Greeting
O Jesus, I Have Promisedverses 1-3
O Jesus, I have promisedto serve thee to the end;be thou forever near me, my Master and my friend. I shall not fear the battleif thou art by my side,nor wander from the pathwayif thou wilt be my guide.
O let me hear thee speakingin accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will. O speak to reassure me, to hasten or control; O speak, and make me listen,thou guardian of my soul.
Prayers of presence
Responsive hearing of the Word of God
Psalm 127:1-2
Break thou the bread of life, dear Lord to me,
as thou didst break the loaves beside the sea;
beyond the sacred page I seek thee, Lord; my
spirit pants for thee, O Living Word!
Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord guards
the city, the guard keeps watch in vain.
Bless thou the truth, dear Lord, to me, to me,
as thou didst bless the bread by Galilee;
then shall all bondage cease, all fetters fall;
and I shall find my peace, my all in all.
It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to
rest, eating the bread of anxious toil;
for God gives sleep to God’s beloved.
Prayers of the heart
Seek Ye First
Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,
and all these things shall be added unto you.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Ask, and it shall be given unto you;
seek and ye shall find;knock, and the door shall be
opened unto you.Alleluia, alleluia!
Hearing the Word of God
Matthew 6:25-34
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear.
Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not of more value than they?
And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?
And why do you worry about clothing?
Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these.
But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will God not much more clothe you – you of little faith?
Therefore do not worry, saying, “What will we eat?” or “What will we drink?” or “What will we wear?”
For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed God knows that you need all these things.
But strive first for the things of God and God’s righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.
Sermon
“What Will We Eat?”
Invitation
Christ our Lord invites to this table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another. Therefore, let us confess our sin before God and one another.
Confession
Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done your will, we have broken your law, we have rebelled against your love, we have not loved our neighbors, and we have not heard the cry of the needy. Forgive us, we pray. Free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
All pray in silence
Hear the good news: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners; that proves God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven!
In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven!
Glory to God. Amen.
The Peace
Hymn
Be present at our table, Lord;be here and everywhere
adored; Thy creatures bless, and grant
that wemay feast in paradise with
thee.
The Holy Meal
The Lord be with you.And also with you.Lift up your hearts.We lift them up to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our
God.It is right to give our thanks
and praise.
. . .we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
. . .as we proclaim the mystery of faith.
Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.
. . .all honor and glory is yours, almighty God, now and forever.
Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
Breaking the bread and giving the bread and cup
Prayer
Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which you have given yourself to us. Grant that we may go into the world in the strength of your Spirit, to give ourselves for others, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
O Jesus, I Have Promisedverse 4
O Jesus, thou hast promised to all who follow thee that where thou art in glory there shall thy servant be.
And Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end; O give me grace to follow, my Master and my Friend.
