
PBL is a long term process to help createa safer and more effective school, bystructuring the learning environment tosupport the academic and social successof all students.
PBL is based upon research and is provento significantly reduce the occurrence ofproblem behaviours in schools. PBL helpsschools to educate all children bydeveloping research-based, school wide,and classroom discipline systems.
Rockets and Comets
Children are awarded small stars when
they are Responsible, Respectful, Co-operative and Honest in various areas ofthe school. The stars are placed on theirclass rocket. When the class rocket is fullthe children place a large star to indicatethis achievement on a comet in thecanteen area at theprimary or the libraryat the infants. Whenevery class earnstheir class star theSchool Representative
Council choose anappropriate reward.
Passport to the Stars
Every year each child is given a bookletcalled a Passport to the Stars, which is anindividual reward system. There are 8levels and each level achieved earns thechild a reward. Children may achievepoints on their passport for displayingrespect, honesty, co-operation or
responsibility.
Our Passport to the Stars has eightlevels. Each level in the passport consistsof stars that the children need to fill.They receive a stamp or sticker in their
passport when the teacher noticessomething wonderful that they havedone. When they complete a level intheir passport, they receive an awardduring grade assemblies. These awardsculminate in the OPS Star Badge forLevel 8.
Skills Room and Activity Room
Occasionally children may need supportin learning to make better choices about
their behaviour and this may require avisit to the skills room or activity room atlunchtime. Here the students are guidedby a teacher through discussion, hasslelogs or games developing positive socialskills.
The Hierarchy and ManagementSteps
To promote consistent teacher
management of student behaviour, ahierarchy of mild, moderate and seriousbehaviours have been linked with themanagements steps to be followed byteachers and executive. This will supportstudents, as management techniques areconsistently applied across the schoolsetting.

ADVICE TO PARENTS
It is not wise for children to bringexpensive or precious toys to school(unless requested for instructional
purposes by the teacher, who in suchcircumstances would supervise theiruse) as they can be easily mislaid. Noresponsibility will be taken by staff forsuch possessions which are lost orbroken at school.
Boys and girls with pierced earsare requested to wear studs only.
Mobile phones are NOT to be kept
on the childs person during the schoolday. They must be deposited to theoffice on arrival at school and collectedat the end of the day. This is a NSWDepartment Of Education and Trainingruling.
SUPPORT SERVICES
Our school currently provides a widerange of student support services.
The school counsellor is available toassist with individual assessment,counselling and assistance withindividual programs.
Our support teachers assist withchildren from Non-English speakingbackgrounds, those with hearing orvision difficulties, children with learningdifficulties or children with languagedifficulties.
There is a special education unit,
catering for children in years 3-6, whoare experiencing language or learningdifficulties. We have a number of
School Learning Support Officers whoassist children with special needs inmainstream classes.
STUDENT ASSISTANCE SCHEME
Some funding is provided to schoolsunder the above scheme to assistparents who find themselves infinancial difficulty when money isneeded for their child/children to
participate in activities at school.The school can provide part assistancefor the purchase of class equipment,school workbooks, school uniformsand can assist with excursions. Themoney is limited and is allocated onan annual basis so parents need tocomplete an application form whichcan be obtained from the office ateither site.
All applications will be treated in strictconfidence.
CRUNCH & SIP
Crunch&Sip is a set break to eat fruit
(or salad vegetables) and drink water
in the classroom. Students 're-fuel'

PARENTS AND CITIZENS
Orange Public School has a committedand enthusiastic P&C Association whichmeets on the first Monday of eachmonth at 7.00pm, alternating betweenthe Infants and Primary sites. Parents,as partners in education, areencouraged through P&C to play anactive role in the education of theirchildren.
PARENTAL CONTRIBUTION
Over the years, parents havegenerously supported the school bymaking an annual contribution which isused to purchased school resourcesthat we would otherwise not be able toprovide your children.
School Contributions for 2010 were setat $50 per student per year by theP & C. This is reviewed at their AnnualGeneral Meeting.

