Song – I Saw The Light/I’ll Fly Away I wandered so aimless life filled with sinI wouldn’t let my dear saviour inThen Jesus came like a stranger in the nightPraise the Lord, I saw the lightJust like a blind man I wandered alongWorries and fears I claimed for my ownThen like the blind man that God gave back his sightPraise the Lord I saw the lightI saw the light, I saw the lightNo more darkness, no more nightNow I’m so happy, no sorrow in sightPraise the Lord, I saw the lightI was a fool to wander and a-strayStraight is the gate and narrow the wayNow I have traded the wrong for the rightPraise the Lord, I saw the lightI saw the light, I saw the lightNo more darkness, no more nightNow I’m so happy, no sorrow in sightPraise the Lord, I saw the lightSome glad mornin’ when this life is over, I’ll fly awayTo a home on God’s celestial shore, I’ll fly awayI’ll fly away, oh, glory, I’ll fly awayWhen I die, Hallelujah, by and by, I’ll fly awayWhen the shadows of this life have grown, I’ll fly awayLike a bird from prison bars has flown, I’ll fly awayI’ll fly away, oh, glory, I’ll fly awayWhen I die, Hallelujah, by and by, I’ll fly awayJust a few more weary days and then, I’ll fly awayTo a land where joy shall never end, I’ll fly awayI’ll fly away, oh, glory, I’ll fly awayWhen I die, Hallelujah, by and by, I’ll fly awayI’ll fly away, oh, glory, I’ll fly awayWhen I die, Hallelujah, by and by, I’ll fly awayI’ll fly away, I’ll fly away

Prayer – Leo

Reading: A collection of Martin’s favourite Psalms – Simeon When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, who are we that you are mindful of us, human beings that you care for us? (8:3,4). You see us as your people, the flock under your care and you are our God (95:7).

Who then can ascend the hill of the Lord? It is the generation who seek Him, those who seek God’s face (24:3,5,6). Therefore, it is good to draw near unto God (73:28) because the Lord is majestic (8:1) and above all things (119:91). He is compassionate, gracious and abounding in love (103:8).

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it (24:1,2) So great is His majesty that the heavens declare His glory; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge (19:1,2).

If the earth is the Lord’s, why then are we downcast? Why are we so disturbed? (43:5) We need the Lord’s mercy and His unfailing love to blot out our mess. Cleanse us for our many transgressions are before us (51:1-3). Oh, praise the Lord and forget not all His benefits, who forgives all our sins (103:1-3).

Even though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we will not fear, for you are with us, your rod and staff they comfort us (23:4,5). You are our light and salvation and the stronghold of our lives (27:1). You are our refuge and strength an ever-present help in trouble (46:1). Therefore, you can heal all of our diseases, redeem our lives from the pit and crown us with love and compassion, love and compassion that satisfies our desires for good things, so that our youth is renewed like the eagles (103:1-5). So be still, for we know that you are God and you will be exalted in all the earth (46:10).

Serve the Lord with gladness (100:2). How do we serve? We serve in ‘all things’, for your laws endure and all things serve you (119:91). We serve by:• Knowing that the Lord He is God (100:3) and that those who walk in His

ways are blessed (1:1).• Knowing that the Lord has made everything for his rule (8) and put

everything under His image bearing and co-ruler’s feet (8:6).• Praising the Lord because we are fearfully and wonderfully made (139:14)• Lifting our eyes to the mountains so that we are reminded that our help

comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth (121:1,2).• Knowing that God’s Word is a lamp for our feet and a light to our path

(119:105).

Page 3: Opening Music Prayer · Prayer Leo Reading: A collection of Martin’s favourite Psalms Simeon When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which

• Knowing that the Lord is good to all. He has compassion on all He has made (145:9). He works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed (103:6).

• Receiving the compassion that a father has for his children (103:13).• Gaining a heart of wisdom by being taught to number our days (90:12).• Waiting on the Lord so that we become strong. It causes us to take heart

(27:14). As we dwell in the shelter of the Most High we will rest in the shadow of the Almighty, our refuge in whom we trust (91:1,2).

• Receiving the favour of the Lord our God. Let it rest on us so that the work of our hands may be established (90:17).

• Giving thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures forever (136:1).In ‘all things’ we will praise the Lord all our lives (119:91). We will sing praise to our God as long as we live (146:2). Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Every morning you satisfy us with your unfailing love that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days (90:1,2) Therefore we make a joyful noise unto you and come before your presence with singing (100:1,2).We lift up our heads to the King of glory. Who is the King of Glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord Almighty, He is the King of glory (24:7-10), and we will praise Him with our souls and all our inmost being (103:1). Amen.

Litany of Thanksgiving and Prayer – Henni Burggraaf (Communal responses in bold)

We who have known Martin, realise he has left stuff in our lives, – bits of his faith, his passion, his love, his courage and boldness, his generosity, his humour, (wacky and spontaneous and full of pranks) and his integrity in serving the mission of God in this world, whatever that required of him – this is his legacy, which accompanies us into the days ahead.

