IInn MMeemmoorriiaammIt is with great sadness that we announce the passing of two long-time supporters of CCTV - Rita Arditti and George Warner.

Rita was a “Friend” of CCTV andappeared in an early documentary produced by Cambridge Women inCable on women and cancer.Diagnosed with breast cancer almost40 years ago, Rita, a scientist by train-ing, sought to uncover the environ-mental and political causes of cancer, and co-founded the Women’sCommunity Cancer Project in 1989.She was also an ardent feminist, co-founding the New Words bookstore in1974. A native of Argentina, Rita

worked on behalf of the Argentine Human Rights movement in the 1980’s,bringing her in contact with the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo, agroup committed to truth and justice and the restitution of their true identityto the children disappeared with their parents or born during the captivity oftheir kidnapped mothers during the 1976-1983 dictatorship.

George was a former CCTV Boardmember and 2004 recipient of theLeading Role Award. George servedin the US military in England andFrance during World War II. A grad-uate of the New EnglandConservatory of Music and BostonState Teacher’s College, he taughtmusic in Charlestown and through-out the Cambridge Public Schools, primarily in the elementary schools, where he also served as an actingadministrator. George was a formervolunteer at the CambridgeCommunity Center. He spent mostof his time in the service of St. Bartholomews Church, with the YoungPeople’s Fellowship, Men’s Club Vestry, Choir, and as a Sunday SchoolTeacher, Youth Worker, Treasurer of the Diocesan Committees, Chair of theDoris A. Warner Memorial Scholarship Funds, and sponsor of fund raisingevents. He was also a member of the Iota Chi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi.

As George travelled in the greater Cambridge area, he would often hear “Hi,Mr. Warner, you were my music teacher….!” He referred to CCTV as a “mini-United Nations.”

DDaanniieellJJaaccoobbssspotlight on

DDaanniieell JJaaccoobbss has been a cablecast intern at CCTVsince the end of 2008, and has gotten off to a running start by producing six videos on topics he iswell-versed in – travel and music. We took sometime out in between the BeLive programs he wasmonitoring to discuss the inspiration for his projects, and his advice to other members.

NNMM:: WWhhaatt bbrroouugghhtt yyoouu ttoo CCCCTTVV?? DDJJ:: I started out when I met someone who had beeninterning here, and I thought “I want to get intovideo, this would be perfect.” I feel like everythingI’ve done in my life has eventually led me to video. Ipaint, I do photography, I write, I’m a musician, andvideo is all of those parts coming together.

NNMM:: YYoouu’’vvee pprroodduucceedd sseevveerraall pprrooggrraammss hheerree aattCCCCTTVV aarroouunndd lliivvee mmuussiicc aanndd yyoouurr ttrraavveellss –– ccaann yyoouussaayy mmoorree aabboouutt tthhoossee?? DDJJ:: When I first started at CCTV, I had some video I

had already taped, but I didn’t know how to edit it. Ihad footage of different places – the first video Imade here was from Morocco. Then, soon after Istarted at CCTV, I went to India to work in jewelryproduction, and I took a lot of photos and shot videothere. As far as the music goes, I'm fascinated by therelationships between music, movement, and envi-ronment, especially in isolated communities whereoutside influence is minimal. The rhythms of life inthese places seem to be in lock step with traditionalmusic. I’m also a musician – I’ve played a variety ofstyles of music for 29 years. At first, I taught myself, but then I ended up going back to music school forclassical guitar, and I’ve studied music in differentparts of the world. I also toured the U.S.as a solo musician for about 9 years, until the fall of2004. With music shoots, you have the chance toexpose some great musicians, and the whole processis fun – even setting up and communicating with thevenue owners – it’s all a positive experience.

NNMM:: WWhhaatt wwiillll yyoouurr nneexxtt pprroojjeecctt bbee?? DDJJ:: Dan Jeff’s, the soundtrack pro teacher, and I aredoing a Regattabar shoot of Lionel Loueke, a greatAfrican musician, next week. It’s the second shoot I’llhave done there.

NNMM:: AAss aa nneewweerr mmeemmbbeerr,, ddoo yyoouu hhaavvee aannyy aaddvviiccee ttooootthheerr mmeemmbbeerrss wwhhoo aarree ttrryyiinngg ttoo ggeett ssttaarrtteedd oonn tthheeiirrpprroodduuccttiioonnss?? DDJJ:: Just do it. The other day, I saw some people cut-ting down trees in my mother’s yard, and it was actu-ally interesting to watch, so I started shooting it. Ifyou see something that interests you, just shoot it,learn how to edit, and start putting somethingtogether. At CCTV, people are so encouraging. WhenI was getting started, I wanted to use the portablestudio, but I didn’t know how to use it. Shaun Clarketold me “you can do this,” and he showed me howto use it. Everyone here is so positive – if you canimagine it, someone will help you do it.

NNMM:: WWhhaatt’’ss yyoouurr ffaavvoorriittee tthhiinngg aabboouutt CCCCTTVV??DDJJ:: I like the people. I think that’s my favorite thing. That’s really the touchstone of any place – if it does-n’t have good people, why would you be drawn to it?You need people who are encouraging and welcoming, and everyone here is like that. And it’sexciting to help people on projects, and they helpyou on yours. It really is a nice community.

