1. Read and understand the entire owners manual before attempting assembly or operation. 2. Read and understand the warnings posted on the machine and in this manual. Failure to comply

with all of these warnings may cause serious injury. 3. Replace the warning labels if they become obscured or removed. 4. This planer is designed and intended for use by properly trained and experienced personnel only.

If you are not familiar with the proper and safe operation of a planer, do not use until proper training and knowledge have been obtained.

5. Do not use this machine for other than its intended use. If used for other purposes, WMH Tool Group disclaims any real or implied warranty and holds itself harmless from any injury that may result from that use.

6. Always wear approved safety glasses/face shields while using this machine. Everyday eyeglasses only have impact resistant lenses; they are not safety glasses.

7. Before operating this machine, remove tie, rings, watches and other jewelry, and roll sleeves up past the elbows. Remove all loose clothing and confine long hair. Non-slip footwear is recommended.

8. Wear ear protectors (plugs or muffs) during extended periods of operation. 9. This planer is to be used with wood and wood products only. 10. Some dust created by power sanding, sawing, grinding, drilling and other construction activities

contain chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these chemicals are: • Lead from lead based paint. • Crystalline silica from bricks, cement and other masonry products. • Arsenic and chromium from chemically treated lumber. Your risk of exposure varies, depending on how often you do this type of work. To reduce your exposure to these chemicals: work in a well-ventilated area and work with approved safety equipment, such as face or dust masks that are specifically designed to filter out microscopic particles.

11. Do not operate this planer while tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or any medication. 12. Make certain the switch is in the OFF position before connecting the machine to the power

supply. 13. Check the material for loose knots, nails and other defects that can damage knives and pose a

safety hazard for the operator. 14. Always feed stock against the rotation of the drum. 15. Do not plane pieces of material that are too small to be safely supported. 16. When you plane a large piece, provide additional support at table height. 17. Make certain the machine is properly grounded. 18. Make all machine adjustments or maintenance with the machine unplugged from the power

source. 19. Remove adjusting keys and wrenches. Form a habit of checking to see that keys and adjusting

wrenches are removed from the machine before turning it on. 20. Keep machine guards in place at all times when the machine is in use. If removed for

maintenance purposes, use extreme caution and replace the guards immediately. 21. Make sure the planer is firmly secured to the stand or bench before use. 22. Check damaged parts. Before further use of the machine, a guard or other part that is damaged

should be carefully checked to determine that it will operate properly and perform its intended function – check for alignment of moving parts, binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, mounting, and any other conditions that may affect its operation. A guard or other part that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced.

23. Provide for adequate space surrounding work area and non-glare, overhead lighting. 24. Keep the floor around the machine clean and free of scrap material, oil and grease. 25. Keep visitors a safe distance from the work area. Keep children away. 26. Make your workshop child proof with padlocks, master switches or by removing starter keys. 27. Give your work undivided attention. Looking around, carrying on a conversation and “horse-play”

are careless acts that can result in serious injury.

28. Place the machine so that the potential kickback area is not in line with aisles, doorways, wash stations or other work areas.

29. Stand to one side of the infeed and make sure no one else is standing inline with the infeed while feeding into the machine. This planer operates at high speed and should a part slip, it will exit the machine at a high rate of speed and may result in injuries to anyone standing directly in front of the infeed. Maintain a balanced stance at all times so that you do not fall or lean against the knives or other moving parts. Do not overreach or use excessive force to perform any machine operation.

30. Use the right tool. Don’t force a tool or attachment to do a job for which it was not designed. The right tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.

31. Use recommended accessories; improper accessories may be hazardous. 32. Maintain tools with care. Keep knives sharp and free of rust and pitch for the best and safest

performance. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories. 33. Make sure the gib screws are tightened securely. 34. Never brush away wood chips while the machine is running. Use the correct speed and feed for

the tool. Be sure that the tool is the correct one for your operation. 35. Never stand on a machine. Serious injury could occur if the machine tipped or if the planer knives

are unintentionally contacted. 36. Never leave the machine running unattended. Turn the power off and don’t leave the machine

until it comes to a complete stop. 37. All doors should be closed, all panels replaced and other safety guards should be in place before

the machine is started or operated. 38. Keep your hands clear when feeding parts onto the planer. The part will be forced down as it

begins to feed into the machine, causing a pinching action between the part and the table. Use caution! Hands should be clear of the stock and the table to avoid pinching. Never reach into a running machine. Turn off the electrical power and stop the machine before attempting to retrieve parts from within it. Keep your hands away from the planer area. Contact with internal moving parts can result in the loss or injury to fingers, hands and arms.

