Due largely to the launch of commercial LTE services in China, but also to a lesser degree in Australia, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, and India, there has been a significant rise in the market share for the major TDD bands – Bands 38 (2600MHz), 39 (1900MHz), and 40 (2300MHz).

Industry expectations are that LTE FDD and TD-LTE will ultimately converge into a single LTE network, and work is ongoing in the standards arena and among device and equipment suppliers to achieve this. A number of operators already hold spectrum in both the FDD and TDD bands, and plan to deploy services using both (see Table).

One possibility being considered is for FDD to provide broader coverage for more general voice and data services, while TD-LTE, with its flexible configuration between the uplink and downlink, would support the higher and more asymmetrical data traffic demands of hotspots, or even small cells. One operator already implementing such a solution is China Mobile Hong Kong, which is using its 20MHz of TD-LTE spectrum in Band 40 for hotspot capacity, while using its FDD spectrum for coverage.

Operator FDD band(s) TDD band(s)

China Telecom Band 3 Band 38, Band 40

China Unicom Band 3 Band 38, Band 40

China Mobile Hong Kong Band 3, Band 7 Band 40

Hutchison HK Band 3, Band 7 Band 40

Optus Band 3, Band 7, Band 28 Band 40

SoftBank Band 1, Band 8 Band 40, Band 41
