OPERATOR SAFETY• Dress properly. Always wear safety

giasses or simitar eye protection whenoperating, or performing maintenance,on your unit (safety glasses are avail-able). Eye protection should bemarked Z87.

• Always wear face or dust mask if op-eration is dusty.

• Always wear heavy, long pants, tongsleeves, boots, and gloves. Wearingsafety teg guards is recommended.

TRANSPORTING AND STORAGE• Stop the unit before carrying.• Allow engine to cool; secure unit be-

fore storing or transporting in vehicle.• Empty the fuel tank before storing or

transporting the unit. Use up fuet leftin the carburetor by starting the en-gine and tetting it run until it stops.

• Store unit and fuel in area where fuelvapors cannot reach sparks or openflames from water heaters, electricmotors or switches, furnaces, etc.

• Store unit so line timiter blade cannotaccidentally cause injury. The unitcan be hung by the tube.

STOP SWITCHThe STOP switch is used to stop the en-gine. To stop the engine, push and holdthe switch in the STOP position until theengine stops.PRIMER BULBThe PRIMER BULB removes air fromthe carburetor and fuel tines and fitlsthem with fuel. This atiows you to startthe engine with fewer pulls on thestarter rope. Activate the primer bulbby pressing it and aliowing it to returnto its original form.

CHOKEThe CHOKE helps to supply fuel to theengine to aid in cold starting. Activatethe choke by moving the choke lever tothe FULL CHOKE position. After the en-gine attempts to start, move the choketever to the HALF CHOKE position. Onceengine has started, move the choketever to the RUN position.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

_[k WARNING: Remove fuel capslowly when refueling.This engine is certified to operate onunIeaded gasoline. Before operation,gasotine must be mixed with a goodquaIity synthetic 2-cycte air-cooledengine oil. Mix gasoline and oil at a

ratio of 40:1. A 40:1 ratio is obtainedby mixing 3.2 ounces of oit with 1galton of unleaded gasoline. Includedwith this trimmer is a 3,2 ouncecontainer of oil. Pour the entirecontents of this container into 1 gallonof gasoline to achieve the proper fuelmixture. DO NOT USE automotive oii ormarine oil. These oils will causeengine damage. When mixing fuel,follow instructions printed oncontainer, Once oil is added togasoline, shake container momentarilyto assure that the fuel is thoroughlymixed. Always read and follow thesafety rules relating to fuel beforefueling your unit.

IMPORTANTExperienceindicatesthatalcoholblendedfuels(calledgasoholorusingethanolormethanol)canattractmois-turewhichleadstoseparationandformationofacidsduringstorage.Acidicgascandamagethefuelsys-temofanenginewhileinstorage.Toavoidengineproblems,emptythefuelsystembeforestoragefor30daysorlonger.Drainthegastank,starttheengineandletitrununtilthefuellinesandcarburetorareempty.Usefreshfuetnextseason.Neveruseengineorcarburetorclean-erproductsinthefueltankorperma-nentdamagemayoccur.SeetheSTORAGEsectionforaddition-alinformation,HOWTOSTOPYOURUNIT• Tostoptheengine,pushandhotd

5. Pult starter rope handle sharply untilengine sounds as if it is trying tostart, but do not pull rope more than6 times.

6. As soon as engine sounds as if it istrying to start, move choke lever toHALF CHOKE position,

Pull starter rope sharply untit engineruns, but no more than 6 pulls.NOTE: If the engine doesn't startafter 6 pulls (at the HALF CHOKEposition), move the choke lever tothe FULL CHOKE position and pressthe primer bulb 6 times. Squeezeand hold the throttle trigger and pullthe starter rope 2 more times. Movethe choke lever to the HALF CHOKEposition and pull the starter rope un-til the engine runs, but no more than6 pulls, tf the engine still doesn'tstart, it is probably flooded, Proceedto STARTING A FLOODED ENGINE.

