WOW, What a convention for

the New Zealand breed, Robert and Peggy Crawford had Best In Show. They deserve it for years of hard

work and staying on top with the best New Zealands in the country.

Dean and Adam Benker won Best Opposite New Zealand with a Broken. We had a record Number of New Zealands in all varieties and classes, The Judges worked hard for great results.

Hope we can keep this trend rolling with excellent New Zealands and large numbers at all Conventions and National shows.

I am working on revising the committees. I think some committees need to be updated and tweaked. Anyone interesting in being on a committee or would like to be removed just let me know. I will be contacting members about helping on different committees in next couple of months.

In the next couple of months I will get more information to you about the ARBA National in Kansas. Larry Snavely and company will be the Breed Chairperson and will have more information about the hotel and banquet.

Don’t forget the Spring National in Texas 2012. It should be a great show, so plan on attending and give your support. We will be needing Bids for the 2014 Spring National.

Get together and put a bid in. Don’t forget we need information, like hotels, Judges, and Location. See your guide book for rules. That is the only way the bids will be accepted. And all in writing to give your speech to the club offi cers.

Most every thing is done on the Internet. Did you know that we are on face book? I will ask our Editor if he can get a link from our web site to the face book. I found that different questions and ideas between each other can help communicate with related ideas and problems. It is a great way to get information out.

I would like to thank you, the New Zealand Breeders for selling some excellent stock to new and old exhibitors. In so many different breeds, breeders sell rabbits that are not worth the cost of feed to keep them alive. Our auction had some very nice outstanding New Zealands to auction off.

I went to Iowa to judge and a Very Nice outstanding New Zealand buck won best in Show in both shows. This exhibitor bought this rabbit from the convention. This shows that the New Zealand Breeders sell very good stock.

Don’t forget we accept names for the outstanding member of the year. I really cant believe we don’t have more names turned in for this award. If you put some one in and they didn’t get the award that year, send the letter back in again. The only two cents I will put in is, make sure this person really deserves it and helps with the Federation and its members over the years.

The last time I was President we had very few guide lines and rules to go by in print. I had changed that by putting all this information into our guide book, for members to read and help guide them through the years. I had lots of knowledgeable members to get that together, but now it works. And now it is time for a new guide book with more information and updated materials and articles to guide each and every one of you. That will be out very soon.

So I will close for now. if anyone has question or concerns please let me know. I will seek them out the best I can. Happy Holidays and we’ll see you all some time soon.

Wow, where do I begin? It was a great Convention and

it was topped off by Robert & Peggy Crawford’s “BIG” BIS Win…. Congrats again to Bob & Peggy…

I have a long list of folks that I want to thank for all of their hard work and generosity for the Federation.

First & foremost, Al Esterline. Al did a great deal of work and it started as soon as Sue asked him to be our Breed Chairman. The Marten House was a very nice affordable Headquarters with good meals. The Banquet, also held @ the Headquarters was well attended with plenty of good food. When I did check out, the best surprise was the total due, about $400 less than last year in MN.

The NZ area was well taken care of and Al made sure he had everything covered and check out was a breeze. Thank-you Al, you did a great job…

Arnie & Sue Schmidt did a great job on our Booth. They also worked very hard every day in the Booth. This sure makes it easier on Julie & I. To ALL of the other members who spent time in the booth & donated items to the raffl e, thank-you. The profi t from the Raffl e was $653.00

Tony Fortney did a wonderful job with the Auction. A complete list of the auction is printed elsewhere in this issue of the Times. Thank-you Tony & all of the breeders who donated animals…Total raised at the Auction $3180.00…

Paul Grundtisch & Dave Mangione thank-you for donating the great Raffl e Rabbits. This type of generosity have become very important to the Federation. Total amount raised from this Raffl e was $1650.00. Thank-you again Paul & Dave…

To our Breed Secretary, Janellen Swartz and all of the Writers, thank-you. This year’s paperwork was wonderful, it sure makes it easy when the forms are complete and accurate. Thanks also to all of the breeders/members who carried rabbits. With this many rabbits to be judged, it took a great team effort & that is what we got.

Lastly, thank-you to the judges, again with these numbers they judged nearly non-stop all day long.

