Before using for the first timeBefore using for the first time pleasenote the following points:

Setting the water softener.

The water softener must be set to corre-spond to the water hardness in yourarea. This can be obtained from yourlocal water company, or by using a testkit that can be purchased from theMiele Parts Department.

The salt reservoir must only be filledwith water and salt. Never fill it withdetergent.

Adding rinse aid.

Inadvertently filling the rinse aidreservoir with liquid or powder deter-gent will damage the reservoir.

Only use detergents and rinse aids for-mulated for domestic dishwashers.

It is important to choose the correctprogram.

Different wash programs should be se-lected for different loads and differentdegrees of soiling. See the programchart for further program descriptions.

When the dishwasher is run for thefirst time, the selected program willnot start for approximately 7minutes. During these 7 minutes, the Watersoftener reactivation program is run,and the “Softener” indicator lampwill be on.

Add the correct amount of detergent.

Follow the detergent manufacturer’srecommendations on how much deter-gent to use. Not enough or too muchdetergent can lead to poor wash re-sults.

Cleaning results vary from brand tobrand. If you are not satisfied with theresults from one brand, try anotherquality brand before contacting theMiele Service Department for advice.

Load the dishes correctly.

Load the dishes so that water can con-tact all surfaces. Ensure that the sprayarms are not blocked by items whichare too tall for the basket or which ex-tend through the bottom of the basket. If necessary, manually rotate the sprayarms to test for clearance.

The combination filter in the base ofthe wash cabinet and the spray armsmust be kept clean.

These should be regularly inspectedand cleaned if necessary.

See the corresponding chapters for de-tailed information on the above points.

Water softenerThe water softener must be set to corre-spond to the water hardness in yourarea. This can be obtained from yourlocal water company, or by using a testkit that can be purchased from theMiele Parts Department.

To avoid the build up of calcium de-posits on dishes, cutlery, and in thedishwasher, if the water hardness isabove 4 gr/gal, the water should besoftened.

The dishwasher is factory set for a hard-ness level of 22 gr/gal. If your water isharder or softer, the setting will need tobe adjusted.

To ensure a steady supply of soft-ened water, the built in water sof-tener must be:

1. Correctly set.

2. Reactivated with salt when depleted.

Where the water hardness fluctuates (e.g. 8 - 17 gr/gal) always set the ma-chine to the higher value (17 gr/gal inthis example).

Filling the salt reservoir.

The salt reservoir should be filled be-fore the first use and when the “Salt” in-dicator lamp lights up. Use water sof-tener reactivation salt (1 - 4 mm grainsize), as other salts may contain inso-luble additives which can impair thefunctioning of the softener.

The salt reservoir holds approx. 4 lbs (2 kg) of salt.

Inadvertently filling the salt reservoirwith dishwashing detergent willdamage the water softener. Makesure that only water softener reacti-vation salt of the proper grain size isused.

Remove the lower basket.

Unscrew and remove the salt reser-voir cap.

Before filling the salt reservoir forthe first time:Fill the salt reservoir with approxi-mately 2 quarts (2 l) of water.

Place the funnel (provided) over thesalt reservoir.

Carefully fill with salt. As it is filled, water will run out.

Clean any excess salt from thethreads of the reservoir opening.

Screw the cap on firmly.

If the dishwasher will not be used im-mediately after reactivation, run theRINSE & HOLD program. This willremove any traces of salt from thecabinet.

Loading the dishwasherLoad the dishes so that water cancontact all surfaces.

Do not place dishes and cutlery in-side other pieces where they may beconcealed.

Hollow items such as cups andglasses should be inverted andplaced in the upper basket.

Concave based items should beplaced at an angle on top of the cof-fee bar, (see page 21),so that watercan run off them freely.

Tall, narrow, hollow pieces should beplaced in the center of the basket, rather than in the corners, to ensurewater coverage.

Small cups and glasses should beplaced on the cup racks. Taller mugsand glasses can be placed under-neath the rack.

Do not cover the funnel in the middleof the upper basket.

The spray arms must not be blockedby items which are too tall or hangthrough the baskets. If in doubt, testfor free movement by manually rotat-ing the spray arms.