8. Once the engine starts, allow it torun 10 seconds, then move thechoke lever to the RUN position.Allow the unit to run for 30 more se-conds at RUN before releasing thethrottle trigger. NOTE: If enginedies with the choke lever in theRUN position, move the choke le-ver to the HALF CHOKE positionand pull the rope untit engine runs,but no more than 6 pulls.

STARTING A WARM ENGINE1. Move the choke lever to the HALF

CHOKE position.2. Squeeze and hold the throttle trig-

ger. Keep throttle trigger fullysqueezed until the engine runssmoothly.

3, PulIstarterropesharplyuntilengineruns,butnomorethan6pulls.

4, Allowenginetorun15seconds,thenmovethechokelevertoRUN.

_IIWARNING: Always wear eyeprotection. Always use hearing protec-tion. Never lean over the trimmer head.Rocks or debris can ricochet or bethrown into eyes and face and causeblindness or other serious injury.

When operating unit, stand as shownand check for the following:• Wear eye protection and heavy

clothing.• Hold trigger handle with right hand

and assist handle with left hand.

• Hold unit so that engine is belowwaist level.

• Cut only from your right to your left toensure debris is thrown away fromyou. Without bending over, keep linenear and parallel to the ground andnot crowded into material being cut.

Do not run the engine at a higherspeed than necessary. The cuttingIine wilt cut efficiently when the engineis run at less than full throttle. At lowerspeeds, there is tess engine noise andvibration.The cutting line will last longer and willbe less likely to "weld" onto the spool.Always release the throttle trigger andallow the engine to return to idlespeed when not cutting.

HOW TO STOP YOUR UNIT• Release the throttle trigger.• Push and release the engine STOP

switch.

TRIMMER LINE ADVANCEThe trimmer line wiIt advance approxi-mately 2 inches (5 cm) each time thebottom of the trimmer head is tappedon the ground with the engine runningat full throttle.The most efficient line length is themaximum length allowed by the linetimiter. Always keep the shield in placewhen the tool is being operated.To advance line:

• Operate the engine at full throttle.• Hold the trimmer head parallel to

and above the grassy area.• Tap the bottom of the trimmer head

lightly on the ground one time. Ap-proximately 2 inches (5 cm) of linewill be advanced with each tap.

Always tap the trimmer head on agrassy area. Tapping on surfaces suchas concrete or asphalt can cause ex-cessive wear to the trimmer head.If the line is worn down to 2 inches (5cm) or less, more than one tap will berequired to obtain the most efficient linelength.

,_ WARNING: Use only 0,080 inch(2 mm) diameter round line. Othersizes and shapes of line witt not ad-vance properly and wilt result in im-proper cutting head function or cancause serious injury. Do not use othermaterials such as wire, string, rope,etc. Wire can break off during cuttingand become a dangerous missile thatcan cause serious injury.

CUTTING METHODS

Use minimum speed and do notcrowd the line when cutting aroundhard objects (rock, gravel, fenceposts, etc.), which can damage thetrimmer head, become entangled inthe line, or be thrown causing a seri-ous hazard.

can wrap such as small posts,trees or fence wire.

• For mowing or sweeping, use fullthrottte for a good clean job.

SCALPtNG- The sca_ping techniqueremoves unwanted vegetation downto the ground. Hold the bottom of thetrimmer head about 3 inches (8 cm)above the ground and at an angle. At-low the tip of the line to strike theground around trees, posts, monu-ments, etc. This technique increasesline wear.

The warranty on this unit does notcover items that have been sub ectedto operator abuse or neg igence. Toreceive full value from the warranty,the operator must maintain unit asinstructed in this manual. CHECK FOR DAMAGED ORWORN PARTS

Contact your Sears Service Center forreplacement of damaged or wornparts.• STOP Switch - Ensure STOP switch

INSPECT AND CLEAN UNIT ANDLABELS

• After each use, inspect completeunit for loose or damaged parts.Clean the unit and labels using adamp cloth with a mild detergent.

• Wipe off unit with a clean dry cloth.

CLEAN AIR FILTERA dirty air filter decreases engine per-formance and increases fuel consump-tion and harmful emissions. Alwaysclean after every 5 hours of operation.1. Clean the cover and the area

around it to keep dirt from falling intothe carburetor chamber when thecover is removed.