Introduction This manual is provided by JET covering the safe operation and maintenance procedures for a Model JWP-13DX 13” Thickness Planer. This manual contains instructions on installation, safety precautions, general operating procedures, maintenance instructions and parts breakdown. This machine has been designed and constructed to provide years of trouble free operation if used in accordance to instructions set forth in this manual. Description The JET 13” Planer finishes rough-cut lumber to size and planes soft and hard woods up to 6” thick 13” wide. The wood feeds into a two-blade cutterhead by rubber infeed/outfeed rollers. Sturdy base construction and four-post design permits smooth feeding and virtually snipeless planning. The planer comes with an enclosed, universal ball bearing, 2HP motor with overload protection. The motor has an on/off switch with a removable key to prevent an accidental startup. The unit features a rollercase lock for uniform thickness, depth-of-cut gauge for convenient setup, workpiece thickness preset gauge with six settings for consistent setup, easy hands-free replacement of blades for safety and minimized downtime, top mounted rollers for workpiece return, built-in carrying handles, cord wraps for portability and folding infeed/outfeed rollers for smooth operation. The planer takes cuts up to 1/8” per pass at 26 feet per minute. The inch height scale has graduations in 1/16” increments, and the metric height scale has graduations in 1mm increments. Grounding Instructions

This tool must be grounded while in use to protect the operator from electric shock.

In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding provides a path of least resistance for electric current to reduce the risk of electric shock. This tool is equipped with an electric cord having an equipment-grounding conductor and a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into a matching outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and ordinances. Do not modify the plug provided. If it will not fit the outlet, have the proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician. Improper connection of the equipment-grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock. The conductor, with insulation having an outer surface that is green with or without yellow stripes, is the equipment-grounding conductor. If repair or replacement of the electric cord or plug is necessary, do not connect the equipment-grounding conductor to a live terminal. Check with a qualified electrician or service personnel if the grounding instructions are not completely understood, or if in doubt as to whether the tool is properly grounded. Use only three wire extension cords that have three-prong grounding plugs and three-pole receptacles that accept the tool’s plug. Repair or replace a damaged or worn cord immediately. 115 Volt Operation As received from the factory, your planer is ready to run at 115-volt operation. This planer, when wired for 115 volts, is intended for use on a circuit that has an outlet and a plug that looks the one illustrated in Figure A. A temporary adapter, which looks like the adapter as illustrated in Figure B, may be used to connect this plug to a two-pole receptacle, as shown in Figure B if a properly grounded outlet is not available. The temporary adapter should only be used until a properly grounded outlet can be installed by a qualified electrician. This adapter is not applicable in Canada. The green colored rigid ear, lug, or tab, extending from the adapter, must be connected to a permanent ground such as a properly grounded outlet box, as shown in Figure B.

The use of an extension cord is not recommended. However, if you must use one make sure your extension cord is in good condition. Be sure to use one heavy enough to carry the current your machine will draw. An undersized cord will cause a drop in the line voltage resulting in power loss and overheating. The following table shows the correct size to use depending on the cord length needed and the nameplate ampere rating. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. Remember, the smaller the gauge number, the heavier the cord.

Unpacking

1. Remove all the contents from the shipping carton.

2. Report any damage to your distributor.

3. Do not discard any shipping material

until the planer has been assembled and is running properly.

Assembly and Setup

Do not attempt assembly if any parts are missing. Use this manual to order replacement parts.

Install the Handle

1. The handle assembly with the knob (Figure 1, Item A) can be installed on either the top-right or the top-left side of the planer.

2. Remove the plug from the elevation

screw (Figure 1, Item B) on the side where the handle will be installed.

3. Insert the handle assembly (Figure 1,

Item A) onto the elevation screw top (Figure 1, Item B).