Some food items may contain naturaldyes that can discolor plastic itemsin the dishwasher ( e.g. carrots, to-matoes, ketchup, etc.). The stabilityof plastic items is not affected by thisdiscoloration.

Some loading examples are shown onthe following pages.

NoteIf the additional feature “Top Solo” hasbeen selected with a wash program, allitems must be loaded into the upperbasket and cutlery tray. See the “Addi-tional features” section for further infor-mation.

In areas where the water has highmineral content, it may be necess-ary to polish silverware after wash-ing to achive a high shine.

For small, lightweight, or delicate itemssuch as cups, saucers, glasses, des-sert bowls, etc.

Bottom basket.

For larger and heavier items such asplates, serving platters and saucepans.Glasses should only be placed in thebottom basket if the special glasswareinsert is used.

Cutlery tray.

The easily loaded cutlery tray ensuresthorough cleaning of cutlery and cook-ing utensils. In addition, the cutlery trayinsert is removable and can be carriedto a drawer or table for easy loading orunloading, thereby eliminating much ofthe handling of the cutlery.

The plate inserts on the left and rightrear of the lower basket are removable. To remove, push the handles of both in-serts toward the inside of the basket.Once removed, the open area can ac-commodate large pots, casseroledishes, or accessory inserts (see “Ac-cessories”).

To make unloading easier, cutlery canbe grouped in zones, one for knives, one for forks, etc.

Spoon heads should be placed so thatwater can run off them freely.

Place the heads of cutlery with roundor oval handles in the holders. This willsecure them during the wash cycle.

Ensure that spoon heads are in contactwith at least one holder so they cannotflip over and collect water.

Do not cover the opening in themiddle of the cutlery tray, and makesure that the upper spray arm canrotate freely after the tray is slid in;otherwise the rotation of the sprayarms may be inadequate for a thorough cleaning.

Adjustable cup racks.

To make room for tall glasses, raise therack upwards. Lower it to double stacksmaller items.

Coffee bar.

Place coffee mugs on top of the bar sothat they sit at a slant. This allows allwater to run off the base of the mug.The bar can also be used as a separ-ator between two rows of glasses keep-ing them from leaning against eachother. This protects the glasses and en-sures good wash results. For wideitems, flip the bar over to the right.

Items not suitable for dishwashers– Cutlery with wooden handles.

– Wooden cutting boards.

– Glued items such as old knives withhandles that are glued togetheraround the shank of the blade.

– Hand made craft items.

– Copper or tin items.

– Plastic items which are not heat resis-tant.

Please note:

– Silver or aluminum items may suffersome discoloration.

– Aluminum parts (eg. oven hoodgrease filters) should not be cleanedusing commercial or industrial deter-gents. These high alkaline deter-gents may damage the machine, and in extreme instances, cause ex-plosive chemical reactions.

– Silverware previously cleaned with asilver polish may be damp orspotted at the end of a programwhere water has adhered to the pol-ish. This can be rubbed off with asoft, dry cloth. Silver that has pre-viously been cleaned in an immer-sion dip is usually dry at the end of aprogram, but may discolor (tarnish).

– Colors on dishware that have beenpainted over the glaze may fadeover time.

– Clouding may occur on glasses afterfrequent washing.

Miele recommends:

Wash delicate glassware using theECONOMY program or the CHINA &CRYSTAL program with a tempera-ture of 45 °C/115 °F (if so equipped). This will reduce the risk of clouding.

Press the latch on the detergent dis-penser. The cover will spring open.

Fill the dispenser using the amountof detergent recommended by thedetergent manufacturer.

Close the cover. The cover will al-ways be open at the end of a washprogram (excluding the RINSE &HOLD program).

Generally, filling the dispenser withdetergent will be sufficient to ensurethorough cleaning. If dishes are extradirty, or if the soil has been allowed todry on the dishes before washing, aprogram utilizing a prewash cycleshould be selected. In this case, extradetergent can be added to the smallcompartment labeled ( I ) in the centerof the dispenser.

Dishwasher detergents contain irri-tant and corrosive ingredients. Theycan cause burns in the mouth andthroat if swallowed, or inhibit brea-thing. Keep children away fromdetergent and from the dishwasherwhen the door is open.

To avoid the danger of children com-ing into contact with dishwasherdetergent, only fill the detergent dis-penser immediately before startingthe program.