If I forgot anyone, please forgive me, but so many people stepped up and for that Julie & I are grateful, thank-you…

Please fi nd the minutes for both the board & general meeting elsewhere in this issue of the Times. Both meetings went well and the general meeting was well attended.

At the General Meeting, the new offi cers were sworn in. Thank-you, to all of the outgoing offi cers for their

hard work, and welcome to all of the new ones. We look forward to working with you all. A special thank-you toSue Borden, as you all know Sue has given so much tothe Federation, and I am sure she will continue to doso. The Federation is in a better place thanks to Sue’sleadership…

We did award a Scholarship to Mallory Munster, CongratsMallory. Please remember all of our Scholarship info isnow on the website. Our fund is very solid and we look forward to more Federation Youth members applying forfuture consideration.

We also inducted two new members to our Hall of Fame, Al Esterline and Pleaz & Jane Kirby. Congratulationsto these deserving members. Our Great Friend, CharlieCrabtree received the “Outstanding Member Award”.It was with great pleasure I gave Charlie his plaque atthe General Meeting. Congrats Charlie, this was a welldeserved award…

Next up is the National in Texas. Watch for detailsin both the Times and on the website. We are lookingforward to this trip and another Great National put on bythe Texas NZ Club.

With the 2012 ARBA Convention going to Wichita, please let Larry Snavely or Lisa Jennings know how youcan help. Arnie & Sue Schmidt are again going to takecare of the booth, so please get with them also. As wasproved in Indy, we work together and it will be anothergreat Convention…

New President David Cardinal will be working on someof the Committee’s. If there is something that you wouldlike to help with, please let him know.

I want to thank the membership for the overwhelmingsupport given to Julie & I. It means a lot and we willcontinue to do all we can for the Federation…

Well, I think it is time to bring this to a close. Julie & Iwould like to wish you all and your families the very bestduring the upcoming Holiday Season & a Happy NewYear.

T E BREED IN THE LEAD.TT Wow, the New Zealand Rabbit won the ARBA CONVENTION. The past trend has been the fancy breeds winning theshow. I may be wrong but the last time I rememberthe New Zealand winnig the big show was in 2000 atColumbus Ohio. Bill Gardhouse won the open andStephen Cooper winning the youth for a grand slam.

Congratulations to Robert Crawford. I do not knowanyone more deserving and dedicated to win the

show. Bob has been working for years to improve thebreed and undoubtably the best New Zealand breeder inthe world. Probably all the White New Zealands at theshow had some of his stock in the background. He sellseverybody nice New Zealands and comes back and whipseveryone year after year. This is not luck because hedominates the classes.

I also want to congratulate the rest of the class winnersand everyone that showed there. The New Zealands

were well represented with very nice rabbits.I hope everyone from the Eastern part of the UnitedStates survived the the nasty weather and had minimal

damage. I talked to the Pa. boys and they were withoutpower for three days.

Kathy and I would like to wish everyone HappyHolidays.

Larry

Another successful ARBA Convention is in the books I hope everyone made it home without any mishaps and are now in the process of getting things sorted out to be ready for Texas.. Congratulations

and thanks go to Bob Crawford. Congratulations on his bigwin and thanks for proving once again that New Zealandsare truly the “Breed in the Lead”. Also congratulations toDean and Adam Benker for the Best Opposite Sex rabbit. All the breeders deserve a pat on the back for the qualityof animals that were put on the tables. As far as I coulddetermine the depth in all classes was remarkable.

Many thanks go to Arnie and Sue for the beautifulbooth The racing bunny was great. Al not only ran agreat show but also provided the necessary unwindingplace (although at times maybe the winding up place)for all of us. Thanks Al and family. To all of the writersand everyone else who made this a great experience,THANK YOU!

Now it is time to get back to the barn and prepare forwinter in hopes we will be ready for the winter and springshows. I am pretty well prepared and look forward tokind of a laid back time. I am hoping that our winter willnot be as trying as our summer was.

Until next time,

Glad to be back in as a Director of GGthis great organization. Hate GGto see when we don’t have enough GG

people to cover all the Director’s spots in an election, maybe it is time to lower our number of Directors to maybe 8 or 9. Something to think about.