2. Remove parts as illustrated.NOTE: To avoid creating a fire hazardor producing harmful evaporativeemissions, do not clean filter in gaso-line or other flammable solvent.3. Wash the filter in soap and water.4. Allow filter to dry.5. Replace parts.

INSPECT MUFFLER AND SPARKARRESTING SCREEN

_WARNING: The muffleron this

As your unit is used, carbon depositsbuild up on the muffler and spark ar-resting screen.For normal homeowner use, however,the muffler and spark arresting screenwilt not require any service, After 50hours of use, we recommend that yourmuffler be serviced or replaced by yourSears Service Center.

REPLACE SPARK PLUGReptace the spark plug each year toensure the engine starts easier andruns better. Set spark plug gap at0.025 inch. Ignition timing is fixed andnonadjustable.

1. Twist, then putt off spark plug boot.2. Remove spark plug fTom cylinder

and discard.3. Replace with Champion RCJ-6Y

spark plug and tighten securely witha 3/4 inch socket wrench.

4, Reinstall the spark plug boot,

LINE REPLACEMENT1. Push and release the engine

STOP switch.2. Disconnect the spark plug wire.3. Remove spool by firmly pulling on

tap button.4. Clean entire surface of hub and

spool.5. Replace with a pre-wound spool

(#71-85930), or cut two lengths of12-1/2 feet (3.8 meters) of 0<080" (2mm) diameter line.

rope, string, etc., which can break offand become a dangerous missile.6. Insert ends of line about t/2 inch

(1 cm) into the small holes on theinside of the spool.

7. Wind line evenly and tightly ontospool. Wind in the direction of thearrow on the spool.

8. Push the Iine into the notches, leav-ing 3 to 5 inches (7 - 12 cm) un-wound.

g. Insert the line into the exit holes inthe hub as shown in the illustration.

REPLACING THE CUTTING HEAD1. Align hole in the dust cup with the

hote in the side of the gearbox byrotating the dust cup<

2. Insert a small screwdriver intoaligned holes. This will keep theshaft f_om turning while removingand installing trimmer head.

3. While holding the screwdriver inposition, remove trimmer head byturning clockwise.

4. Thread reptacementtrimmer headonto the shaft by turning counter-clockwise. Tighten until secure.

CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT

,_ WARNING: Keep others awaywhen making idle speed adjustments.The trimmer head wilt be spinning dur-ing this procedure. Wear your protec-tive equipment and observe all safetyprecautions.

The carburetor has been carefully setat the factory. Ad ustments may benecessary if you notice any of the fo-Iowing conditions:• Engine will not idle when the throttle is

released.

Make adjustments with the unit sup-ported so the cutting attachment is offthe ground and will not make contactwith any object. Hold the unit by handwhile running and making adjust-ments. Keep aft parts of your bodyaway from the cutting attachment andmuffler.

Idle Speed AdjustmentAllow engine to idle. Adjust speed untilengine runs without stalIing (idlespeed too slow),• Turn idte speed screw clockwise to

increase engine speed if enginestalls or dies.

• Turn idle speed screw counterclock-wise to decrease engine speed.

Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alter-native in minimizing the formation offuel gum deposits during storage. Addstabilizer to the gasoline in the fueltank or fuel storage container. FoItowthe mix instructions found on stabilizercontainer. Run engine at least 3 min-utes after adding stabilizer,INTERNAL ENGINE• Remove spark plug and pour 1 tea-

spoon of 40:1,2-cycte engine oil (aircooled) through the spark ptugopening, Stowly pull the starter rope8 to 10 times to distribute oil,

• Replace spark ptug with new one ofrecommended type and heat range.

• Clean air filter.• Check entire unit for loose screws,

nuts, and bolts, Replace any dam-aged, broken, or worn parts,

• At the beginning of the next season,use onty fresh fuel having the propergasoline to oil ratio.

OTHER• Do not store gasoline from one sea-

son to another.• Replace your gasoline can if it starts