Capacities:Compartment I (prewash) takes a maxi-mum of 1 ounce (25 ml) and Compart-ment II (main wash) takes a maximumof 3 ounces (80 ml) when completelyfilled. There are horizontal marks to as-sist you in filling Compartment II. Themarks indicate a level of approximately3/4, 1, and 1 1/4 ounces (20, 25 and30 ml respectively).

Choosing a programThe wash program chosen should de-pend on the type of dishes and the de-gree of soiling.

In most cases a NORMAL program willgive excellent results.

The available programs and some oftheir applications are listed in the Pro-gram Chart on the next two pages.

“ENERGY SAVER” Program.

Use this program for lightly to nor-mally soiled dishware.

A warm water intake (temperature ofthe incoming water) of at least45 °C/115 °F is necessary for thisprogram.

Water is not heated in this program.Only 0,20 kWh of electricity (approx.) isused during this cycle.

The drying result may not match that ofa program with a full drying cycle.

The higher the temperature of the in-take water, the better the drying results.

Open the door of the dishwasher 2-3 inches (5-6 mm) at the end of theprogram to speed the drying pro-cess.

Dishwasher installationThe “i” model dishwasher is speciallydesigned for installation under a con-tinuous countertop.

A panel can be custom made for instal-lation on the front of the dishwasher, as-suring a perfect match with the kitchencabinetry.

If a standard non-cabinet matchingdishwasher installation is desired, the“i” model dishwasher can be convertedinto a “U” model through the addition ofa GDU 60/65 decor set. The decor setcomes supplied with separate installa-tion instructions.

To ensure stability, these dish-washers should only be installedunder a continuous countertopwhich is securely fastened to thecabinet base units.

Dimensions:

1) with 35" (890 mm) machine height2) with 33 1/8" (840 mm) machine height

Range of adjustment is approximately2" (5 cm).

1. Install the steam deflector, (if applicable).

A stainless steel plate is supplied toprotect the underside of the countertopagainst steam rising from the dish-washer when the door is opened. If thecountertop is made of Corian®, gra-nite, marble or other solid, waterproofmaterial, the steam deflector should notbe used.

Squeeze a bead of sealant from thesupplied tube into the angle formedby the curved edge b of the cover-plate.

Align the plate c with the lower frontedge of the countertop (see illustra-tion) and use the supplied tacks tonail it into place.

On countertops with wood or lami-nate edging, the tacks should benailed through the rear holes of theplate.

2. Install the dishwasher under the countertop.

It is preferable to install the main waterand electric supplies so that they canbe accessed through an adjacentcabinet, rather than situating them be-hind the machine. See the “Plumbing”and “Electrical” sections for proper con-nection procedures before continuing.

Certain steps in the installation proce-dures require that the dishwasher bepulled out of its opening. For this rea-son, perform the plumbing and electri-cal connections after the machine hasbeen levelled and the front panel hasbeen mounted.

Install the slides.

Two slides are included and should beinstalled on the feet of the dishwasherbefore the machine is pushed underthe countertop. This will allow the ma-chine to slide easier, protect the floor, and allow adjustment of the rear level-ing legs from the front of the machine.

Place the slides, with the ratchet atthe rear, onto the dishwasher legs.

Unscrew the legs to raise the ma-chine to within 1/4" (5 mm) of theunderside of the countertop, andcheck that the machine is level, before sliding it into its opening.

Push the machine into the opening, making sure the electrical cable andhoses can reach their connectionpoints without being kinked.

6. Adjusting the door springs. The door springs are adjusted correctlywhen a half opened door remains inthat position when released.

If the door drops down, the springsneed to be tightened. If the door closes, the springs need tobe loosened.

The adjusting screw is located in theupper front strip, on the left hand sideof the dishwasher.

Open the dishwasher door.

Adjust the door springs to the cor-rect balance:– turn clockwise to tightened– turn counterclockwise to loosen.

7.Securing the dishwasher to the countertop.

To ensure the stability of the dish-washer, it must be attached to thecountertop after it has been positioned.

Open the dishwasher door.

Using the screws provided, fastenthe dishwasher to the countertopthrough the two holes located on theupper rim.

The weight of the machine must besupported by the legs, not thecountertop fastening screws. If securing the top takes the weightoff of the legs, extend the legs further until they are tight againstthe floor.