Just came back from a great convention in Indianapolis. The New Zealand breed is once again back at the topwith BIS!!! Congratulations to Bob & Peggy Crawford forthis great win!!! It is most deserving for them to achievethis win and I must say long overdue. Many of us hadtears of joy after the announcement and I am sure oldHarry and Fib were happy too.

We had a good time at the convention seeing everyone and getting the chance to visit with our friends.Congradulations again to Bob & Peggy Crawford for themwinning with their senior buck and the New Zealandstook another best in show! Also the Benkers for their BOS with their doe. With all of us working to get better,we shouldn’t have such a long dry spell unitl the nextone for NZ’s.

The weather is always a challenge for us as breeders.Whether is is snow and cold that hit the PA crowd just asthey left for convention or, the tremendous heat we hadin the south. So many people lost rabbits down here.We are getting several calls a day from kids that wantgood quality breeding stock or show rabbits. We showedin Beau Bridge, Louisiana this past weekend, 11/19. Italked to a good friend of ours, Wallice Fontenot. Hecame home from work one day and had lost 22 rabbitsthat day. Another breeder lost 8 in one day. We lostsome also, but not near that many. We all do our bestto get by.

Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas to eachand everyone of you and your family.

Take Good Care,

H llo from Northern Illinois,HH I hope this fi nds everyone in good health and also that everyone made it home from Indy safe and sound.

First of all I would like to thank Al Esterline for thewonderful job he did at getting everything in order. He also did a good job in setting up the motel andbanquet.

If you didn’t make it to Indy you missed a good timeand a well run show.

I would like to thank my wife Sue and her daughter,Kelly, for all the work they did on decorating the boothby making the car. Even though we did not win wehad many compliments on the booth. Just a FYI DavidMills and his wife were going to take the car home anduse it for the 4-H this summer, so at least it was notgoing to go to waste. I would like to thank everyonewho spent time in the booth, either selling tickets, promoting the breed, signing up new members, or selling merchandise, without the volunteers we couldnot do all those things.

I would like congratulate all the winners in the openand youth. The judges were impressed with the depthof the classes. A special congratulations to Robert &Peggy Crawford on winning BOB and Best of Group andespecially BEST IN SHOW. Before they went up for bestof group Robert was making a comment that always abridesmaid never the bride, well he can’t say that anymore!

I would like to thank Sue Borden for all the time shehas spent working in the best interest of the breed andthe club. The club has come a long ways during her tenure. Thanks to our new president David Cardinal for wanting to step into and fi ll some big shoes. Anyone thatthinks that the offi ce is a cake walk is sadly mistaken.

Finally I would like to congratulate Mallory Munster onbeing the recipient of the the 2011 scholarship award.Way to go Mallory and good luck in college!

That’s about in for now hope everyone has those nestboxes full for Texas.

Your Director,

Arnie Schmidt

Convention in Indy was such a CCgreat time. From socializing CCwith great friends at “The Rabbit Hutch”, to a great banquet, to Robert and Peggy Crawford’s Best In Show with their New Zealand White

Senior Buck. We were all so happy that they receivedthat cherished award.

With another convention behind us, it is time nowto prepare for the 2012 New Zealand Nationals in FortWorth, Texas on April 20-22. It is a great opportunityfor some breeders to compete at a nationals in morethan one breed, one of the others being Californians. Many of us exhibit both New Zealands and Californians.Several members have contacted Pete Basgil to donatesanctions and purchase advertisements in the showcatalog. If you have not done so already, please do soASAP. A fl yer is available on the AFNZRBA website thatbriefs the information that you will need. Please makesure and mention that you are with the New Zealandclub when making your reservations at the CrownePlaza South, the headquarters hotel.

If you have any questions concerning the nationals, contact me via my e-mail, [email protected], or bymy home phone 830-232-6344.

The motivation for writing an article on New Zealand Red color goes back to the debates and arguments that took place during the revision of the New Zealand Standard for the 2011-2015 Standard of Perfection. These discussions were not only heated within the NewZealand club but, at times, also became testy with theARBA Standards Committee.

