What are opiates?•Opiates are narcotic drugs.•Narcotic drugs are derived from opium and include legal and illegal drugs such as Oxycodone and Heroin.
Examples of prescription opiates• Fentanyl (Duragesic®)•Hydrocodone (Vicodin®)•Oxycodone (OxyContin®)•Oxymorphone (Opana®)• Propoxyphene (Darvon®)•Hydromorphone (Dilaudid®)•Meperidine (Demerol®)•Diphenoxylate (Lomotil®)
•Among teenagers, prescription drugs have the highest abuse rate after marijuana with about half of the teens abusing painkillers over any other prescription drug.
Effects•These drugs are depressant drugs – they slow down the Central Nervous System (CNS)•CNS is the brain and spinal cord. • Includes the heart, muscles, and lungs.
Effects•Opiates reduce:• Tension• Anxiety• Aggression• Pain
•Opiates cause:• Drowsiness• Inability to concentrate• Apathy
Signs of use•Physical effects include:•Constriction of the pupils•Flushing of the face and neck•Constipation•Nausea•Slowed breathing•Slowed activity