Do not drill any additional holesthrough any portion of the washcabinet. If in doubt about how to se-cure the dishwasher, please call theMiele Service Department.

Pull the dishwasher out from underthe countertop about 4" (10 cm).

Position the securing bracket.

Push the dishwasher back into theopening, and secure it through thehole in the bracket.

For Corian® or granite countertops, fasten the dishwasher to the adjacentcabinets as follows:

For openings greater than 23 5/8"(60 cm) wide:

Pull the dishwasher 4" (10 cm) out ofits opening.

Insert the tab of each optional mount-ing bracket into the guide hole ontop of the dishwasher, and thenswing it to the right or left as re-quired.

Push the dishwasher back into its open-ing, align and fasten it to the adjacentcabinets using 2 screws for eachbracket.

For openings 23 5/8" (60 cm) wide:

Open the dishwasher door andremove the caps covering the mount-ing holes on the outer edge of thewash chamber.

Fasten the dishwasher to the ad-jacent cabinets using the suppliedscrews and bushings. Make sure abushing is placed over the screw be-fore inserting it into its mounting hole.

Tighten the screws and replace thecaps.

The side mounting holes shouldonly be used for securing thedishwasher if the opening is23 5/8" (60 cm) wide. Use of thismethod on larger openings willdamage the machine and causeleaks.

8. Installing the toekick. For kitchens utilizing one continuoustoekick

To prevent damaging the frontpanel, and before installing the toe-kick, measurements must be takento ensure that the toekick will not in-terfere with the complete opening ofthe dishwasher door.

The panel overhang (P), and toekickdepth of recess (R), determine the maxi-mum dishwasher toekick height (H).

If the panel contacts the toekick whilethe dishwasher door is being opened, the dishwasher toekick must be cutshorter or recessed deeper.

If (H) is equal to or less than the toekickheight of the adjoining cabinetry, no in-terference will exist, provided that (R) isat least 3/4".

Note: If a decorative or flush mount toe-kick is desired, and (R) is less than3/4", other modifications, such as beve-ling the top rear edge of the toekick, may be adequate.

For kitchens utilizing a non-continuoustoekick

The included toekick will fit withoutmodification when:– The machine is set to its maximum

height (legs fully extended), and– the toekick is recessed as far as

possible (4 ").

If the machine height is less than maxi-mum, or if the toekick is recessed lessthan 4 ", the toekick must be shortened(see following page).

After installation, carefully open thedishwasher door to check that thefront panel does not hit the toekick. If it does, remove the toekick and trimit accordingly.

Adjusting the toekick recess.

To adjust the depth (recess) of thetoekick, release the tension on thespring clips as shown, and push themounting brackets in as far aspossible.

Trimming the toeckick

The rear of the toekick has two cuttinglines.

Screw the toekick onto the installedbrackets, with the cutting lines to-wards the top, and pull out evenlyuntil it aligns with the toekick of theadjoining cabinets.

The toekick cannot be pushed backin. It must be unscrewed, so that thetension on the spring clips can be released. The brackets can then bepushed in, and the toekick re-attached.

Carefully open the dishwasher dooruntil it hits the toekick.

Using the front lower edge of thedoor panel as a guide, draw a lineacross the toekick.

Unscrew and remove the toekick.

If one of the cutting lines is close tothe line just drawn, score the front ofthe toekick, and snap off the excess,or, trim the toekick along the lineusing a saw.

Screw the toekick back onto thebrackets, with the cut edge at thebottom.

If the dishwasher door does not opencompletely, the toekick may need fur-ther trimming.

PlumbingIt is the responsibility and obligationof the customer to ensure that theelectrical and plumbing installationis carried out by a qualified installerin compliance with national andlocal codes and ordinances.

All dishwashers that carry the followingblue and white sticker are designed toshut off the water and drain the washchamber in the rare event of an internalwater valve failure. In order for this function to be active, the door must be shut, the machinemust be “ON”, and the Program knobmust be in the “STOP” position.

Hot water supply specifications:

Recommended temperature: 120°F(49°C)

Maximum temperature: 140°F (60°C)

Water pressure: 14.5 - 145 psi (0.3 - 10 bar)

An air gap is built into the water inletsystem to prevent potable water mixingwith waste water.

