elcome to our Open Gardens Scheme 2012. This year, there are 30 dates in the calendar to celebrate St Luke’s 30th Anniversary. Garden gates will open throughout the year to members of the public to help raise much needed funds for the Hospice. We are sure that you will enjoy visiting these gardens as much as we did and we hope that you will be inspired to go along and see as many as possible. Each one is a delight to explore and your visit will be helping to keep the good work of St Luke’s going.

St Luke’s Hospice, Plymouth is a registered charity that relies heavily on charitable giving. St Luke’s provides specialist care for more than 3,200 patients every year. Government funding is limited, so we must raise at least £4.5 million each year. Therefore, your support is invaluable.

1 Gnaton Hall Explore over five acres of garden in a secluded position, including woodland, lawned terraces, wa-ter and bog garden, wild flower bank and walled garden. There is a wide variety of flowers, shrubs and trees to enjoy.

2 Mount Edgcumbe

Cremyll, Torpoint, Cornwall, PL10 1HZVia Torpoint ferry from the city or A38/A374 from Cornwall. Follow signs to Torpoint. Mount Edgecumbe is signposted on tourist signs. Or use the Cremyll Ferry from Plymouth.

Mount Edgcumbe House is the former home of the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe. A great family day out in our Open Garden calender. Set in Grade I Listed Gardens within a 865 acre Country Park on the Rame Peninsula. Spend the day exploring at your leisure, discover the Relic Garden or take a wander through the Italian Garden on your way to the Orangery for a spot of lunch. 3 Monkey Sanctuary

St Martins, Nr Looe, Cornwall PL13 1NZA38 Plymouth to Trerulefoot roundabout (take 1st exit). Continue on, turn right (to Looe/Polperro). At No Mans Land turn left, follow signs to Monkey Sanctuary. Or From Liskeard A38 to Plymouth, follow signs to Looe (B3253). Left at Twinaways Farm (signed Monkey Sanct). End of single track lane continue over crossroads. At Bindown turn right after Post Office and immediately left through No Mans Land.

Lovely gardens, sheltered and surrounded by beech and sycamore woodland overlooking Looe bay. Divided into areas: the spring and summer meadows, the pond, the woodland edge, the Victorian border and the forest garden. Home to many species - 23 butterflies, 54 moths, 15 mam-mals, 6 amphibians/reptiles and at least 60 birds.

4 Peter & Anne’s Garden

Sparkwell, Devon From the A38 take the Plympton turn off at Deep Lane Junction. Follow brown tourist signs through Langage to Sparkwell. Take the right fork towards Hemmerdon and Plympton. Located on the right, down the lane.

On the edge of Sparkwell village, a stone’s throw from Dartmoor Zoo, this unique garden offers many unusual features including a fish pond witha floating island, a working water wheel and acave with a covered well. With a variety of plants and a vegetable area containing a sunken greenhouse there is something for everyone.

5 Egloshayle Kingsand

Fore Street, Kingsand PL10 1NBSituated on the Rame peninsula, nr Torpoint. Travel via the Torpoint ferry or A38/A374 from Cornwall. The garden is on Fore Street (top of the village).

Dr Crook has owned Egloshayle for over 20 years and has some help with work on this beautiful garden. Some of the features include a lovelyspring garden and some specialist trees including a Judas Tree and a Liquidamber. Come on down to explore this charming village.

Thorn Cottage Take a drive onto Dartmoor to discover this beautiful garden in the middle of the countryside. Taking in 360 degree views, this garden is a true delight to explore. From the formal hedgerow area to the stunning wild Bluebell wood, there is plenty to see whilst enjoying a lovely home made cake.

Burn Lane Brentor PL19 0NDAt Bedford Square, Tavistock take hill between HSBC and LLoyds (signed Lydford and Brentor). After 4 miles pass church and Brentor Inn, take 2nd right (North Brentor). Turn left into Burn Lane. Head towards the moor. Thorn Cottage is a cream and green building, the 2nd property on the right.

7 Ian Jenkins Garden

Midhurst, Grenofen, Tavistock PL19 9EWFollow the A386 until 2 miles from Tavistock, after Grenofen sign turn right then right again (at pink house on corner), Midhurst is 4th house on right.

A 3/4 acre, mature rural garden with raised fruit/ vegetable plots, a small chicken flock and apiary. The Azaleas, Rhododendrons, specimen trees, perennial shrubs and plants fragrance and colour attract many bees and birds. Refreshments include soup and bread roll, quiches, cakes and cream teas. A beekeeping talk will be held at 3pm.

9 Southway Allotments Come along and visit these allotments and find out what you can grow! Members of the Allotment Association will be on hand to answer your questions and there will be a chance to visit the schools plot to see what Oakwood and Beechwood school pupils have been growing.

Pendeen Crescent, Southway, PL6 6SBTurn into Southway Drive at George Hotel, at 2nd mini roundabout turn left into Pendeen Cres. After 300 metres turn left into Pendeen Close.

Five acres of fascinating gardens, waterfalls and a lake surround the 13th century manor and chapel. The formal gardens where each terrace has its own ‘flavour’, combine with wilder areas nearer the lake to offer many surprises.

