1. PRECAUTIONS

a) When the DT4 is not used for a long time, check it at least once every three months.

b) Handle the DT4 with care. Avoid heavy shocks or vibration. c) If any problems are found with the rotatable portion, screws or optical

parts (e.g. lens), contact our agent. d) After removing the DT4 from the carrying case, close the case to

exclude dust. e) Never place the DT4 directly on the ground. f) Never carry the DT4 on the tripod to another site. g) Protect the DT4 with an umbrella against strong sunlight and rain. h) When the operator leaves the DT4, the vinyl cover should be placed

over the instrument. i) Always switch the power off before removing the internal battery. j) Always remove the battery from the DT4 before returning it to the

case. k) Do not wipe the display 0 , keyboard Q or the carrying case with

any organic solvent. I) When the DT4 is placed in the carrying case, follow the layout plan. m) Make sure that the DT4 and the protective lining of the carrying case

are dry before closing the case. (The case is hermetically sealed; if moisture is trapped inside, damage to the instrument could occur.)

MAINTENANCE

a) Wipe off any moisture if the instrument gets wet during operation.

b) Always clean the instrument before returning it to its case. The lens requires special care. Dust it off with the lens brush first, to remove minute particles. Then, after providing a little condensa- tion by breathing on the lens, wipe it with a soft, clean cloth or lens tissue.

c) Store the instrument in a dry room where the temperature remains fairly constant.

d) Check the tripod for loose fitting and loose screws.

The specifications and general appearance of the instrument may be altered at any time and may differ from those appearing in catalogues and the operator's manual.

@ The DT4 can be used not only as a highly-accurate, electronic digital theodolite, but as an electronic total station when combined with the REDmini2 or RED2A/L.

@ Both the horizontal and the vertical circles are provided with 0 index points. The horizontal index value is stored in the short-term memory, so that even after power is lost (i.e. battery change or automatic power cut-off), the previous index position can be recovered when the instrument is switched on and the circle is indexed again.

@ The tilt angle of the vertical axis is measured by an internal sensor. The vertical angle can be automatically compensated for this tilt angle and the compensated angle displayed.

@ The DT4 has an internal memory which stores the instrument parameter settings. The parameter functions can be changed by key operation and the new settings are memorized even after power off.

@ Any standard "AA" size batteries, rechargeable Ni-Cd or alkaline type (i.e. LR6 or R6P) batteries can be used.

e A RS-232C data-output connector is provided for use with a data collector or external computer. The DT4 can transmit horizontal and vertical angle data when used without EDM, and transmit slope distance, horizontal and vertical angle data when an EDM is being used to measure the distances.

4. BATTERY BDC21: MOUNTING AND CHECK Battery release 1) Ensure that the power switch @ is OFF. cover Release button 2) Mounting the battery:

Note on automatic vertical angle compensation

When the -'L mark is shown on the display, the vertical angle is automatically compen- sated for small tilt errors. The internal tilt sensor has a range of +-3' and a resolution of 5".

6) Electronic field books SDR series The SDR series can collect and store all angle and distance values output from the DT4 data output connector a. The stored data can be verified and printed in the field, then transmitted by cable or modem to an IBM-compatible office data processing system for final computation,

SDR printing and plotting.

7) Interface lF lA for the HP41CV Using this interface, the DT4 can transmit angle and distance data to a HP41CV computer.

The DT4 has two measurement modes and one parameter setting Appendix D. Optional accessories

1) Diagonal eyepiece DE17

( @ Solar The diagonal eyepiece is convenient for Fllter MAO4A) near-vertical observations and in places

where space around the instrument is limited. Remove the telescope eyepiece by un- screwing the mounting ring, and screw in the diagonal eyepiece.

2) Eyepiece prism EP3 The syepiece prism is convenient for steep observations up to 60" from the horizontal, and has an attached solar filter.

3) Solar filter EF2 For observations to the sun, and where glare is present.

4) Circular compass CP8 Mount the CP8 on the standards after removing the carrying handle. Before use,

screw loosen the clamping screw on the under- side of the compass. After use, re-clamp the screw.

5) Target sets TGI and TG2 The TGI and TG2 targets can be mounted

1) Tubular compass CP7 (accuracy t l ") To mount the CP7, slide it into the tubular compass slot @ . To use, loosen the clamping screw to free the compass needle. Turn the instrument in the face left position until the compass needle bisects the index lines. The tele- scope is now aligned with magnetic north. After use, tighten the clamp to fix the compass needle and remove it from the instrument.

2) Plumb bob

Tribrach 4 clamp

If the weather is calm, or for initial tripod centring, the plumb bob can be used for centring. To use, unwind the plumb bob cord and attach it to the hook inside the centring screw. Use the cord grip piece to adjust the cord length.

The DT4 instrument can be removed from the tribrach by rotating the tribrach clamp anticlockwise and carefully lifting the in- strument up.

(The DT4S has a shifting tribrach for quick centring, and the instrument can not be removed.)

4) Handle The carrying handle O can be removed from the instrument by unscrewing the handle securing screw @ and sliding the handle to the side. When replacing the handle, ensure that the securing screw is fully tightened.

7. SETTING UP THE INSTRUMENT

7.1 Centring and levelling

1) Ensure that: a) The tripod head is approximately level,

and over the surveying point. b) The tripod shoes are firmly fixed in the

APPENDICES

Appendix A. Indexing vertical circle by face left, face right readings.

