Grade Ten Programming for 2019 – 2020Grade 10 Orientation and M10At MAC our Grade 10 students are welcomed the first day in the fall with a Grade 10 Orientation. MAC has students attending from Junior High schools across the city and starting at a new school can be challenging. This orientation day is a great opportunity to make new connections and develop new friendships. During this day students have the opportunity to learn more about MAC, find their classes, meet their teachers and make any necessary changes to their schedule PRIOR to the Grade 11 and 12 students returning to class. Orientation day supports students in their transition to high school and gives them an opportunity to meet other members of the MAC community before actual classes begin.

M10s (MAC 10) are randomly assigned groups of Grade 10 students who meet throughout the school year. The group meetings encourage friendship, communication and support for fellow students. M10 groups meet for the first time during Grade 10 Orientation Day and periodically thereafter to ensure students are aware of teams and clubs they can join, how to approach exams, how to deal with a difficult situation, and how best to approach learning and studying while still having fun and connecting with others. M10 groups are led by members of our Peer Support Team and teachers who assist students in finding their way through their first year of high school.

Career and Technology studies Hands on LearningIn the fall of 2016, a newly renovated CTS Space was opened at MAC. This will feature brand new computers, 3D printers, photography and videography equipment, a dedicated green room, photography studio, a large-scale plotter and charging stations for students who prefer to bring their own equipment. This room is designed to be unlike the typical computer lab, and to encourage problem solving through creation.

Communication Technology IB-MYP (3+ credits)

This course is a progression through the different stages of the design cycle, where students are constantly experimenting with ideas, researching topics, compiling sources, brainstorming issues, sketching possible solutions, making changes and critically evaluating their work. This course covers graphic design, photography and videography. Grade 10 has portions of all three, while 11 and 12 offer the students the ability to specialize in one of the fields, or continue to sample them all. We have a dedicated green room which is also used for broadcasting our video announcements, as well as regularly updated video and photography equipment.

Computing Science (3+ credits)

The programming portion of this course has a project-based game design approach with students having the ability to individualize the projects they create to their areas of interest. This starts with the Scratch programming language and progresses into

Java programming with Greenfoot for the latter half of the course. The theory portion covers the history and evolution of computers and technologies in general.

This course is valuable preparation for students interested in pursuing a career in computer science, computer engineering, game design, programming or engineering. At the 30-level, the 5-credit course is accepted by most major post-secondary institutions as a 30-level Science.

Design Studies IB-MYP (3+ credits)

The Design Studies strand covers CAD (computer aided design) work, with the intent of creating realistic 3D designs. This envelopes the creation of pre-existing objects, as well as innovative new products. These design courses utilize the Rhino 3D program and multiple 3D Printers which provide the students with experiences that are a close representation to 3D design in industry where they are able to plan, design and prototype projects. Students pursuing Engineering or Architecture are encouraged to take this course.

Mac Life22

Expand your learning OpportunitiesFilm And Media Arts 15 (3 credits)

Introduces students to film as an art form. Films are much more than entertainment; they motivate people, stimulate thought, encourage questioning, express personal viewpoints, and provide social and political commentaries. Films also convey the richness of the human experience at its best and worst. The intent of this class is to teach the student to appreciate the artistic and narrative quality of film as one of our most endearing art forms. The primary focus will be on film criticism and analysis. Numerous genres of film will be studied.

Fitness Performance Beginner (3 credits)

Comprised of 3 modules: Sports Psychology 1; Foundations for Training 1; and Injury Management 1. Students may take the Coaching Level 1 module for extra credit or substitute it for one of the previous three modules. Students taking this course should have a passion for individual and group fitness training and should be self-motivated.

Health Fields Beginner (3 credits)

Students who have an interest and curiosity in the health and medical fields will find this course exciting. Health Fields Beginner offers a logical beginning for those students interested in medical careers such as Physician, Nursing, Dentistry, Respiratory Therapy, Optometry, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Chiropractic, Sports Medicine, Medical Imaging, Firefighter, Paramedic (EMR/EMT), Massage Therapy or any other medical field. Perspectives and definitions of health are explored. Factors that influence the health of individuals and families within the Canadian context are examined. Health Fields Beginner includes a knowledge base of health and wellness, medical terminology, human anatomy (especially pertaining to the musculoskeletal system), physiology, disease, the prevention and treatment of diseases and musculoskeletal injuries/conditions, therapeutic modalities, basic nutrition, mental health and much more.

Speech and Debate 15 (3 credits)

Allows students to develop their skills in the various speech arts. Active participation and discussion by all students will foster increased confidence in public speaking and an appreciation of the validity of differing points of view and positions on a range of important issues.

Dual Credit

The Government of Alberta has identified education and entrepreneurship as cornerstones of a dynamic Alberta economy. The Provincial Dual Credit Strategy contributes to, and aligns with, the Premier’s mandate and creates more opportunities for students to earn credits in high school and post-secondary institutions at the same time. The courses offered in this vain at MAC are: Accounting 1 & 2, and Psychology 1040. All three of these courses are honoured as credits at Norquest College and may be transferable to other post-secondary institutions. All courses have high school pre-requisites and as such are meant to be taken closer to graduation rather than in Grade 10.

Accounting 1 & Accounting 2 (Bus 1290 & Bus 1291) (3 credits)

Here is an opportunity to get a head start on your future in the world of accounting. You may start exploring your interests by enrolling in the dual credit opportunity provided at Archbishop Macdonald High School.

The two (3-credit) courses – Accounting 1 and Accounting 2 –offered are part of the initiative that provides students the opportunity to earn credits in high school and post-secondary institutions at the same time. Partnered with NorQuest College, these courses provide an introduction to accounting procedures, financial statements, and their underlying concepts and principles. These courses may be the first step toward preparing you for a rewarding career with unlimited potential.

As all students are part of the honours course they will experience the curricular challenges through an in-depth development of the required related issues in an increasingly interdependent world. A greater degree of independent learning, written response, individual research and classroom participation is required in the honours class.

SciencesSciences 10 IB-MYP (5 credits) Our Science 10 IB-MYP is an academic course that expands the content of the Alberta Education Science 10 curriculum. It caters to students who seek a breadth and depth of understanding of scientific concepts and procedures.

The course provides students opportunities to apply this knowledge and conceptual understanding in a broad range of familiar and unfamiliar contexts with an emphasis on practical experimental work.

Accelerated Science 10 students should take a Chemistry class in their Grade 10 year (Chemistry 20 Enhanced or 20 IB-DP).

Students whose Science 10 grade falls between 75% - 79% are to register in Chemistry 20 Enhanced. Students whose Science 10 grade with 80% or higher can register in Chemistry 20 Enhanced or Chemistry 20 IB-DP.

As an alternate to Chemistry 20 Enhanced students can choose Biology 20 Enhanced but two Grade 11 sciences are NOT recommended in the Grade 10 year.

In Grade 11 & 12, students can choose the program stream of their choice by course and depending on the entrance requirements.

Students are invited to attend a wide range of post-secondary information sessions held yearly to speak to representatives

from universities in person. MAC is very fortunate to have an outstanding academic reputation nationally and universities and colleges are eager to recruit MAC students.

Scholarships are available to students to help subsidize the cost of post-secondary education and students are encouraged to visit the MAC website or speak with one of our advisors in the Student Services department to get more information.