NEWSLETTER
This Kindergarten to Year 6 publicationis distributed via the youngest studentseach Wednesday and informs parentsof happenings within the school,requests assistance, congratulatescommunity members and advertisesworthwhile community activities. It isour l ifel ine to our parents.Newsletters can also be downloadedfrom the school website.
INFORMATION EVENINGS
These are held early in Term 1.Parents and care providers are madeaw a r e o f g r a de an d c l a s srequirements and are given an outlineof the years program.
REPORTING STUDENTPROGRESS
Reports have been designed to complywith the expectations of the Federaland State Governments. All reports
except Kinder, are set up to report tothe word equivalent of the A to Escalei.e. Outstanding, High, Sound,Basic and Limited.
Interviews with teachers are plannedfollowing the distribution of the firstreport. They can also be arranged atany time during the year simply bymaking an appointment with yourchilds teacher.
PERSONAL LEARNING PLANS
All students identified as G&T,Aboriginal and Students with SpecialNeeds will have a Personal LearningPlan. Parents of these children will beinvited to a 3 way interview to assistin developing their childs plan.

BEST START- Kindergarten
When children enter Kindergarten theyare assessed on their knowledge, skilland understanding that they bring toschool, in the areas of literacy andnumeracy. NAPLAN TESTS - National
Assessment and Planning forLiteracy and Numeracy.
These are completed by students inYears 3 and 5. The tests coveraspects of literacy and numeracy andparents receive an individual reportoutlining their childs results. At thesame time, the test results,individually and collectively, providevaluable information for the school.
ABORIGINAL PROGRAMS
Our school has a strong commitmentto Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander programs. Our major schoolfocus is the Make It Count projectwhich aims to improve the results ofthe ind igenous s tudents inMathematics, through improvedt e a c h i n g a n d c o m m u n i t yinvolvement. All indigenous studentshave their own personalised learningplan and we also have regularmeetings for our students andcommunity members. Orange Public

ARMALEKA
Armaleka, our school magazine, iscompiled in Term 4 each year. Allchildren have an opportunity to havewritten or drawn work published in Armaleka. The name comes fromthe first two letters of each of ourSporting Houses. The Armalekamagazine has been published annuallysince 1970. It provides a record ofevents in the life of the OPScommun i ty and r e f l e c t s ou rachievements in the academic,cultural, artistic, social and sportingareas. Armaleka is a great momentofor all students.
EASTER HAT PARADE (Infants)
Our first K-2 performance of the yearis the Easter Hat Parade. The childrenmake their Easter Hats at home andwear them for the parade.

END OF YEAR PRESENTATIONS
Christmas Concert and/orPresentation Assembly(Infants)At the end of each year a Christmascelebration will be held. The childrendonate gifts for the Giving Tree, to bedistributed to needy children in thecommunity. Year 2 awards arepresented to a boy and girl, elected bytheir peers, for Courtesy andCitizenship. Grandparents and parentsare invited to attend and each studentreceives a certificate from their teacherto congratulate the children for theirefforts throughout the year. This eventis a memorable culmination of thechildrens school year.
Presentation Night (Primary)Our Annual Presentation Night is theculmination of our school year.Outstanding ach ievements byindividuals and groups within theschool are recognised and celebrated.Presentation Night is held at theOrange Function Centre and isattended by students, parents, staff
and friends.
YEAR 2 FAREWELLThere has been a long standingtradition for the Year 2 teachers to
farewell our Year 2 students from ourK-2 site. The Year 2 students playparty games, dance and share partyfood. They cut a special cake tocelebrate the next step in their schoollife.
YEAR 6 FAREWELLThere has been a long standingtradition at OPS to formally farewellthe graduating Year 6 students. Thefarewell is a formal meal for all of thegraduating students, followed by asocial to which Year 5 is invited. Bothevents are hosted by the parents andstudents of Year 5.