CCaappiittaall bbuuddggeett ttiimmee.. YYiippppiiee!! CCTV’s Board of Directors approved the capitalbudget for 2010 and we can move forward with newpurchases. Each year, the Mass CommunicationsTechnology Committee, made up of Board, staff andMAC members, gets together to plan out the com-ing year of spending. In 2000, CCTV received a one-time capital grant from the cable provider when thecable contract was renewed with the City ofCambridge, and by careful budgeting we have beenspending down those monies on our facilities andgear.

However, we reached the end of that grant and arenow challenged this year with keeping our operationrunning on a very slim $20,000 budget. This is downfrom the average of $65,000 that we usually spend. We expect to upgrade our Final Cut Pro licenses tokeep our editing operation on the cutting edge, addanother Panasonic DVX100b to the camera fleet toserve more members and programs, replace the oddpiece of worn out gear to keep stuff running, andcontinue developing aspects of our website and digi-tal distribution platform.

Oh, and if you haven’t heard, CCTV is moving to anew home before the end of the year. In terms ofcapital spending, this will be a major factor in thedecisions we make in 2010. We wouldn’t considerspending money on items or installations that wecouldn’t take with us to our new home. In fact, we’llbe raising a bunch more money to cover the cost ofour move – which will not be insignificant.

We hope to receive another capital grant from thecable company at the beginning of its next licenseperiod in 2011, which is being negotiated betweenComcast and the City of Cambridge as we speak. We’ve got great people going to bat for CCTV andthe interests of all the viewers and producers in ourcity, but until then we’ll keep our belts tight andmake due with what we’ve got.

4Two Views: Alaska & Israel by AnnCowanA Study in Contrasts Alaska: Huge & mostly cold & uninhabited, travel by large shipwith many tourists. What we saw of Alaska was its ‘InsidePassage’, a stretch of the Pacific coast, protected from the ocean by off-shore islands and awarming current with a few small towns and some native Indian/Inuit contact. Notableviews were of snow covered mountains and multiple glaciers and stories of their increasing-ly rapid melting over the last 100 years.

Israel: Small, usually hot and intensely inhabited, travel by foot, bus & hostel alone. Israelis a very diverse land, intensely and scientifically cultivated and settled by a surprisinglywide variety of people. The land varies from extremely dry desert to lush green valleys, irri-gated fields & hillsides.

The photos aim to get a sense of both of the characteristic and the unique of the place ofboth people and environments.

4Photos from the School Year Production ProgramCreate a film using still images ONLY! This is the guideline behind the first project for ourAdvanced School Year Production Program students in the Spring Semester. The ideacomes from the 1962 French film La jetée by Chris Marker, where the story of a man travel-ling into the past to save the doomed present day is told entirely through still images.

The project is an exercise in photographiccomposition and strong sound design.Students received a 35mm camera, 4 rolls offilm and a sound recorder. All the sounds thatthey incorporate into their finished piece willbe original. But the real challenge comesfrom shooting on film. They are limited to acertain number of shots WITHOUT the aid ofmonitoring their progress on a digital cam-era. After the project is complete, studentswill selecti their favorite images to be dis-played in our Drive-By Gallery.

And the beat goes on… Bandwidth TV is CCTV’s live music show which show-cases local, unsigned bands. The show, which is produced in conjunction with CCTV’s Bandwidth project, has been actively featuring bands in the studioon a monthly basis.

NNeeiiggbboorrMMeeddiiaa PPaarrttiicciippaannttss GGeett PPeerrssoonnaallThe NeighborMedia program provides Cambridge residents with a platform to share news that mat-ters to their community. Maria Burns Ortiz and Mark Jaquith are two NeighborMedia citizen journal-ists who write stories on local issues that affect the lives of other Cambridge residents, including theimpact of real estate development on local neighborhoods & educational opportunities for parentswith small children.

Over the past year, we’ve produced a series of spotlight videos featuring participants in theNeighborMedia program. In the videos, participants discuss their motivation for joining the programand share their thoughts on stories they’ve covered. You can watch them all on our NeighborMediaYouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/neighbormedia

We asked Maria and Mark to explain how their involvement in the NeighborMedia program hasaffected them personally. Here’s what they had to say:

"Now, other people that I know, who know that I'minvolved, will say things like, 'Oh did you hear aboutthis?' or 'What do you know about that?' and all of thesudden now there's this added pressure to be on top ofwhat's going on. And so I do feel like I'm looking at thecommunity in a different way. I'm studying what's goingon. I'm paying a lot more attention. And I'm actuallyenjoying it and feel like I'm getting a lot more out ofbeing not just in the community but being involved."Maria Burns Ortiz

"I'm always looking for things to take picturesof and write about now. It's a lot of fun. Thereare a lot of parks that people don't even knowexist that I'd like to bring to the public's atten-tion. There's always something gong on thatisn't being covered. It's fun to be able tohave an opportunity to bring stuff up."
