In1983,PresidentRonaldReaganwasconcernedabouttheislandnationofGrenada.HefearedGrenada’scommunistneighbor,Cuba,wasusingitslargearmytohelpGrenadabecomeacommunistforceintheCaribbeanSea.InOctober,therelationshipbetweentheU.S.andGrenadabecameextremelytensewhenMauriceBishop,thePrimeMinisterofGrenada,wasassassinated.ThenewrebelGrenadiangovernmentwascontrolledbystrictcommunistleaders.
TheUnitedStateswasthemostpowerfuldemocracyintheworld.PresidentReaganbelieveditwashisdutytoprotectthefreedomofU.S.citizensandpromotefreedomaroundtheworld.Inparticular,PresidentReaganwasconcernedforthesafetyoftheAmericanstudentswhowerelivinginGrenada,attendingSt.George’sMedicalUniversity.HeneededtoevacuatethestudentsbeforetheybecamehostagesorcasualtiesofthecrisisinGrenada.