Please let me preface the article by saying that my viewson red color are based on more than 25 intermittent yearsof raising and showing reds, going back to 1974. I also had the privilege of knowing and showing against two of thebest red breeders ever in John Jennings and Ron Meyer.I not only competed against these guys but also spent countless hours talking to them about reds and red color. Many of you don’t remember, but John Jennings, back then, was to New Zealand Reds what Robert Crawford istoday to New Zealand Whites.

My education on red color was greatly infl uenced byAl Meier, a devoted red breeder, who happened to be thelong- standing chair of the ARBA Standards Committee. At some of the conventions, long ago, he spent hourstalking to me about red color. Al would take me fromcoop to coop explaining which rabbit had good red color and which did not- and why.

The proper color for a New Zealand Red is sorrel- likeyou would fi nd on a good sorrel horse. Sorrel can bedefi ned as either a light - reddish brown or a dark bright orangey red.

A clean even color over the entire body is moreimportant than the actual shade of red. The rabbit should be free of ticking (especially ear lacing), smut, scattered white hairs or a frosty brassiness around the haunches. The color should extend down the hair shaft as deep aspossible.

I have heard many red breeders - and judges as well-say that they prefer the darker reds. It is almost a certainguarantee, if you look closely, that most of these darker reds are loaded with smut. Backstroking the fur on theforehead or crimping the fur above the tail with one’sfi ngers will reveal a preponderance of smut or black hairs.Red is a color that is susceptible to brindling. This is truefor dogs and cattle as well as rabbits.

Scattered white hairs in the coat are a genetic fault. This could be a DQ if they are excessive, in the judge’s

opinion. These reds should be culled from the herd. Smallwhite spots, however, are usually the result of a nest boxinjury or fi ghting. This is why reds should be given their own cage once they are weaned.

The faults and disqualifi cations for red color aredescribed in the Standard of Perfection and need not be repeated here.

It has always been desirable to have the belly color onreds be the same or approximately the same as the topcolor. There was a lot of complaining by some breeders-old and new- when we tried to edit and rewrite the wordingon belly color for the new standard. There is a very strongcorrelation between good belly color and good top color on reds. Even though reds are a wide band agouti it hasalways been the desire of breeders that they appear tolook like a self or solid rabbit. This is also true for other breeds that have a red variety like Rex and Satins.

In the 1991-1995 New Zealand Guidebook therekis a picture of a John Jennings buck showing the bellycolor being the same as the top color. For your reference, the picture is reprinted in the new guidebook. I had thegood fortune of actually seeing and handling this rabbit when I visited Jennings at his home in Mt Aukum in theCalifornia gold rush country.

At the 2011 ARBA Convention in Indianapolis, one of the judges faulted many of the reds for having poor bellycolor. A lot of these reds also lacked good top color. Thiscould be the result of the current practice, by some, of breeding whites into the reds to improve type and size. Not showing good color could have been because of thelighting, too, since reds do not show off their color wellunder fl uorescent or LED lights.

I can understand why some red breeders mix the colorssince there is a big gap in quality when you compare thereds to the whites, blacks and brokens. To be honest, wehave on rare occasion and in a limited fashion crossed the colors to try and improve the type on the reds. Theoverwhelming majority of our reds that have won at thebig shows have no white in the background yet some of the winners did come from a mixed heritage.

If one is going to cross the colors it is imperative to start with the very best whites and very best reds (in both typeand color). Making crosses with less than the best willput the herd in a downward spiral. Save the best agoutis(not the steels!), or even better the rare copper since theyhave a stronger rufus factor, and breed them back to your best reds. In three generations or sooner you should get the good color back- that is if you had good red color tostart with.

NEW ZEALAND RED COLORBy

Manuel Hidalgo

Page 23: Open New Zealand wins Best In Show

21 October - November - December 2011.

Red is a diffi cult color to fi x and one generally seesdifferent shades of red in the same litter. It often seemsthat the rabbit with the best color is not the one with thebest type. It is critical to keep some of these good colored reds for the breeding program.

A New Zealand Red with very good type and fair or poor color should not go very far on the show table sincecolor is worth 15 points. Because there are so many pointsassigned to color, I feel that both judges and breedersneed to take a stricter interpretation of the standard whenevaluating the color on red New Zealands.

Over all though there is the tendency for reds to darkenovertime and over the generations. This means that if breeders are selecting the correct rabbits that the red color will improve over time.