Like all theodolites, the DT4 will have a vertical index error. The vertical index can be determined, and the index error removed, by the following procedure:

1) Carefully level the DT4 and switch the instrument on.

2) Change the instrument parameter 2 to option F1: (See page 38) i.e. Vertical circle FT-7 c,. 3 C indexing by face left. face right readings.

about 30 m.

[G, When the vertical circle has been indexed, the vertical angle is displayed. The horizontal angle should now be

p indexed. Note: The vertical and horizontal circles must be re-indexed each

time the DT4 is switched on. Ensure that the instrument is switched off when moving it to a new location.

The following steps are different for the DT4 and DT4S: DT4:

@ 9) Look through the optical plummet eyepiece. Loosen the centring screw slightly. Carefully slide the instrument over the tripod head until the surveying point is exactly centred in the reticle. Re-tighten the centring screw.

10) Repeat procedures 6)-9) until the instrument is correctly levelled and centred over the surveying point.

DT4S: 9) Turn the tribrach shifting clamp anti-

clockwise. Adjust the instrument position on the tribrach to centre the surveying point. Tighten the shifting clamp to fix the instru- ment in the centre position.

Note: The DT4S shifting tribrach can be ad- justed up to t8mm without moving the base plate.

7.2 Focussing and target sighting

1) Look through the telescope at a bright, featureless background and turn the eye- piece clockwise, then anti-clockwise until just before the reticle image goes out of focus. Using this procedure, frequent reticle re-focussing is not necessary, since your eye is focussed at infinity.

2) Loosen the vertical and horizontal clamps and use the peep sight @ to bring the target into the field of view. Re-tighten both clamps.

3) Turn the focussing ring @ to focus on the target. Use the vertical and horizontal fine motion screws @, @ to sight the target precisely. The last adjustment of each fine motion screw should be in a clockwise direction. Check that there is no parallax between the target image and the reticle.

Parallax: This is the relative displacement of the target image with respect to the reticle when the observer's head is moved slightly before the eyepiece. Parallax will introduce reading errors and must be removed before observations are taken.

Parallax can be removed by re-focussing with the focussing ring.

11.5 Optical plummet

a) Carefully level the DT4 and exactly centre a surveying point in the reticle of the optical plummet.

Note: The selected horizontal angle mode (right or left), 0" position on the horizontal circle and vertical angle mode are stored in the short-term memory after the power is switched OFF. After about 5 hours, all the options return to their default values. This function can be useful when the battery has to be changed during survey work, or in the case of an auto power cut-off, as the horizontal angle index and angle options can be restored at power on.

9.3 Optical distance measurement: Stadia survey Stadia lines

The telescope reticle is provided with stadia lines (two vertical and two horizontal) which can be used to measure the target distance and elevation as follows: Stadia line separation = 1/100 of the focal m, distance.

If the target is off-centre, the following adjustment should be performed:

@Check the adjustment by repeating proce- dures b)-f). Re-adjust if necessary until the display shows a value within 90" k5" for any position of the upper part. Replace the adjustment cover.

1 1.4 Reticle

Note: The adjustments in this section are very delicate. If you experience any difficulties, please contact your SOKKIA agent. Before this procedure, check the vertical index as in 11.3.

11.4.1 Perpendicularity of the reticle to the horizontal axis

a) Carefully level the DT4. Select and sight a clear target on the upper part A of the reticle line.

10. DT4 WITH EDM: ANGLE AND DISTANCE MEASUREMENT

10.1 EDM combinations and mounting

10.1.1 Combinations

1) The DT4 can be operated as a total station when combined with the REDmini2 or RED 2A/L EDM as follows:

1) The mounting procedure for the REDmini2 telescope-mounted system can be found in the REDmini2 operator's manual. (Also see combinations diagram on the previous page.) Only use: REDmini2 counterweight SB131

11.3 Index error of the tilt angle sensor

a) Carefully level the DT4, switch on and index the horizontal and vertical circles. Ensure that parameter 3 is set to option F0 (see page 38). i.e. Automatic vertical com- pensation is available. The ,If symbol is displayed.

ppm values. However, earlier REDmini2 in- struments have a fixed - 30 mm prism constant correction and 0 ppm values. Refer to your REDmini2 Operator's manual for more details. RED2A/L: Check the RED2A/2L prism con- stant switch position. Set the ppm dial. (Refer to the RED2A/L manual for more details)

3) EDM power supplies: REDmini2: Telescope mounted: Connect the external battery BDCIIA or BDC12 to the DT4 external power source connector @ with the cable EDC3.

Or l A Standards mounted: Mount the BDCI 8 battery in the holder. RED2A/L: Mount the BDCI 1 battery in the RED2A/L.

4) Mount the REDmini2 or RED2A/L on the DT4.

5) Connect the EDM to the DT4 with the appropriate cable DOC15 or DOC16.

6) Switch on the DT4.

It is important that the DT4 is periodically checked and adjusted. In addition, the instrument should be checked after transportation, long storage or when damage to the instrument is suspected to have occurred.

11.1 Plate level

The glass tube of the plate level is sensitive to temperature change or shock. Adjust as follows:

a) Turn the upper part of the instrument until the plate level is parallel to a line between levelling foot screws A and B. Centre the plate level bubble using level-