Hot water connection.

New plumbing:

The water inlet hose comes equippedwith a 3/4" female hose thread connec-tor. This can be directly connected to ashut off valve with 3/4" male hosethread ends. It is preferable that the hose assem-bly be installed vertically so the hoseexits from the bottom of the valvebox. If this is not possible, it can be installedhoizontally, provided the hose exit re-mains beneath the main body of thebox (see illustration). (The “lightningbolt” should be above the “arrow” whenthe installation is complete). The valvebox should also be installed so that it isat least 8" (24 cm) above the floor (orbase of the cabinet), and so the excesscoiled hose will remain lower than thebox at all points.

A 2" x 4" (60 x 115 mm) cutout in eitherthe side or bottom of the cabinet adjoin-ing the dishwasher is necessary if thevalve box needs to be passed through.

The water pressure must be between4.5 and 145 psi (0.3 and 10 bar). If the water pressure is too low the ma-chine may not take in enough water inthe alloted time and the “Water Intake” in-dicator lamp will flash. If this occurs, thewater intake time can be increased (see“Problem solving guide”). If the water pressure is too high, a press-ure reducer must be installed.

Existing plumbing:

If the standard 3/8" copper plumbing fora dishwasher already exists with a com-pression fitting and valve as pictured:

Cut the 3/8" copper tubing after thevalve.Install the 3/8" compression to 3/4"MHT (Male Hose Thread) adapter(supplied with the machine), as illus-trated.Connect the inlet hose to the existingvalve/adapter assembly.

Electrical wiring and componentsshould not come into contact withany plumbing fixtures or hoses.

Do not, under any circumstances, cut the intake hose. If the hose iscut, the dishwasher will not work, you will have a water leak and youcould be injured. If the hose is toolong, coil it neatly and place it be-hind the machine.

Drain system specifications:

The machine comes equipped with:

– A 5 ft. long (1.5 m) flexible drainhose with an internal diameter of 7/8"(22 mm).

– A built-in swivel connector whichallows the drain hose to be routed inany direction.

– A built in non-return valve on the dis-charge side to prevent waste waterfrom flowing back into the dish-washer.

– A built-in odor trap on the dischargeside to prevent odors from enteringthe kitchen.

Maximum drain height: 3 ft (1 m)

Maximum drain hose length: 12 ft (3.5 m)

Do not shorten the drain hose.

Electrical wiring and componentsshould not come into contact withany plumbing fixtures or hoses.

IMPORTANT:The dishwasher should be con-nected directly to the drain line.

Drain connection:

D = 24 " (60 cm) (nominal)

Connect the supplied drain hose to thedrain pipe of the kitchen sink either:

A - above the trap using the clamp pro-vided, or

B - to the dishwasher connector of thegarbage disposal.

When connecting the drain hose tothe garbage disposal, make sure toremove the knockout from the con-nection nipple. (See disposal manu-facturers instructions for this proce-dure.)

A sample of a correct water and draininstallation of a dishwasher is shown.

A hose that attaches to a sink spraycan burst if it is installed on thesame water line as the dishwasher. If your sink has one, it is recom-mended that the hose be discon-nected and the hole plugged.

Venting the drainage system

Only if the dishwasher drain hose isconnected to a floor drain or to adrain pipe that is below the level ofthe lower baskets wheels, the drainmust be vented; otherwise the water in-side of the dishwasher may siphon outduring the course of a wash program.

Vent the drain:

Open the dishwasher door.

Cut off the vent cap located at theright rear of the dishwasher, behindthe filters, as illustrated

Additional note.

Since all Miele dishwashers areequipped with an odor trap and non-re-turn valve, the drain hose can be con-nected directly to the drain pipe as illus-trated.

If plumbing codes require an externalair gap on the discharge side of thedishwasher, the following requirementsmust be met:

– No part of the drain hose should behigher than 39" (1 mm).

– If installed horizontally, the drainhose can be up to 12 ft. (3.5 m) long.If the drain hose is angled upwardsin any way, it cannot be longer than5 ft. (1.5 m).

– The drain connection should bemade as close as possible to thedishwasher.

– The internal diameter (7/8" or 22 mm)of the drain hose should not be re-duced at any point.
