OpenStack and Moving to Cloud

Agenda• Before Cloud• What is Cloud Computing?• Drivers of Cloud Computing• Cloud deployments models• Cloud delivery model• Why moving to cloud?• Enterprise Fears towards cloud• OpenStack and Gain the benefits…

• New computing technologies almost augment, rather than replace an existing technology
• So, cloud computing is a new way of delivering computing resources, not a revolution.
5
Cloud computing appears because of ..
• Business drivers – Capacity Planning– Organizational agility– Cost reduction
• Technological drivers:– Clustering– Grid computing– Virtualization
6
• Simply put, cloud computing is computing based on the internet. Where in the past, people would run applications or programs from software downloaded on a physical computer or server in their building, cloud computing allows people access to the same kinds of applications through the internet.

Why moving to cloud?

Teams can access, edit and share documents anytime, from anywhere, they’re able to do more together, and do it better.
17
Work from anywhere
18
Document Control• The more employees and partners
collaborate on documents, the greater the need for watertight document control.
• In cloud computing, all files are stored centrally and everyone sees one version of the truth.– Greater visibility means improved
collaboration, which ultimately – Better work and a healthier bottom line.

19
Security• Lost laptops are a billion dollar business problem. And
potentially greater than the loss of an expensive piece of kit is the loss of the sensitive data inside it.
• Cloud computing gives a greater security when this happens. Because data is stored in the cloud, you can access it no matter what happens to the machine.
• With hybrid cloud storage, data is secured
20
Competitiveness• Moving to the cloud gives access to enterprise-class
technology, for everyone.
• It allows smaller businesses to act faster than big, established competitors.
• Pay-as-you-go service and cloud business applications mean small outfits can run with the big boys, and disrupt the market, while remaining lean and nimble.
21
Environmentally friendly
• When your cloud needs fluctuate, your server capacity scales up and down to fit. So you only use the energy you need and you don’t leave oversized carbon footprints.
22
• Cloud computing has been a hot topic for several years, but while startups have been quick to adopt cloud computing, many corporate have been more cautious to make the switch.
23
But, Why enterprises are frightened of the cloud?
24
Losing control
By moving to cloud computing, the IT Director or CIO can feel like they’re handing over control to a 3rd-party. What happens if one of the drives goes or there’s a networking issue? Who decides what hardware to buy?

25
Security
Along with loss of control, security is arguably the biggest concern many large organizations have. Can other customers access our data? Have all the security patches been kept up to date?

Data Protection
For example, the UK’s Data Protection Act requires that personal data not to be transferred to any country outside the EU, unless that country “ensures an adequate level of protection for the rights and freedoms of data subjects in relation to the processing of personal data.” Practically, that means it’s often easier for servers to be physically located in the EU for many European businesses.

Performance and Uptime
• A recent survey by Research in Action [PDF] found that 43.5% of global IT managers were worried about losing revenue because of cloud service problems, while nearly 80% were worried about hidden costs such as damage to their brand due to downtime and poor performance.
28
Lock-in
“The best way to ensure you’re not tied to one provider is to automate as much of your setup process as possible,” says freelance cloud engineering specialist Ryan Stenhouse

If you’re scared of water, you probably wouldn’t go swim the English Channel right away, so it makes sense to dip your toe into cloud computing too.
30
How to overcome fear of the cloud
• Start by trialing a redeployment of internal system that doesn’t contain any confidential customer data. Then gradually take the plunge to a non-critical public system. This will allow all parts of the business to grow comfortable with the move to cloud computing, from IT to legal.
31
Time to know more about OpenStack
32
• OpenStack, the open source project designed to provide a collaborative approach to cloud computing, launched just three years ago.
• OpenStack is not only being labeled as “the next Linux,” it is gaining adoption at a rate that will hit the same critical mass in five years that took Linux 15 years.
