3 STUDYING AT A UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES

3.1 Definition of the scope of studies The scope of UAS studies is expressed in credits. One credit (cr) refers to about 27 hours of work. The amount of work done by degree students in one academic year is around 1600 hours, corresponding to 60 credits.

In 2005 the definition of the scope of studies in higher education institutions was changed to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS).

The main principles of the ECTS are:

• One academic year of full-time study corresponds to 60 credits. • The system is based on the amount of work the student does, which must include

all the work required from the student in his/her studies.

The objective in changing to the system is to support and significantly increase the mobility of students, teachers, researchers and other higher education staff by means of a common definition of the scope of studies. Several European countries have not had a definition of the scope of studies; they have expressed the scope in years or semesters. This has made it difficult to compare the scopes of degree programmes and studies.

3.2 Premises and academic year Lapland UAS has premises on the Kemi, Tornio and Rovaniemi campus. The contact information of premises is found on web pages http://www.lapinamk.fi/en/Who-we-are/Contact-info/Premises and from map at the end of this guide. A academic year and general exam dates are given at www.lapinamk.fi StudentsStudy guideNew students Academic Year 2015-2016.

3.3 Timetables and campus info screens Timetables are posted on Lapland UAS’s web pages at www.lapinamk.fi Students Applications and quick links Timetables. The timetables are categorised by campus. Teaching groups are marked on the timetables with their own codes, which are formed as follows:

1) The letter in front of the code denotes the place where the studies are arranged, T=Tornio.

________________________________________________________________________________

Open University of Applied Sciences Student’s guide

8

2) The codes of the groups are formed according to the degree programme, e.g. 54D Degree Programme in Information Technology

3) The year at the end of the code denotes the year when the group began studies, e.g. T504D11.

Students studying together with a group of degree students should follow the study schedule themselves. Possible changes in the schedule or the place of teaching are usually announced on the campuses’ info screens and/or via e-mail. The link to the info screens is given on the study schedule page. Remember to check the info screen and give your e-mail address to the teacher at the beginning of the study unit!

3.4 Modes and methods of study Lapland UAS arranges studies as contact teaching and multi-mode and online education that utilises information networks. All modes of study include independent study, which varies according to the content of the study unit and the mode of study. Contact teaching refers to lectures and practical training where a teacher/tutor is present. Multi-mode education consists of periods of contact teaching, web-supported study and independent study. Online study is a relatively new, popular mode of study. Study units may be completed fully or partly online, and they are supported by counselling. Multi-mode and online studies can be completed flexibly in your home locality through an Internet connection. In such study units you familiarise yourself with the learning material, search for information on the web, discuss in a discussion forum and complete learning exercises. An active, self-tutored role is especially important in multi-mode and online education. Lapland UAS utilises an iLinc distance education system and a Moodle learning environment. You can log on to Moodle with your username at https://moodle.eoppimispalvelut.fi. The iLinc distance education system requires a different username, which you receive when you register for a study unit that uses iLinc. You can log on to iLinc with the username at https://ilinc.eoppimispalvelut.fi/. More information about learning environments and iLinc distance education system you can find at www.eoppimispalvelut.fi . The most commonly used learning methods include lectures, exams and various written exercises. The way(s) to complete a study unit is/are presented in the description of the study unit and at the beginning of the study unit. Lectures Lectures are the basic form of teaching at a University of Applied Science. The goal of lectures is to familiarise students with the basics of the study unit and provide the most current knowledge about the topic under study. Learning at lectures requires active listening, participation in discussions and making notes on what is covered in the lecture. You should take notes on the main matters and themes covered in the lecture. Headings and categorisations presented by the lecturer may help you in taking notes. The lecturer

9

may also distribute an outline of the lecture, on which you can easily add notes and your own thoughts on the covered topic. Exam A written exam is a common way to assess students’ learning at the University of Applied Sciences. An exam is not only an assessment, it is also a learning situation in which you go over, bring to mind and process items and information you have read into written form. There are many types of exams, such as book exams, lecture exams, homework exams and group exams. Exam answers are essay-type texts, only shorter. A good exam answer is based on thorough reading of reference material, and it is logical, clear and focused on the essential. The purpose of the exam answer is to indicate that the student understands the content and language of the covered entity. Exams are arranged in conjunction with the study units, in which case the date of the exam is set during the study unit and it is not necessary to sign up separately. The campuses also arrange general exam dates, where students can take missed exams and book exams connected to the study units. Students must sign up for general exams at least 2 weeks before the exam date by filling out an exam envelope (available at the study affairs office) and returning it to the teacher who is coordinating the exam. Written exercises Students compile numerous written exercises, ranging from exam answers to extensive essays, during their studies. Writing is an excellent learning tool, as it helps you piece together and parse your thoughts. Writing may initially feel labourious, as it requires more time than discussion. The advantage of writing is that you have time to think about and modify the written text. Your writing skill will develop as you write, so be bold and begin writing! The most typical written exercises in University of Applied Sciences studies are exams, essays, summaries, lecture diaries and learning diaries. Essay An essay is a relatively short, easily understood, contemplative text that combines the requirements of the heading, references to source material and your own thoughts. In an essay the topic is treated from a specific viewpoint, based on reference material, and your own thoughts and arguments are presented in your own personal style. You must support your own arguments and conclusions with information gathered from different sources and clearly indicate the sources in the text. The length of an essay depends on the entity you are completing and the amount of reference material you use. Summary A summary is a brief abstract or description of the main points of a text you have heard or read. A summary is a fairly direct abstract or description and does not usually contain your own thoughts or evaluation. The length of a summary depends on the length of the summarised text. A rule of thumb is that a summary should be about one third the length of the original text.

Lecture diary A lecture diary is based on notes taken during lectures, but it is not a summary of the lectures. It depicts your own learning at lectures belonging to a specific study unit and reflects your thoughts, experiences, observations and feelings related to what you have learned at the lectures. Your comments may be critical, supplementary, approving, contemplative or interpretive. Learning diary A learning diary depicts your own learning and reflects your thoughts, experiences, observations and feelings related to what you have learned. The goal of a learning diary is to comprehend, itemise and interpret your own learning processes. A learning diary is a tool that lets you learn to learn, develop your self-respect and support your self-tutoring. Portfolio A portfolio refers to your own ”document briefcase” or collection of works you choose, which you completed during your studies / study unit for a certain purpose. A portfolio lets you display your development and achievements and develop your own personality, professionalism thinking and learning. A portfolio also allows you to examine past events and open windows to the future.

3.5 Planning your studies You should compile a study plan before beginning your studies. A study plan contains goals and partial goals and a plan for achieving them. Your study schedule is an essential part of the plan. It is important to compile a realistic study plan so that you can divide your time between studies, work, family and leisure time. Remember to make your plan flexible, as situations may arise in your life that require your time and necessitate modification of a plan that seemed good.

3.6 Evaluation of study performance Studies completed by Open UAS students are entered into a WINHA student register. Completed studies are evaluated according to the criteria given in the description of the study unit. The grading scale is either passed/failed or excellent (5) – failed. The teacher will evaluate the course and enter the grade in the student register within one month. A failed grade can be renewed up to two (2) times and a passed grade can be improved one (1) time during the two (2) semesters following the completed study unit. Renewal attempts also include any times you signed up for an exam and either didn’t show up or left the questions unanswered.