In conclusion, the biggest problem facing reds today-and there are many- is not the type or the color but thelack of breeders. We need new red breeders in a big way.Reds are on the borderline of becoming a heritage variety. This would be a shame since the reds were the fi rst and for many years the only New Zealands. At one time theywere the most popular rabbit in America. The need for more red breeders is the main reason that we got back into them after a 10- year absence.

A red with excellent type, color, fur and condition, seen in natural light, is a beautiful rabbit to behold. It isour goal, some would say it is our folly, to produce redsthat can compete on an equal footing with the other NewZealand varieties. We hope that there are some “new”New Zealand Red breeders out there who are willing tojoin the rest of us in this endeavor.

The following is a reprint of an article reeived by Dr.Wendy Feaga, with her permission. Wendy is a memberof the AFNZRB.

[email protected] Rabbit & Cavy Health CommitteeI am seeing an unusual number of young rabbits dying

with a jelly diarrhea. In some cases I am loosing adults and nursing does. What is going on?

A number of rabbitries are reporting losses of 4-8 week old rabbits, some with no signs of illness, some withjust a hint of diarrhea, but many with full blown mucoidenteritis with rapid weight loss (wasting), diarrhea andjelly stools. You may be lucky to lose one or two in thelitter, or, the entire litter may die over a period of a week.Generally the adult rabbits are unaffected, but this timewe are seeing some adults dying especially nursingdoes.

The fi rst reports of unusual deaths due to diarrheasurfaced after the 2008 ARBA Convention in Michigan. One exhibitor thought that the fl oor boards were toblame, but I saw convention rabbits on risers whichcame down with the jelly diarrhea at the end of theconvention or very soon afterwards. So there was not agood correlation between the ARBA boards and disease.Often there are complaints of illness after the ARBA convention – the convention rabbits are exposed to otherrabbits, new water supplies and general stress, so illnessis expected.

It appears we are seeing a new infectious agent towhich the rabbits have never been exposed, and this isfairly wide spread. We are seeing deaths in adult rabbits, sometimes losing as many as half the adults, an agegenerally resistant to diarrhea, or at least an age whichusually recovers totally in a few days of pulling them off pellets and just feeding hay.

In the 4-8 week olds, pretty much all that show signsof illness will die regardless of what you try. Rabbits over3 months of age are more likely to survive. I have triedvarious medications on the babies with little success. One that survived was given just hay and water and nomedications. Subcutaneous fl uids are helpful in the olderrabbits, but as I said before, little appears to save the4-8 week olds.

Fecal exams may show coccidiosis, but treatment forcoccidiosis is unsuccessful leading me to believe thatthere is an additional disease and not simply coccidiosis.Often I have seen clostridia in fecal samples of rabbitswith diarrhea, but have not seen unusual numbers of thisnormal bacteria in these youngsters.

High protein feeds will aggravate the problem andshould be avoided when the rabbitry is experiencing theselosses. Although feeding hay is no guarantee of avoidingthis current strain of mucoid enteritis, it remains the bestrecommendation to lessen your losses. Be sure to givefresh hay each day to nest box babies to insure their fi rstmeal is hay to establish the correct pH and microbes intheir GI tract. In an out-break, I recommend giving freshhay twice a day to does with litters over 3 weeks of age.Instead of full feeding these does and litters, feed pelletstwice a day and limit the pellets so they are cleaning upeach feeding in a couple of hours.

It’s important to provide good sanitation by removingsoiled bedding and cleaning the cage fl oors with awire brush to remove visible manure, feeding hay on aregular basis, avoid over-crowding, and providing waterin a closed water system (impossible in winter whenfreezing water forces us to use bowls). Before movinga new rabbit into a new cage, especially doe and litter,be sure to thoroughly clean and disinfect that cage andequipment. But the bottom line is that the rabbits needto develop and immunity to what appears to be a newinfectious agent.

My hope is as this disease goes through a rabbitrythat the stock which are exposed and survive will haveimmunity so that eventually this disease will run its coursein a year. Also the normal evolution of an infectious diseaseis to become less virulent over time because when it isthis virulent it dies with its host. A successful organismdoes not kill its host so it can continue to spread throughpopulations.
