ALL ABOUT RECOVERY; INFORMATION< SKILLS ANDTOOLS
Family and Recovery
When a loved one becomes unwell it can have a huge effect on familymembers and/or friends. This course will explore the implications and discusspathways for wellness and empowerment. We will also introduce the existingsupport systems in County Mayo.
Let’s talk about Recovery
This course will start with the attempt to define what HEALTH actually is. Wethen explore RECOVERY in Mental Health, historical context and definitionsfrom different perspectives.
Over the 3 sessions we will present and discuss tasks, conditions and tools,as indicated by international research. The news is good! As always we arehoping for a lively conversation and fresh thinking.
Money Management
This course will look at money management and budgeting and the differentways this can be achieved and where you can get support, e.g. MABS. Comealong if this is of interest for you!
All Ears, Listening Skills
Communication is an important aspect of all human interactions. It can alsolead to big misunderstandings and conflicts. In this course we will explore theLISTENING part in a fun and down to earth way with an emphasis on the vitalimportance of this skill, which is often taken for granted. Enjoy!
Let’s WRAP
WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) was developed as a tool to supportpeople to become more resourceful and self-directed on their journey. Manynow feel that everybody should have a WRAP plan. In this introductory sessionwe will discuss this simple system which could help you identify triggers, solutions, early warning signs and a crisis plan to help you to get back on track.
The 12 steps demystified
Ever wondered what the 12 step programmes like AA (AlcoholicsAnonymous), NA (Narcotics Anonymous, ALANON (for peopleaffected by an addiction of a relative or friend) etc. are all about. Thismodule will introduce you to its origins, underlying belief systems andpurpose for recovery. We will try to lift the veil of mystery and arehoping for a lively discussion.
Spirituality and Mental Health
This course will explore the term “Spirituality” as a very personal yetuniversal theme. How can we tap into our inner resources to becomemore alive, alive and real? Open to everyone regardless ofbackground, faith, belief or non-belief!
Exploring Stigma
Attitudes by society to people with mental health problems can begrounded in fear and suspicion fuelled by myths. This can lead tostigma and discrimination and often results in isolation and moreproblems for the individual. Mental distress can also be seen as anatural part of the human experience. Overcoming stigma helps all ofus to be more fully human. What do you think?
Mindfulness and Recovery
Recovery is the journey of Discovery and recently “Mindfulness” hasbecome a much discussed practice to help people to centrethemselves in day to day living. We will present and discuss origins, background and theories and will introduce some very basic tools. Please share your experiences and thoughts with the group if you feelcomfortable to do so!
Volunteering
In this session we will look at the ins and outs of Volunteering andhow to make the best of this experience.
Back to Education
Due to a diagnosis of Mental Health issues a person’s life can beseverely interrupted and sometimes it is hard to imagine how to pickup the pieces and move forward. In this course we will present andexplore the possibilities of getting back to education.
Body and Mind connections
Most people are aware of the mind-body connection—how your mentalprocesses can affect your physical state. If you feel frightened, your heartraces. Being embarrassed can cause you to blush. When you think ofsomething happy, you are likely to smile. Does this go even deeper? Whatabout the reverse—a body-mind connection? Can altering your physical statein some way affect your mental state? These are interesting questions and wewill try to explore them in this new course.
All about Stress, Resilience and Motivation
Excessive stress is universally accepted as an obstacle to wellness, thereforeit is well worth to have a closer look. We will discuss definitions, possible causesand symptoms. This will be followed by looking at aspects of stressmanagement and strategies to help us cope better with the ups and downs oflife. Life happens and can bring unexpected challenges, which can feeldiscouraging and devastating. The trick is to foster RESILIENCE and bounceback! We will explore this important topic. Everybody can feel the lack ofMOTIVATION sometimes. This part will look at factors and ingredients to getus back on the road and into action
Collaboration – working together
The title speaks for itself and we will explore the practicalities and benefits ofcollaboration in everyday life and within the health services.
Story Telling
Nothing is more powerful than listening to somebody telling their unique storywith all its ups and downs. Your story could be told through writing, poem, songor another creative way. This course aspires to provide you with some tools toexpress yourself in the most authentic way. We will discuss reasons for tellinga story, the appropriateness and effectiveness for different settings andconsider safe guards for yourself and your privacy.
Managing your appointments
A meeting with a professional can be stressful for anybody. The question iswhat I can do to make the best out of a time-limited appointment. We wouldlike to hear your experiences, explore with you how one can prepare and findsupport. Some tools will be introduced and discussed.
GENERAL MENTAL HEALTH TOPICS
Living with Depression and beyond
This course will explore the nature and experience of Depression andconsider its wide-ranging impact on all aspects of life. We will reflecton diagnosis and medication as well as alternative practical steps thatsome people found helpful in managing this experience. Please feelfree to share if you feel comfortable to do so.
Anxiety and Panic Attacks
This course was put together on request of many previous students.Anxiety plays a big role in most mental health difficulties. We want todiscuss symptoms and underlying causes and discuss some tools tomanage these sometimes crippling feelings and reactions.
Let’s talk about CBT
CBT – short for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy – is one of the mostwidely available psychological therapies within the Mental Healthservices in Ireland. This course will give an introduction and overviewof its origins, benefits and underlying theory.
Addiction and Mental Health

Living with Bi-polar and beyond
Living with bi-polar disorder can be a rollercoaster. We will talk aboutdiagnosis, medication and tools that claim to be effective. This coursemight help to develop strategies to take back control and managechallenges.
Let’s talk about BPD
BPD stands for Borderline Personality Disorder, which is a muchdisputed and misunderstood term. What does it mean for theindividual? We want to shed some light on diagnostic criteria, what itis, what it is not, and discuss some options and therapies for peoplewith this label.
Living with Psychosis and beyond
This course will start to explore the different aspects of this experience – fromdiagnosis and medication to Recovery tools for self-management.Psychosis/Schizophrenia does not have to stop people from living a fulfillingand meaningful life.
This will be followed up by the “Hearing Voices” modules, which we extendedby popular demand. These modules could be a step towards developingeffective strategies for managing symptoms and ways to take back control andmanage challenges. Students with self- experience are very welcome to sharetheir story if they feel safe to do so.
The stages of grief
The word grief is usually associated with bereavement, but does it also occurin other life-changing situations and events. We often hear that people got tostages to heal. What are these stages? What is their relevance? Are theywritten in stone? Let’s explore this important topic.
Self Esteem
Firstly we will explore the term “Self–Esteem”, how it can be defined and whatinfluences it. What are the connections to life experiences and how we thinkabout ourselves and the world? Then we will focus on solutions and what canactually be done to develop authentic self-esteem. Some tools and exerciseswill be introduced.
