Devo 10:30 AM

This week, we took 12 of the teens to Tennessee for a retreat. The goal was to spend time together as a youth group, growing closer to God and each other. On Tuesday, we hiked the Chimney Tops trail. It is 4 miles; two miles up, and two miles back down, and we used this hike as a teaching tool for spiri-tual application. After spending a total of four hours on our hiking trip, with 12 teenagers of varying ath-letic abilities, here are a few lessons we learned.

First of all, not everyone is on the same "fitness level" spiritually. Several teens had to stop their hike to wait on those who were falling behind. Just like our teenagers, not all Christians are as strong as others. Those Christians who are weaker need to be exercising their faith. We do that by working for Christ (James 2:17-18). Hebrews 11 is full of example of people using their faith to get them through extremely tough situations. Just like our physical strength needs to be exercised to become stronger, so does our spiritual strength.

Secondly, we learned how to rely on one another for motivation. Not one teenager rolled their eyes, grumbled, or complained about having to wait on anyone who was lagging behind. And when the last two hikers came crawling up the last five steps of the trail, the entire group clapped and cheered. The church does that for us spiritually. We are all racing to the same place: heaven (2 Tim. 4:7-8). Stronger Christians need to be patient with those who are weak, not accepting their weakness, but helping them up those spiritual hills, helping them become stronger. Christians who are struggling need to look for help in those who are strong. Think of that celebration when we finally reach our heavenly destination!

Finally, we learned that there is an end. When those stairs seemed like they would never end, when it felt like our knees were going to give out, when we couldn't catch our breath, when we thought that we couldn't go on anymore, we reached the top! That view made the hike worth the trouble! This life is hard. There are times spiritually when it feels easier to give up. But think of the view when we over-come all our spiritual obstacles (Rev 21:2). Look to these words for comfort: "Come on! You're almost there! You can do it! We're not giving up!"