4. Using the washer and bolt supplied

(Figure 2, Item C), install the pointer (Figure 2, Item D) and the handle assembly (Figure 2, Item E) with the wrench provided (Figure 2, Item F).

Unwrap the Power Cord

1. The power cord (Figure 3, Item A) is securely wrapped around the cord wraps (Figure 3, Item B) on the rear of the planer.

2. Pull the power cord to release the cord

clamp and unwrap the power cord. Protective Coating

1. Remove the plastic protective coating (Figure 3, Item C) from the planer bed.

Install the Magnets and Wrench

1. The magnets (Figure 4, Item D) and the wrench (Figure 4, Item E) are installed on the tool tray (Figure 4, Item F) on the rear of the planer.

2. Press the T-wrench into the slot in the

tool tray.

3. Press the magnets into the holes in the tool tray.

Mount the Planer to the Work Surface The planer is designed to be portable so it can be moved to the job site, but should be mounted to a stable, level bench or worktable.

1. The base of the planer has four mounting holes (Figure 5, Item G). The holes form a rectangle 12” x 20”. Use a square to mark the position on the work surface.

2. If pre-drilled holes do not exist on the

work surface, drill four holes to form a 12” x 20” rectangle.

3. Securely mount the planer to the work

surface by bolting it through the holes.

Installation Power Source

Do not connect the planer to the power source until all of the assembly steps have been completed.

The motor is designed to be operated with the voltage and frequency specified. Normal loads will be handled safely on voltages not more than 10% above or below the specified voltage. Running the unit on voltages that are not within this range may cause overheating and motor burnout. Heavy loads require that the voltage at the motor terminals at least equals the voltage specified on the nameplate.

• Power supply to the motor is controlled by a switch with a key. Removing the key from the switch will lock the unit and prevent unauthorized use.

Grounding Instructions

The improper connection of the equipment-grounding conductor can result in the risk of electrical shock. Equipment should be grounded while in use to protect the operator from electric shock.

• See Grounding Instructions in this manual.

Do not permit your fingers to touch the terminals of the plug when installing or removing it from the outlet.

Operating Controls

Before powering up the unit, make sure all of the tools used to assemble and adjust the unit are removed and accounted for. Make sure your hands, loose clothing and any other items that may get caught are safely away from the unit.

On/Off Switch The On/Off Switch (Figure 6, Item A) is located on the front of the planer motor. To turn the planer on, move the switch to the up position. To turn the planer off, move the switch to the down position. Switch Lock The planer can be locked from unauthorized use by locking the switch. To lock the switch:

1. Turn the switch to the off position and disconnect the planer from the power source.

2. Pull the key (Figure 7, Item B) out. The

switch cannot be turned on with the key removed.

Should the key be removed from the switch in the on position, the switch can be turned off but cannot be turned back on.

3. To replace the key, slide the key into the

slot on the switch until it snaps. Circuit Breaker

The planer is equipped with a motor protective device (circuit breaker). The breaker will automatically shut the planer off when excessive current is consumed.

If the breaker is tripped, turn the planer off and reset the circuit breaker by pressing the button (Figure 7, Item C). Be sure to turn the planer off before resetting the circuit breaker to avoid unintentionally starting the planer

Raising and Lowering the Rollercase The rollercase (Figure 8, Item A) contains the motor, cutterhead and chip deflector. The depth of cut is controlled by raising or lowering the rollercase. Rotate the handle (Figure 8, Item B) to raise or lower the rollercase.

One complete rotation of the handle will raise or lower the rollercase by 1/16”.

A rotational direction label with depth indicator is provided on both sides of the planer top. The English/Metric scale (Figure 8, Item C) with pointer allows easy adjustment of rollercase height. Depth-Of-Cut Gauge A spring-loaded depth-of-cut gauge (Figure 8, Item D) is attached to the front of the rollercase. The pointer on the depth-of-cut gauge accurately displays the rollercase height setup when the workpiece is positioned below the gauge. Cranking the handle moves the rollercase down and the pointer shows increased depth-of-cut up to 1/8”. Recommended Maximum Depth-Of-Cut: Hard/Softwood up to 5-1/2” wide ............... 1/8” Hard/Softwood 5-1/2 – 13” wide ................ 1/16”

A 1/8” depth-of-cut on hard/softwood 5-1/2 – 13” wide can be made. However, continuous operation at this setup can cause premature motor failure.

