This year has started off with a

bang and we couldn’t be happier

for the communities we serve.

It was “all hands on deck” as all

programs of Operation StandUP!

were present for the MLK Day

Volunteers served in every

capacity throughout the day.

From preparing food, serving

meals, to washing the dishes.

All hands on deck” as StandUP!

volunteers take over the kitchen.

We can’t forget to

thank the phenomenal

women who support

My Sister’s Keeper

for providing such

amazing help on the

Day of Service. Many arrived

after a full day of work to

support the youth they mentor

throughout the year.

We were delighted to have the students

from the Cleveland Leadership Acad-

emy arrive for their I Rise Project at the

shelter. The students were so engaged

in the process, many asked about develop-

ing another I Rise project next month!

*A BBBS study showed youth with mentors were less likely to begin using drugs or alcohol during the eighteen-month period of the

study than their peers. Specifi-cally, 6.2 percent of youth with mentors initiated drug use com-pared to 11.4 percent of their peers

without mentors, and 19.4 percent initiated alcohol use compared to 26.7 percent. These findings were more substantial for minority

Leadership Through Service

"I Rise" is our youth development initiative seeking to cultivate the next generation of advocates

through service learning. Youth identify, develop, and implement community projects that empower

their ability to create abiding change.

Congratulations to the youth participants of I Rise for completing Operation Beautification: a mural at 2100Lakeside. From the onset, youth displayed great tenacity and resilience in delivering a most meaningful gift to the residents, visitors, and staff of the City’s largest shelter. The 15x20foot mural included Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise” and a statement of appreciation to many great organizations for their support.

Program Outcomes

National Day of Service 2014

I Rise participated

in a full day of

activities at 2100

Lakeside. Their

day

started

with

an

on-site

Ideation Workshop

where youth were

learned about Culture

and Diversity. This was followed by

youth preparing and serving lunch

to over 400 shelter residents.

OPERATION HYDRATION

During the summer of 2012, I Rise

collected and distributed 3,217

bottles of water to several homeless

shelters, senior living residents, and

inner city youth camps.

.

CARE “PACKAGED”

In 2011, I Rise adopted a senior

living complex in Cleveland’s inner

city. Youth participants collected

items and delivered a 10-item Care

Package to every resident in the

complex. Care Packages were in-

cluded of both personal hygiene

and household items.

I Rise is an initiative of Operation StandUP!

The premise of Operation Beautification is to build relation-ships through cultural enrichment. Employing art to increase interaction among youth who otherwise would not have the opportunity to do so because of distance and differences. Youth from the City's west side and east side will work together to create a visual representation of hope and joy for residents and visitors of 2100 Lakeside Avenue. Ideally, this planned event will result in extemporaneous camaraderie and produce long-lasting relationships among participants. Youth are afforded the opportunity to view one another through a common lens; allowing for the recognition of their similarities and embracing of their differences.

What’s Next for Operation StandUP!

@standUPchange

Operation StandUP! is a social transformation organization endeavoring to coalesce community members to stand up and act on the societal woes plaguing marginalized neighborhoods. Our vision is to create a society that understands and accepts responsibility in meeting the needs of all citizens regardless of race, gender, or economic status. We aspire to create productive citizens dedicated to utilizing their talents to rebuild the City of Cleveland and those that dwell within. Operation StandUP! employs three powerful initiatives to achieve the o b j e c t i v e s o f t h e o r g a n i z a t i o n . Each program, Community Champions; I Rise; My Sisters Keeper, and LIFT is designed to improve the community by directly impacting the lives its residents.

Care Packaged is our hygiene supply

drive where items are collected, pack-

aged, and distributed to marginalized

communities throughout the City.

Campaign Cover Me gathers winter

clothing items that serve as protective

layers during the winter months for

street residents.

Hunger Pains is our meal distribution

initiative. We pass out meals throughout

the year; however, we focus our efforts

on creating meal baskets for the elderly

community during the holiday season.

Youth participants of I Rise are

preparing to beautify yet another

neighborhood by painting an awe

inspiring mural and landscaping a vacant

lot in the City of Cleveland.

My Sister’s Keeper has partnered with

several community organizations to

provide services to our new cohort of

mentees. We are excited to bring out the

best in these young ladies.
