The Boston Beer Company, America’s leading brewer of handcrafted, full-flavored beers like Samuel Adams, recently purchased a custom designed laser system from Matthews Marking Products when the brewer was faced with the challenge of labeling its stainless steel kegs. Previously, a hand applied label was used for government-mandated information, but applying the label required costly labor and materials, and there was the risk of the label detaching from the keg during the keg float cycle. There are strict government regulations requiring affixing of the label. If the brewer is found not to meet these requirements, stiff penalties are applied. Matthews Marking Products’ laser system addressed both challenges by providing a permanent marking solution. The system also laser marked a 2D code that will be part of the asset tracking for kegs in the float cycle, as traceability allows for identifying the kegs in cycle, targeting kegs for maintenance, and locating kegs for product return and product recall.

Matthews Marking Products designed a class 1 laser environment, meaning no laser emissions are permissible outside of the laser system throughout the operation of the equipment. The high definition vision system detects the presence of a 2D code, so unmarked Boston Beer kegs each received a permanent government warning and 2D code.

Matthews Marking Products in Sweden (Matthews Swedot) has relocated to Mölnda, on the outskirts of Göteborg, Sweden.

“Due to the good working relationship with the landlord, we were able to fulfill all of our specific requirements,” said Ulf Simpson, Quality and Purchasing Manager, who was responsible for overseeing the move and is pleased with its success.

In contrast to the previous location, production, administration and construction are now on one level, which promotes better working relations.

“After thirty years in the same building, it is fantastic to move to new premises that have been specifically tailored to our requirements,” said Lars Rosang, Managing Director.

The staff at Matthews Swedot is pleased with the new working environment and feel this is a great start to the 2011 fiscal year.

Matthews Sweden Makes its Move

Another feature of Matthews’ keg marking system is its ability to accept and accumulate “reject” kegs that fail to have plastic caps removed, or do not meet the requirements for filling. Marking Products integrated the vision system, material handling, and laser marking systems as part of the automation controls scheme operated by the touch-screen interface computer. Marking Products provided the durable, stainless steel wash down conveyors and keg stops for the material handling of the system.

Matthews Marking Products’ laser marking station is one example of the many marking and coding solutions Matthews can provide. Marking Products offers total ownership of the application project and

hassle free integration to eliminate the need for multiple vendors.

“Laser marking systems are continuing to solve many application issues in the food and beverage packaging industry,” said Dean Hornsby, Business Development Packaging Manager. “Laser

marking systems provide the benefit of low cost of ownership, and zero consumables, while producing indelible marks. Whether it’s stainless steel kegs or corrugated shipping containers, laser marking systems will dominate as the marking system of choice for these markets.”

Last month the employees of Matthews Cremation spontaneously opened their hearts and their wallets to help those less fortunate. It might not have been the “holiday giving” that is most often done at Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Easter, but it was a time of year when local families were in desperate need of assistance. In previous years, Cremation employees donated toys for the Loaves & Fishes Christmas Toy Drive, but this is the first time they have pulled together to give food to some of these same families. Employees located the largest boxes they could find and filled them to the brim. Thanks to Matthews Cremation employees, these families’ shelves are no longer bare.

The Matthews Cremation Division enjoyed a larger-than-normal presence at NFDA in New Orleans, LA, in October. The week kicked off with a pre-con CANA operator certification class, led by Steve Schaal, North American President, and Rick Thomas, Repair and Service Account Representative. Forty attendees learned the ins and outs of crematory operations and liability issues.

The class also received a bonus session given by California Assemblyman Jeffery Miller, who discussed progress on the latest legislature that will allow alkaline hydrolysis by BIO Cremation be an alternative to traditional flame cremation. California is very close to joining the other three states that currently allow BIO Cremation.

The exhibit hall opened at noon on Monday, October 11, and the Cremation Division was ready, sporting a new booth displaying a selection of top sellers, and featured a working demonstration of the SecurIDy™ Case Tracking Management System. Armed with wristbands and badges, the sales team demonstrated how each

case can be tracked from receipt to return, and how the operators can show accountability for each step along the way.

NFDA 2010 also unveiled the M-Pyre 2.0, an upgrade that will enhance its intuitive logic controls with interactive features allowing for remote trouble-shooting and calibration, report generation and more. The feature will be available beginning January 1, 2011.

Attendees received much feedback at the show Steve Talley, a top equipment salesmen, enjoyed catching up with many former and happy customers. He received many compliments about how professional the booth looked, saying that the Power Pak II façade with the battery lift table and Emerick Cherry Cremation Casket was an eye catcher. In the past, Matthews Cremation shared a booth with other divisions, or had one small display. By far, this was the largest presence at NFDA, and it was quite a success. The division is looking forward to next year’s show in Chicago, IL.

This year, New Orleans hosted the 2010 National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) convention - the death care industry’s premier annual showcase of new products and services. Matthews Funeral Home Products, Cemetery Products and Cremation once again joined forces to demonstrate their strength as the industry’s total solutions provider.