Workpiece Thickness Preset Gauge A six-position workpiece thickness preset gauge (Figure 9, Item E) is mounted on the rollercase. This gauge allows you to preset the desired finished workpiece thickness that the planer will produce. Six settings are provided: 1/8”, 3/8”, 1/2”, 3/4”, 1” and 1-1/4”. Example: Plane a 2” thick workpiece to 1-1/4”.

1. Raise or lower the rollercase until it is just above the workpiece.

2. Position the workpiece on the planer

table below the rollercase.

3. Depress the preset depth gauge and rotate it until the 1-1/4” is positioned on the front and facing you.

4. Release the gauge.

5. The planer is now set to stop the

rollercase when the workpiece thickness reaches 1-1/4”.

6. To reset for a different depth stop, raise

the rollercase by about two rotations. Depress and turn the preset depth gauge to the desired setup.

Gauge Calibration From time to time, through normal use, he preset depth gauge may need to be calibrated.

1. Loosen the stop locking nut.

2. Turn the depth gauge stop (Figure 9, Item F) to set it to the proper height.

3. Tighten the locking nut.

Rollercase Lock The rollercase can be lock from any movement during planning in order to guarantee uniform thickness. To lock the rollercase, pull down on the lever (Figure 10). To release the rollercase, push up on the lever (Figure 10). Note: The rollercase can be raised or lowered when it is locked by exerting excessive pressure on the handle. However, cranking the handle when the rollercase is locked will wear down the locking mechanism prematurely. Gearbox A two-speed transmission, controlled by a push/pull lever (Figure 11, Item A), moves the stock through the planer at either 18 or 26 feet-per-minute. The push/pull lever is set while the machine is runing. Push the lever all the way in for 18 fpm, pull it out one stop for neutral and pull it all the way out for 26 fpm. Operation Depth of Cut Thickness planning refers to the sizing of lumber to a desired thickness while creating a level surface parallel to the opposite side of the board. Board thickness that the planer will produce is indicated by the scale (Figure 12, Item B), and the depth-of-cut gauge (Figure 12, Item C). Preset the planer to the desired thickness of the finished workpiece using the gauge (Figure 12, Item F). See the Workpiece Thickness Pre-set Gauge in this manual. The depth-of-cut is adjusted by raising or lowering the rollercase (Figure 12, Item D) using the handle (Figure 12, Item E).

• The quality of thickness planning depends on the operators judgment about the depth of cut.

• The depth of cut depends on the width,

hardness, dampness, grain direction and grain structure of the wood.

• The maximum thickness of wood that

can be removed in one pass is 1/8” for planning operations on workpieces up to 5-1/2” wide. The workpiece must be positioned away from the center tab on the rollercase to cut 1/8”.

• The maximum thickness of wood that can be removed in one pass is 1/16” for planning operations on workpieces from 5-1/2” up to 13” wide.

• For optimum planning performance, the

depth of cut should be less than 1/16”.

• The board should be planed with shallow cuts until the work has a level side. Once a level surface has been created, flip the lumber and create parallel sides.

• Plane alternate sides until the desired

thickness is obtained. When half of the total cut has been taken from each side, the board will have a uniform moisture content and additional drying will not cause it to warp.

• The depth of cut should be shallower

when the workpiece is wider.

• When planning hardwood, take light cuts or plane the wood in thin widths.

• Make a test cut with a test piece and

verify the thickness produced.

• Check the accuracy of the test cut before working on the finished product.

Avoid Damage to the Blades

• A thickness planer is a precision woodworking machine and should be used on quality lumber only.

• Do not plane dirty boards; dirt and small

stones are abrasive and will wear out the blade.

• Remove nails and staples. Use the

planer to cut wood only.

• Avoid knots. Heavily cross-grained wood makes knots hard. Knots can come lose and jam the blade.

Any article that encounters planer blades may be forcibly ejected from the planer creating a risk of injury.

Preparing the Work

• A thickness planer works best when the lumber has at least one flat surface.

• Use a surface planer or jointer to create

a flat surface.

