Two Founder’s Fund Grants Equal Engaged and Happy Open Door Seniors In June of 2019, Open Door celebrated the Grand Opening of our very special Senior Center. Made possible due to a $3,600 Founder’s Fund “Wish Grant,” this long-awaited addition to our programming became a reality. This entirely new program space, specifically targeted for our growing senior population, their physical needs and generation-specific interests, has been a tremendous success!

Since the opening, the Senior Center has deepened the relationships our senior individuals share. They look out for each other and assist each other, such as Evelyn S. working together with Lynn S. to solve crossword puzzles. They encourage each other during their seated Yoga and Zumba classes and laugh together often. Music, stories, or a movie from their generation continually initiates reminiscing among our seniors.

The quality of programming at the Senior Center was further improved due to a $3,838 Founder’s Fund “Wish Grant” awarded the fall of 2019 for an accessible patio for our seniors. Not only was a large concrete patio laid outside the Senior Center side door, but the grant included accessible patio furniture and a gas grill. Our seniors had to wait to enjoy our new outdoor patio due to the 13-month interruption of the COVID pandemic. But since reopening, enjoy it they have!

A group or an individual may choose to eat lunch outside, and a variety of programming takes place on the patio as well. The seniors have decorated pots, then planted lovely flowers that decorate the tables and hang from nearby trees. The patio is such a welcoming space that a bird family with three new babies has taken up residence in the birdhouse hanging from one of those trees.

The Open Door Senior Center offers generation-specific programming and is a very special place that generates a sense of closeness and community among those attending. For all of this, we are extremely grateful for the Founder’s Fund “Wish Grants!”

Founder’s Fund to the Rescue! During the pandemic, like countless other businesses, Open Door was faced with HOW to safely provide services to the individuals we serve and support. Open Door’s business is… people. How do we maintain the relationships that we have spent years cultivating while keeping everyone safe?

The answer to our dilemma was found in technology. In order to make this work, it would require changing our service delivery model, committing to investing the funds in technology, and providing the extensive training to staff needed to accomplish our vision. But this wouldn’t be cheap! This vision would require outfitting each and every location with a mini computer, HD camera, and software package. Not to mention having to upgrade existing televisions so that everything is compatible and able to function as a giant computer screen.

Where was the money going to come from? That’s where the Founder’s Fund came into play…and thank goodness! The earnings from the Founder’s Fund gave Open Door the primary funds needed in order to purchase the necessary equipment to bring our vision to life. It literally saved the day…programming, that is.

The Future of the Founder’s FundThe Founder’s Fund has enabled Open Door to do amazing and out-of-the-box activities for our consumers. A lot of incredible wishes have been granted over the years, such as the Senior Center, music classes, horticulture projects, communication devices, art projects, and many other life-enhancing opportunities. Open Door is currently working on various projects and has projects in mind for the future.

The Open Door East Workshop was able to purchase a number of items to enhance their programming, such as a new gaming system, outdoor interactive games, and an Echo Dot, just to name a few. The West Workshop is revamping the back area so there will be three different rooms. One of the rooms in the back of West will be a yoga and dance studio and self-defense classroom. Another room will be a gaming and recreation area. Yoga mats, punching bags, workout mats, boxing gloves, and yoga pose posters were purchased with earnings from this fund. Open Door also purchased a number of table games such as shuffleboard, an arcade closet, ping-pong table and other items. The last room will be a creative and expressive arts studio where music and arts classes will be conducted.

The Founder’s Fund is able to grant amazing opportunities like these projects that will be conducted at West. We want our consumers to be able to have endless opportunities and resources available to them. Thank you to all who have been and will be contributing to the Open Door Founder’s Fund.

Open Door Founder’s FundHave you ever thought about leaving a longtime legacy? How about a planned impact that will benefit adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities? Your thoughtful gift can make a difference in lives for many years to come.

What is the Founder’s Fund? The Founder’s Fund was set up in 1997 and is managed by the DeKalb County Community Foundation (DCCF). This organizational endowment fund was established in order to provide income to Open Door. The DCCF handles all administration and investment responsibilities, freeing Open Door to pursue our mission.

What is an Endowment Fund?An endowment fund is a fund that you agree to invest in forever, leaving the principal untouched and spending only the principal earnings. An endowment is a permanent commitment and provides endless support to Open Door. When you give this way, Open Door is able to count on those proceeds for years to come, providing long-term financial success.

Ways to Give to the Endowment• Cash

o Direct gifts of cash or checks to the fund.

• Bequestso A bequest is a gift made through a living

trust or a will. It is the most popular, easiest to make, and costs nothing during a donor’s

lifetime.

• Securitieso Securities can be transferred over to

nonprofit organizations. The nonprofit is then able to sell the securities and keep the proceeds, which are then used toward

whatever purpose the donor chooses.

• Personal Property or Real Estateo Making a gift of real estate removes a large

taxable asset from your estate and benefits your heirs by providing an income tax deduction equal to the appraised fair market value of the property, with no capital gains

tax due on the transfer.

• Life Insuranceo You can choose Open Door to be a

beneficiary of a life insurance policy. This allows one to provide a large gift that they may never have been able to during their lifetime. This benefits the donor’s heirs as well, because policy proceeds distributed to

a nonprofit are exempt from estate tax.

• Charitable Remainder Trustso This trust provides fixed income to you, a

spouse, your child, or any other loved one you choose. This trust enables you to provide a lifetime of personal income and income for beneficiaries for a specified period or until death of the last heir. The assets are then transferred to the fund of Open Door.
