WHAKAUMU TRACK: out-and-back fun for more advanced riders, exploring superb native forest, including nikau, beech and rimu.

TAHEKE ROAD/WHAKAUMU TRACK
OTARA STOPBANK TRAIL OTARA EAST RD
ADVANCED/GRADE 4: 10KM EACH WAY FROM WAIAUA SHELTER
A great way to extend a Dunes Trail ride. After 1.5km of the Motu Road, turn onto Gaskill Road (E),
then left after the river. The road turns to gravel. Turn right onto Taheke Road (F), which rises into
forest. After 5km of gravel, there’s a forestry gate, usually locked. Walk round this then after
50m veer right to Whakaumu Track (G). The rideable track is 4km long, fairly technical
riding in superb forest. Be alert for possible forestry traffic.
MOTU ROAD TRAIL
EASY/GRADE 2: 10KM EACH WAYThe spectacular Dunes Trail starts in
Memorial Park (A), where there’s car parking, a shelter, drinking fountain and toilets. You
cross the Pakowhai ki Otutaopuku bridge over the Otara River. The first beach access is at 1km (not for swimming). There are several picnic/rest stops, including Hukuwai Beach with unpatrolled swimming (B). At 5km, a boardwalk crosses the sand with large pou (carved poles) overhead. At Tirohanga, pop to the roadside store for icecreams (C). Turn at 9km, where the trail
goes roadside (D), or carry on another 1km to Waiaua riverside shelter
and the Motu Road.
INTERMEDIATE/GRADE 3: 10KMIf you’ve ridden the Pakihi Track and you’re wanting slightly longer way to get back to
Opotiki, this is it. Just after the Pakihi Road gravel ends, turn onto Otara East Road (H), crossing the
river bridge. It is an undulating, partly unsealed road. Cross back over the Otara River (L) and onto Gault
Road, which connects back to Otara Road and Te Rere Pa Road, to ride back to the start of the Dunes Trail.
EASY/GRADE 2: 4KMThe scenic way to ride back to Opotiki. Or a family-friendly out-and-back ride from Memorial Park. The only ‘climbs’ are onto the river stopbank, from where you get a good view of the water and river birds. The southern end of the stopbank trail starts at the end of Te Rere Pa Road (J), gravel trail all the way to Memorial Park.