• Twisted or severely warped boards can jam the planer. Rip the lumber in half to reduce the magnitude of the warp.

• The work should be fed into the planer

in the same direction as the grain of the wood. Sometimes the wood will change directions in the middle of the board. In such cases, if possible, cut the board in the middle so the grain direction is correct.

Do not plane a board that is less than 5” long. It is recommended that when planning short boards you butt them end to end to avoid kickback and reduce snipe.

Feeding the Work Figure 13 The planer is supplied with planer blades mounted in the cutterhead and infeed and outfeed rollers adjusted to the correct height. The planer feed is automatic; it will vary slightly depending on the type of wood.

• Feed rate refers to the rate at which the lumber travels through the planer.

• The operator is responsible for aligning

the work so it will feed properly.

• Raise or lower the rollercase to get the depth of cut desired.

• The surface that the planer produces

will be smoother if a shallower depth of cut is used.

• Stand on the side that the handle is

attached.

• Boards longer than 24” should have additional support from free standing material stands. These can be purchased from JET – Stock # 709207. See Optional Accessories on page 22.

1. Position the workpiece with the face to

be planed on top.

2. Turn the planer on.

3. Set the feed rate to either 18 fpm or 26 fpm. See Gearbox in this manual.

4. Rest the board end on the infeed roller

plate and direct the board into the planer.

5. Slide the workpiece into the infeed side

of the planer until the infeed roller begins to advance the workpiece.

6. Let go of the workpiece and allow the

automatic feed to advance the workpiece.

7. Do not push or pull on the workpiece.

Move to the rear and receive the planed lumber by grasping it in the same manner that it was fed.

To avoid the risk of injury due to kickbacks, do not stand directly in line with the front or rear of the planer.

8. Do not grasp any portion of the board that has not gone past the outfeed roller.

9. Repeat this operation on all of the

boards that need to be the same thickness.

Note: The planer has return rollers (Figure 14, Item A) on the top so an assistant can pass the work back to the operator. The assistant must follow the same precautions as the operator.

Avoiding Snipe

• Snipe refers to a depression at either end of the board caused by an uneven force on the cutterhead when the work is entering or leaving the planer.

• Snipe will occur when the boards are

not supported properly or when only one feed roller is in contact with the work at the beginning or end of the cut.

• To avoid snipe, push the board up while

feeding the work until the outfeed roller starts advancing it.

• Move to the rear and receive the planed

board by pushing it up when the infeed roller looses contact with the board.

• When planning more than one board of

the same thickness, butt the boards together to avoid snipe.

• Snipe is more apparent when deeper

cuts are taken.

• Feed the work in the direction of the grain. Work fed against the grain will have chipped, splintered edges.

Maintenance The planer will operate best if kept in good condition and properly adjusted. Check for Worn Blades

• The condition of the blades will affect the precision of the cut. Observe the quality of the cut that the planer produces to check the condition of the blades.

• Dull blades will tear, rather than cut the

wood fibers and produce a fuzzy appearance.

• Raised grain will occur when dull blades

pound on wood that has varying density. A raised edge will also be produced where the blades have been nicked.

Replacing the Blades Refer to Figure 15

1. Turn the planer off and disconnect it from the power source.

2. Remove the socket head

screws (Figure 16, Item A) from the chip deflector (Figure 16, Item B) on the rear side of the planer.

3. Remove the chip deflector.

4. Carefully turn the cutterhead by

hand towards you until it is stopped by the self-engaging latch.

5. Loosen and remove the six

screws from the gib. (Figure 17, Item C).

6. Remove the gib using the two

magnets (Figure 18, Item D) provided. Note: The magnets can be easily disengaged from the gib by tilting them to the left or right.

The blade edges are extremely sharp. Keep your fingers away from the edges at all times.

7. The blade is held in position by two pins. Lift the old blades from the pins using the two magnets. Do not use your fingers to lift the blade.

8. Using the two magnets, install

the new blade by carefully positioning it on the pins.

9. Using the two magnets, replace

the gib by aligning the holes in the gib with the holes in the blade.

10. Reinstall the six screws that

mount the gib.

11. Depress the latch to release the cutterhead. Release the latch when the cutterhead can be turned by hand.

12. Repeat steps 4 through 10 for

the other blade.

