PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY
SEAMLESS PIPE PRODUCTION PROCESS CHAIN INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING OPERATIONS:
1. STORAGE OF BILLETSHot-rolled billets of 140mm as 4000-10200 mm long bars or concast billet of 200mm, 4000-9600 mm long are transferred from the mill to the storage area by 850 automatic transportation carriages or delivered by motor vehicles on special pallets. The billets are fed to loading tables by automatic hoisting devices or magnet cranes. The loading table enables stacking of a certain number of billets in order to ensure continuous feeding of disc cold saws.
Controlled parameters: heat quality certificate (laboratory test results), billet geometrical dimensions (selectively – two billets from a heat).
2. CUTTING OF BILLETSVertical cold saws with carbide discs are applied to cut billets to certain lengths. Billet measuring and weighing system is located upstream the saws. Roller tables accept billets from the disc cold saws and transfer them to a chain buffer conveyor ensuring continuous billet feeding to the walking-beam furnace. Length of billets after cutting is 750 – 4200 mm.
PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY
3. HEATING IN A CIRCULAR FURNACEBefore billets are loaded into the walking-beam furnace they pass through the weighing system in order to control the billets loaded. The circular gas walking-beam furnace with throughput of 80 tons per hour heats a billet up to 1130 — 1300 ⁰C. Controlled parameters:* furnace temperature by zones * heating duration * billet surface quality at the exit from the furnace (presence of cracks, burning, bending) – controlled visually
4. BILLET PIERCING• furnace charging machine lays billets on a transportation roller table to
deliver them to the piercer• roller table delivers the billets to the entry side of the piercer• piercer shall be adjusted accordingly• billets are transferred to the charging chute and from there they are delivered to the rolls• Controlled parameters: surface temperature of each shell at the mill exit
PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY
5. SHELL ROLLING IN THE ELONGATOR (PQF)The continuous elongator (a PQF mill) is used to make a rough tube. The PQF mill consists of four three–high stands and a stand for tubular billet reduction. A shell with a mandrel inserted is delivered into the mill stands where its sequential reduction takes place. During rolling the mandrel moves in the rolling direction with the rate equal to the rate of the steel exit from the first stand. The three–stand extracting mill catching the free end of a rough tube and helping to extract the mandrel is located immediately after the PQF mill. The mandrel released is delivered to the mandrel circulation system where it is cooled and
lubricated.
6. REDUCTIONAfter the rough tube leaves the extractor, a circular saw cuts its tail end. Next step is the induction reheating furnace, which is necessary for the adjustment of temperatures along the length and the cross-section of rough tubes. After the induction furnace the tube is transferred to the stretch–reducing mill. Before reducing the rough tube passes through a water descaling unit which removes scale from its outer surface. After the descaling operation the tube goes to the 28–stand stretch-reducing mill having a three-high stand construction. During the reduction process the tube outside diameter and wall thickness are reduced to the required values.
PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY
7. COOLING BEDAfter the stretch–reducing mill a tube is transported along a transporting roller conveyor and then it is ejected sideways to the cooling bed by a special device. Walking beams with electric–powered drive move the tube through the cooling bed and simultaneously rotate them around their axes, so they are uniformly cooled. At the end of the cooling bed the tube is transferred to one of the two parallel roller conveyors by a pivot arm system and transported to three batch saws.
8. TUBE CUTTING
The batch saws, which are circular saws with carbide discs cut a tube to the required length in accordance with the orders, 6-12 m. A bundle length can be adjusted by means of automatic movable stops. Controlled parameters: pipe length after cutting, quality of cutting (deviation from perpendicularity, presence of burrs).
PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY
9. STRAIGHTENINGAfter cutting pipes are transported to the cross-roller straightening machine to eliminate bending.Controlled parameters: pipe bending after straightening and pipe surface quality – controlled visually.
10. EDDY CURRENT TESTINGAfter straightening pipes pass a dust-collecting device where steel particles are removed from the inside and the outside of a pipe, then they are delivered to the non-destructive inspection unit to detect defects with eddy current. Eddy-current inspection system detects cracks on the outside surface and cracks close to the outside surface. Pipes with unremovable defects are rejected. Controlled parameters: presence and depth of defects on the outside surface.
PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY
11. PIPE MARKINGPipe can be marked with a paint or with a mechanical mark according to the customer’s requirement.Marking can be made on the full length of the pipe and can include the following information: standard number, heat number, shipment number, steel grade as well as any information required by a customer.
12. INTERMEDIATE STORAGEAfter marking, tubes come to the output magazines. The tubes intendedfor further finishing are placed by heats in the intermediate store bymagnetic cranes. The tubes ready for shipment are bundled andtransported to the finished-product storage area by a crane.
PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY
13. HEAT-TREATMENT LINEHeat treatment is required for a certain part of pipe range. Pipes to be heat treated are delivered from the intermediate warehouse to the hardening (normalizing) furnace. After heating pipes are delivered with a roller table to the quenching unit (fast water cooling), after cooling pipes are transported with a roller table to the tempering furnace. Controlled parameters: surface temperature of each pipe at the exit from the furnaces (controlled with a pyrometer).
14. STRAIGHTENINGAfter heat treatment tubes are transported to a straightening machinewhere they are straightened in order to remove curvature.
PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY
15. HYDRO TESTINGTubes are delivered to a hydro-testing press to be tested by high-pressurewater. The process is automatic, including transportation and adjustment.
16. BEVELINGHeat treated tubes (or tubes for which heat treatment is not required)are transferred by the cross transfer to the tube facing line for bevelingthe pipe ends. The operation is made in two positions, including in-housetransportation and adjustment.
PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY
17. ULTRASONIC TESTINGThen tubes are transferred to the nondestructive testing line wherelongitudinal defects are detected by means of an automatic ultrasonic
rotary plant and the wall thickness and length are tested additionally.
18. MARKING, PAINTING, WEIGHING, AND SHIPMENT OF FINISHED PRODUCTTubes which passed the nondestructive testing are delivered to the marking machine. After marking there is a possibility to weigh and measure the length of each pipe. Then an anticorrosive coat is applied on tubes and (if a customer requires) plastic caps inserted. Then the tubes are packed in hexagon bundles of 2,5-5 t weight and tied with the packaging machine. Suitable steel strips and textile slings are used for tying and lifting the bundles.