LITANY: Lord, we thank you for the life of Martin Hanscamp...

For our memories and the stories of a life shared so generously. For words, reflections and recollections that have resonated with our experience of Martin which have brought his image freshly before us.

We acknowledge that you are Lord of the living and the dead, and that while Martin’s life has ended, we are bound together still, not just by the past, but by your continuing call on our livesto follow in the steps of Jesus, to serve the cause of right, to be a light to the nations, to feed the hungry, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, care for the sick and free the captiveThis mission is central to our being.

Pause:Lord, we give you thanks.

For all that Martin was As a husband to Anita for 37 years,As a father to his children, As a brother and as an uncle in the wider familyAs a teacher to his studentsAs a colleague to others in his work placeAs a mentor to manyAs a generous friend to us all

Lord we give you thanks.

For Martin’s zest for lifeFor the big belly laughs, the chuckles and giggles barely containedFor the fun, games and laughter as he enjoyed the comical side of lifeFor the pranks and the humour that provoked him into making dull moments creatively bright.

Lord, we give you thanks. For the intellect that Martin brought to many a conversation, stimulating bold, creative thoughts that moved us as listeners closer to you.

Lord, we give you thanks. For the social gatherings around the backyard fire pit, for the happy hours and the impromptu celebrations of life affirmed under your gracious hand, always with the generous hospitality of food and drink.

Lord, we give you thanks. We thank you Lord, that all the days that were ordained for him here on this earth have now been completed, that you have released him from all physical and emotional pain. Thank you that in the eternity you offer to your people there is rest and wholeness, and joy in your presence.Lord, today we thank you for the life of Martin.

For the person of faith that Martin was, and grew to be as You led him into his calling, both in the church and in our world, through his youth work and in Christian Education. As he fought to see your kingdom established in all spheres of life – debating in the political arena, for the inclusion and advocacy of your people as Christian teachers in a secular world.

For the community of your people blessed through his life of faithful service among us.

For all our memories, and Martin’s hospitality in a life shared so generously with so many, and for the 5 extra years you gave him to complete so much with Anita and the children.

We offer you our gratitude, Father God.We acknowledge today O God.

We loved Martin! Oh God, we have named you as the Giver of life, our Creator, our refuge and tower of strength.

And indeed, Lord God, you are all that, and more, to us.But what are we to say to you now? How can we put into words the grief we are experiencing?

We acknowledge that this loss resonates deeply with in us Here at this time we express our deep sense of loss,The confusion, the emptiness, the restlessness, and the pain we feel.

We loved this man, and we were not ready for him to die.Loving God, we pray for those who mourn Martin, especially Anita, Marita, Andrew, Sim, Lauren and Taminka,as well as the wider family, friends and neighboursBe gentle with them in their grief, help them through this season of loss and surround them with your unfailing love and kindness.Show them the depths of your love, for you are the Father of compassion and the source of every comfort.

Just as Martin drew strength from life in community, may we find support and strength in each other, in the community you have put around us.Lord we give you thanks for the Christian community, of which we are a part, together with Martin.

We find comfort in knowing that we are a resurrection people, followers of Jesus, who was raised to life and who conquered death, and who leads us ever forward and onward into an eternity with you.

Continue to be present in our grief and loss, and give the comfort and hope which only you can give.

As we say our farewells and celebrate Martin’s life, may we may begin to discover the legacy left to each one of us through knowing him, and find your amazing grace and strength to continue the journey in faith and in hope.

Thank You God, for your grace to your servant Martin and for his life among us. Amen

Bible Readings: Psalm 73:28 (Martin’s favourite verse)As for me, it is good, to draw near, unto God.

Romans 12:1-2 (The Message)So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

To ‘nod your hat’ to MartinMartin loved to celebrate, to be generous, build others up and be useful. So to create space to interrupt your day and acknowledge his life we brainstormed a few ‘classic Marty’ things you might like to do... • Share memories and reflections. As a

kind of ‘sharing circle’/‘after-the-service milling space’, we’ve created a Facebook group ‘Memories of Martin’. You can join the group here.

• Bake a cake from Martin’s Morning Tea Favourites recipe collection.

• Have a cuppa, get a coffee or a donut, play a board game, pick or gift yourself or someone who knew Martin some flowers.

• Martin was a big supporter of TEAR Australia (now Tearfund) and shared their vision to tackle injustice so all can experience the fullness of life. In response to requests of how you can honour Martin/support the family we’d prefer you give a ‘useful gift’ through this page setup in memory of Martin. In this way we hope to continue the work of planting the seeds and tools needed to celebrate strength, find hope in hard places, build community & have access to safe water without fear.

• Finally, get on with it, read a book, write a book! Play some backyard cricket, build a cricket pitch so you have somewhere to play that game! Move some pavers, make a playground, renovate your empty nester or get around to those family photos!