13. Reinstall the chip deflector and socket head screws.

Brush Inspection and Replacement Brush life depends on the amount of load on the motor. Regularly inspect the brushes after 100 hours of use. The brushes are located on either side of the planer motor.

1. Turn the planer off and disconnect it from the power source.

2. Unscrew the plastic cap to expose the

brush holder. Brushes are located on both the front and the rear sides of the planer.

3. Loosen the brush holder (Figure 19,

Item A) and remove the brush from the motor.

4. Replace the brush if the spring (Figure

19, Item B) is damaged.

5. Replace the brush if the carbon (Figure 19, Item C) is worn.

6. Replace the brushes and reinstall the

plastic cap. Adjusting the Table Level The planer will produce an uneven depth of cut (tapered cut) if the rollercase (Figure 20, Item D) is not parallel with the base (Figure 20, Item E). To restore parallelism of the rollercase with the base:

1. Turn the planer off and disconnect it from the power source.

2. Using a test piece, measure the height

of the taper.

3. Fold the front and rear extension tables.

4. Lay the planer on its back so that the bottom side of the base is facing you.

5. Clamp a vise pliers on the left side of

the shaft (Figure 21, Item F) next to the gear (Figure 21, Item G).

6. Remove the retaining ring (Figure 21,

Item H) and disengage the right gear from the top gear (Figure 21, Item J).

7. Slowly rotate the handle to raise or

lower the rollercase. The rollercase will move 0.004” for every turn of the gear by one tooth. Move the rollercase to the required distance to offset the taper.

8. Re-engage the right and top gear and replace the retaining ring to secure.

9. Release and remove the vise pliers.

10. Set the planer back on its base.

11. Make a test cut to verify the adjustment.

Replacing the V-Belt Refer to the Exploded View of the Head Assembly for Item Numbers listed below. Inadequate tension on the V-belt (Item 72) will cause the belt to slip from the motor pulley or the drive pulley (Item 73). A loose belt must be replaced. To replace the V-belt:

1. Turn the planer off and disconnect it from the power source.

2. Remove the screws on the right panel.

Remove the right panel.

3. Remove the belt by walking the belt from the motor and drive pulleys alternatively. Gently pull the belt while turning the pulleys at the same time.

4. Replace with a new belt. Walk the belt

on to the pulleys in the reverse procedure from removing the belt.

5. Make sure the belt is evenly seated all

the way on the motor and drive pulley grooves.

6. Reinstall the right side panel.

Dust Collector Chip Chute The planer is best used along with a dust collector. A dust collector chip chute (not shown) is available as an optional accessory. This can be purchased from JET — stock #708534. See Optional Accessories on page 22. The dust chute has a fitting for attaching a 4” hose. The dust collector chip chute is mounted to the planer in place of the chip deflector. To mount the dust collector chip chute:

1. Turn the planer off and disconnect it from the power source.

2. Loosen and remove the two socket

head screws (Figure 16, Item A).

3. Remove the chip deflector (Figure 16, Item B).

4. Slide the dust collector chip chute along the inside walls of the rollercase, so that the slots on the dust chute are aligned above the holes on the rollercase.

5. Reuse the two socket head screws that

held the chip deflector to mount the dust chute to the rollercase.

After mounting, attach a 4” diameter (O.D.) dust collector hose to the dust chute fitting. If the dust collector chip chute is used with the 4” to 2-1/2” adaptor, attach a 2-1/2” hose to the adaptor. Be sure to turn the vacuum on before operating the planer. Lubrication

• The motor and cutterhead bearings are sealed and need no lubrication.

• Gears and elevation screws should be

cleaned of debris and greased.

• The base cover can be coated with a lubricant such as furniture wax, to allow the workpiece to feed smoother. Be sure the lubricant used does not affect the ability to finish the workpiece with varnish, sealer, etc. Do not use any silicon-based lubricants.

Cleaning the Planer

• Keep the planer clean of any wood chips, dust, dirt or debris.

• After 10 hours of operation, the chains

and gears should have wood chips, dust and old grease removed.

• Use a common automotive bearing

grease to lubricate all chains and gears. Be sure all chains and gears have plenty of grease.