Encompassing 2,800 square feet of exhibit space, the Matthews exhibit combined innovative new concepts with traditional products. Taking center stage was the Remembrance Process™, a groundbreaking new consumer-based program designed to support the value of products and services provided by a funeral home or cemetery regardless of whether cremation or burial is chosen for final disposition. Interested customers were invited to learn more about this program at a series of in-depth presentations. The Remembrance Process generated significant buzz at the convention as many funeral directors were eager to enroll in the new program. Additional information on the Remembrance Process will follow in the next issue of MPressions.

New features of the cutting-edge Matthews IMS program were also unveiled, with many demonstrations held to illustrate its efficiency and ease of use in managing a funeral home’s operations. In

The Cremation Division also highlighted technology with its unique SecurIDy™ system, an innovative bar code-based system for start-to-finish tracking of a body through the cremation process. Advancements in cremator technology and accessories were also displayed. A wide range of urns available in a variety of finishes were presented in a new cabinet. Several new casket designs and Heritage™ Italian and Irish-themed hardwood caskets rounded out the offerings from Funeral Home Products. The Cemetery Products division showcased several bronze statues and granite memorials, plus its popular Lasting Memories line of highly detailed urns and plaques.

Matthews also hosted a customer appreciation reception on the first evening of the convention, drawing many customers who enjoyed local Cajun cuisine, refreshments, and social time.

The 2011 NFDA convention will be held October 23 to 26 in Chicago, IL.

Michael Anthony Kielas, the first director of Memorial Arts, plans to focus his efforts on finding unusual hand-made selections for pet loss. As the former founder of Art Vessels, a company that designed, manufactured and collaborated with artists worldwide, he has been a driving force in bringing art to the industry.

“This will differentiate Matthews from the rest of the distributors who buy from the same vendors that make every urn catalog look the same,” said Michael, who has 35 years experience designing and building furniture for the architectural community.

Recently, his designs were featured on the covers of the Herman-Miller catalog and Metropolitan Home. His “Michael Anthony” trademark is also well-known in boardrooms, banks and skyboxes across America.

Michael balances his creative endeavors with flying small sport planes, sailing and taking care of his numerous pets, including several cats and dogs, and a bird, named Fin.

Matthews Cremation Division is pleased to announce two additions to the sales force– Brian Gamage and Michael Anthony Kielas– who will fill specific niches within the company.

Brian Gamage, the newest equipment consultant, is responsible for sales of new cremation equipment in the human and animal markets, as well as business development in emerging markets for MCD. He has worked in the cremation industry for 22 years and brings a wealth of experience with him.

Originally from Connecticut, Brian now lives in central Florida and will work out of the Apopka facility. He has a variety of interests, but spends much of his free-time engaging in athletic activities, like skiing, soccer, and weight training, woodworking, and riding motorcycles.

Matthews International held their annual company picnic at Kennywood Park, West Mifflin, PA, on Saturday, August 14. More than 1,100 tickets were sold to employees and their families and friends. The weather was hot and humid, but the children seemed to enjoy the balloon artist and visit from Kenny Kangaroo. More than 50 prizes were given, including gift cards for employees, and Tony Chiarelli (Bronze) won the grand prize 40” Samsung plasma television.

Whether it was controlling the cookie table, helping coordinate ticket sales, or verifying bingo winners at the park, you were all an enormous help. Special thanks also goes to Ralph Schwartzmiller for being the master of ceremonies and calling the bingo game and prizes.

Overall, the picnic was a success. The weather was perfect, the food was great, and everyone got a chance to get together and have fun outside of work. Thanks to everyone who came to the picnic.

Jennifer Ciccone, Vice President of Human Resources, was awarded the Pittsburgh Business Times 2010 Human Resources Leadership Award.

The prize patrol surprised her with the achievement at the corporate office, and invited her to a luncheon to honor her success on September 30th at the Fairmont Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh. Jennifer is among 10 award recipients in the Pittsburgh area, and credits her success to the great people at Matthews – her bosses past and present, and the human resources team. Thanks to Jennifer for her excellence and leadership within Matthews and within her profession.

People from across Richmond, VA, came together on September 19 in healing and celebration to dedicate a pedestrian bridge at Forest Hill Park in memory of the Harvey family, who were killed by intruders in their nearby home. The new bridge replaces a temporary crossing built after Hurricanes Isabel (2003) and Gaston (2004) raged through Virginia.

When the product did not meet the clients’ satisfaction, a Matthews’ graphic designer re-touched the original photographic image and reproduced the ImageCast™ plaque. This service prompted the neighborhood group that funded the memorial to write the following letter of gratitude:

“We are grateful for your exceptional service. That service was evident in the sensitivity involved in creating a memorial plaque for the Harvey family. We were extremely impressed when Matthews accommodated our request for revision to the first casting by hand-working part of the image. This drive for excellence, sensitivity to the client’s needs, and respect for our limited funds all reflect the integrity and professionalism that likely pervades Matthews’ philosophy of customer service. Our hope is that

dedicating the bridge in their memory will help heal many emotional wounds, and will encourage families from across the city to enjoy this park, as the Harveys did. This bridge and the marker will be a connecting point for all of us, a beautiful way to remember their brief lives.”

