Yi  intended  to  facilitate  the  discussion,  by  asking  the  participants  to  summarize  their  OPINIONs  regarding  Kanban  Method  and  Scrum.

The  participants’  opinions:  • Can  use  at  the  same  time  and  supple  each  other  • Both  are  Agile  • Different,  Scrum  more  known,  Kanban  less  • Scrum  can  get  some  ideas  from  Kanban,  e.g.  WIP,  CT  • According  to  context  • Kanban  is  task-‐based,  Scrum  is  change-‐oriented  • Kanban  is  only  used  when  there  is  already  process,  not  used  to  create  a  new

product.  Predefined.  • Kanban  is  not  efficient  in  task  management,  but  in  blocking  issues.  • Kanban  is  process  improvement,  can  fit  for  any  processes,  besides  Agile.  • Scrum  is  more  transparent.  • In    Kanban,  bottleneck  needs  to  be  solved  to  make  progress.  • Kanban  doesn’t  require  commitment  in  specific  time  period.  • Kanban  is  more  Lean-‐Agile  • Kanban  (board)  is  a  tool.  Scrum  is  a  way  of  team  working.  • Kanban  (board)  can  not  show  the  history  data.

Yi  then  facilitates  the  audiences  to  re-‐think  their  logic  behind  their  opinions,  are  those  judgments  logical,  and  be  clear  what  are  they  actually  talking  about,  e.g.  Kanban  board  or  Kanban  method,  e.g.  Scrum  framework  or  Scrum  implementations.  By  listing  those  parameters  or  attributes  of  Kanban  Method  and  Scrum,  to  see  what’s  exactly  the  differences  between  those  two  methods.  Then  use  those  listed  differentiators  to  judge  those  opinions,  and  improve  together,  adding  /  updating  the  differentiators  and  correct  the  opinions.  E.g.  why  “Kanban  can  not  show  history  data”?  1. People  were  actually  talking  about  Kanban  board,  and  behind  the  judgment

is  people  believe  Scrum  can  show  history  data.  2. The  reasons  they  claimed  is  the  physical  board  can  only  show  the  current

data,  rather  than  the  previous  ones.  3. People  argue  that  using  an  e-‐tool  can  support  the  history  data  feature.  4. So  it  comes  to  “when”  you  need  history  data?  “where”  to  have  history  data,

has  it  to  be  with  the  current  data?  “who”  needs  history  data?  “why”  needs  history  data?

5. Is  it  a  difference  between  Kanban  Method  and  Scrum?

As  the  session  was  going  to  close,  Yi  shared  his  opinion  regarding  Kanban  Method  and  Scrum  as  the  audiences’  interests.  • Applying  Facts  –  Interpretation  –  Judgment  –  Action,  while  debating  or

arguing  around  different  opinions,  to  make  the  conversation  helpful,  you  need  to  go  back  to  the  facts  of  our  opinions,  and  verify  if  they’re  valid

• Kanban  Board  is  different  from  Kanban  Method,  while  in  Chinese,  people  all  call  them  “Kan  Ban”  (Pinyin),  the  confusion  caused  some  meaningless  discussions.  Most  teams  were  actually  using  just  the  Kanban  Board  and  thought  they’re  using  Kanban  (Method),  while  a  Scrum  team  could  also  use  the  Board  (which  they  would  call  Task  Board  or  Sprint  Board,  etc.).  Using  Kanban  Board  doesn’t  mean  or  distinguish  Kanban  Method  from  Scrum.

We  haven’t  form  a  WeChat  group,  but  you  can  join  the  WeChat  group  for  all  participants  as  below;  since  the  QR  code  will  expire,  you  can  add  my  WeChat  account  and  let  me  add  you  in;  plus,  you  can  WeChat  me  if  you  want  to  discuss  Kanban  Method  &  Scrum  with  me,  or  just  want  to  connect,  welcome!