Upper Paddock

Back Street, Modbury PL21 0RFFrom Plymouth follow A379 to Modbury, prior to entering the town take a left turn onto Barrack Road towards Modbury school then first right into Back Street. The garden will be signposted from here.

A varied and colourful terraced garden hidden at the back of Modbury. Built on a slope with the bonus of lovely views of the hidden valley below. There is a wide variety of perennials, roses, shrubs, trees and a vegetable garden with soft fruit bushes. This is a very relaxing place to meet fellow gardeners.

13 Peter’s Garden A lovely garden with breathtaking views across the countryside. Landscaped from brambles and nettles into a beautifully designed domestic garden. Peter Harper has divided the terrain into different sections which include an Italian formal garden, water features, a wonderful array of heather beds and a wide variety of flowering plants.

Developed from an empty field over 18 years by Barbara and Eddie Jones. A wonderful place to contemplate nature and admire the super views of Dartmoor. Search for fairies in the wild wooded area, view formal beds, boxed vegetables, cottage garden and wild flower meadow with bee hives and young trees designed to please all the senses.

Front and rear suburban garden approx 1/4 acre. The beautiful front garden consists of a formal fish pond, rose beds and a scree area. The rear garden has been landscaped in a cottage style, with a small fernery, vegetable plot, two greenhouses and a wildlife pond. 2 Cliff Cottages Colebrook Plympton PL7 4AG and 6 Revell Park Road Colebrook PlymptonFrom Marsh Mills roundabout, follow signs to Plympton (B3416 - Glen Road). Follow for 1.5 miles. Turn left at mini roundabouts, then right after bridge onto Boringdon Road. Continue through the village of Colebrook and look for the Open Garden signs.

This year there are two gardens to explore in Colebrook, Cliff Cottage Garden and 36 Revell Park Road. Both gardens offer much to see and enjoy. Wind your way through bothgardens, which offer many delights and surprises. With a variety of attractions including home grown vegetables, chickens and honey tasting this will make for a fantastic afternoon out.

Diggin It A community garden growing and selling vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers. Developed from a large unused allotment space donated by Plymouth City Council. This wonderful lively garden has lots to offer the whole family with an experienced team on hand to answer any questions.

Created by Keith and Ros Wiley from a bare field since 2004, Wildside is a spectacularly unique garden that almost defies belief. Wonderful displays of perennials, grasses, Japanese maples and much more surround pools in a gently sculpted landscape.

22 Walled Gardens

Maristow PL6 7BZA386 from Tavistock. Follow signs to Buckland Monachorum. Right at Maristow Barton junction, first left past Maristow house. Left at the river junction and left again past the boat house. A386 from Plymouth to Tamerton Foliot village. Pass all 5 mini roundabouts. As the road bends on the hill take the 2nd right.

Originally built in 1860 to provide year-round produce for Lord Roborough at the nearby Maristow House. These walled gardens containing nearly 3 acres of south west facing land are being lovingly restored to grow a wide variety of produce. This is a great opportunity to see this project blossom and to gain an insight into Victorian gardeningtechniques.

Westfield gardens are a living memorial to the late Malcom Campbell Irvine. The spectacular location boasts waterfront views over Newton Creek. Fantastic themes and landscaping make this a truly magical date in the diary. The quiet hamlet of Trehunist nestled between Landrake and Liskeard will be opening 5 of its gardens this year. With a variety of cottagegardens on offer you can enjoy a gentle stroll and take in the diverse range of delights on offer.

30 Weir Cottage Originally owned by Lady Harriet, wife of the 3rd Curator of Kew Garden. Developed as an arboretum, this garden has matured exhibiting 14 fascinating trees, which the current owners will guide you through telling the unique story of how each tree came to Weir Cottage.

In 2012, St Luke’s will celebrate a new milestone as the Hospice enters into its fourth decade of care for patients from across Plymouth, South West Devon and East Cornwall.

We have been caring for thousands of terminally ill patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the past 30 years. Our passion and dedication to offer dignity and choice has never faltered. Our vision is to provide the very best of care to those with a life limiting illness whenever and wherever they need it.

St Luke’s cares for people with serious illnesses such as cancer, motor neurone disease, heart failure, multiple sclerosis and chronic lung disease. Statistics show that 1 in 5 people in this area will develop a terminal illness. Subsequently there is a growing need for specialist palliative and end of life care. In order to keep the Hospice open, we have to raise at least £5.5 million every year from the communities we serve.

Since 1982, we have felt a strong presence of support from the community; their support has always been and will continue to be very important. We appreciate the many partnerships, sponsors, volunteers, loyal friends, advocates, patients and families we’ve had the pleasure to know during the last 30 years. It’s an honour to pause, and simply say a big thank you to everyone for their support.

Throughout 2012, St Luke’s Hospice has planned a host of additional exciting fundraising events, in keeping with the ‘30’ theme. We’ve pulled out all the stops to bring you a year of unforgettable activities to raise the vital funds needed to keep the Hospice doing what it does best.