The New York Yankees unveiled a large, bronze, bas-relief monument on September 20 to honor George “The Boss” Steinbrenner, past owner of the New York Yankees baseball team.

Steinbrenner died on July 30 at the age of 80, but will be immortalized at Monument Park by the massive tribute that stands 7’ by 5’ tall (not including the base) and weighs 760 pounds. Many will also remember Steinbrenner as the fast-talking boss on the hit television show Seinfeld.

Following a video tribute, the Steinbrenner family and Yankees team walked out to Monument Park (located behind the center field wall at the new Yankee Stadium), which includes monuments for Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio. Wife Joan Steinbrenner read the following:

“A true visionary who changed the game of baseball forever. He was considered the most influential owner in all of sports. In 37 years as principal owner, the Yankees posted a major league-best .566 winning percentage, while winning 11 American League pennants and seven World Series titles, becoming the most recognizable sports brand in the world.”

Endre Baranchi Tamaska, a former Matthews sculptor, died on June 4, 2010, at the age of 97, in Florida. Among the more famous works sculpted by Tamaska during his tenure at Matthews are the official bust of President Truman, a bust of Queen Elizabeth commissioned for her visit to Canada in 1959, and a bronze bas-relief for the doors of the National Cathedral in Washington, DC.

Prior to joining Matthews, Tamaska was a Hungarian Freedom Fighter during World War II, where he fought against the Russians and the advance of communism to his homeland. Captured and held as a prisoner of war in Siberia from 1944 to 1950, he was one of 2,000 Hungarians among 50,000 captives that survived the Gulag.

The plaque was manufactured by Matthews for US Bronze of New Hyde Park, NY. The Steinbrenner family selected a Matthews Bronze Supra Casket custom painted “Yankee Blue” for the funeral service.

Upon his return to Hungary in 1950s, Tamaska was arrested as an enemy of communism and jailed until 1955. Following his release, Tamaska joined the Hungarian Freedom Fighters during the 1956 revolution to overthrow the Communist Russians. He escaped to Austria after the revolution failed in November 1956, and came to America as a refugee in 1957. He proudly became an American citizen in 1962, and later retired from Matthews in 1978.

Tamaska was one of many Hungarian immigrants hired in the late 1950s by Matthews’ foundry general foreman, Oscar Geisler. Others hired included John Varga, who became Furnace Room Foreman and father of current Matthews’ Pattern Forman John Varga, Alex Nemes and Louis Lindner, both Molders, and Paul Martincsek, a Bronze Foreman. All were hired alongside Tamaska and became longtime Matthews employees.

Quarter Century Club Celebration

Quarter Century Club Celebration

More than 100 members attended the 66th Annual Quarter Century Club dinner

held Friday, October 8, 2010 at the Sheraton Station Square in Pittsburgh. The

event kicked off with day tours at local Matthews’ divisions, including Packaging

Graphics, Bronze, Corporate, and Marking Products.

The recognition banquet began with a social hour, followed by dinner. Joe

Bartolacci, President & CEO, spoke on “Evolution in Europe,” and presented the

awards. Next year’s celebration will be Friday, September 23, 2011.

IDL Worldwide and its Latin America Team helped Apple Computer, one of its largest clients, launch the iPad device for the first time in Latin America in April 2010.

Since the iPad launch in Latin America was kept secret from the public and media until the week before the device went on sale, Apple and the IDL team communicated the project with code names. “Operation Descending Dragon: aka Project Halong Bay” was chosen for symbolic reasons. According to local legend, when the Vietnamese fought Chinese invaders, the gods sent a family of dragons to help defend the land. The dragons began spitting out jewels and jade, which turned into the islands and islets dotting Halong Bay linking together and forming a great wall against the invaders. IDL and Apple agreed the operation name was appropriate.

Phase 1 of the launch outfitted more than 150 retailers in Mexico with the iPad demonstration, which became one of the biggest challenges the IDL team and in-country partner Vigo Vision in Monterrey, Mexico, had ever faced. Apple retailers spread over four major cities were launching simultaneously and required a number of elements to be installed the night before the iPads went on sale, including graphics, iPad demonstration units and large store banners. For three months prior, the IDL team worked night and day producing graphics, training installation teams and performing site audits to prepare for the Mexico launch. Since installations could only occur after store hours, no time was left to waste on July 22 when installers entered store locations and executed an overnight operation in less than 14 hours. When the retailers opened their doors on July 23, the stores had been transformed into an iPad showcase.

One month later, IDL participated in Phase 2 of the iPad launch in South America, and was responsible for transforming more than 250 retailers spanning across Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador. Utilizing IDL’s network of in-country partners, Phase 2 was executed as quickly as it began, but was also kept a secret from the media and public until the week before execution. All movements and communication involving each country took place in confidentiality and secret.

IDL is currently engaged in other projects for Apple in Latin America showcasing IDL’s reach and bandwidth in Mexico, Central America and South America to more high profile clients. Thanks to Conor Killeen and the Apple Team for helping keep these large, challenging projects under wraps and driving IDL and Apple to very successful product launches.
