WindyGrid

WindyGrid serves as a situational awareness and research platform that provides near-real-time and historical data from over a dozen sources—ranging ranging from 911 calls to 311 to tweets—which now provides a wide-ranging view for managers of what happens in the city.

Open Data Portal

Chicago was a pioneer in an open data portal, which now provides over 600 datasets online in a machine-readable format, ranging from crimes, water quality of beaches, traffic congestion, licensing, 311 calls, and more.

An emerging civic development community has volunteered their time to create new websites that enhance life in Chicago, improve transparency for city government, and provide testing grounds for programmers and

researchers using city data.

Using sensors to populate open data

The City of Chicago uses city buses to estimate traffic congestion by leveraging the onboard GPS signals that were originally intended with destination announcements and workforce tracking.

Chicago Park District reports water quality data every hour from sensors at Chicago beaches. The portal contains water temperature, wave height and frequency, and even clarity from in-water sensors.

Availability of bike rack locations for Chicago’s bike-share program are published every 15 minutes from each rack to let you know where you can pick-up or drop-off bicycles.

Open data can be a platform to power the internet of things using data collected by governments that is frequently relevant, useful, and sometimes

critical for Chicago’s residents.

One dataset online is traffic congestion that is estimated by the speed of Chicago’s buses throughout the city. Using current speeds, the city

provides estimated traffic congestion that is updated every 15 minutes. The data is provided as a JSON or CSV format that is available through an API.

As a result, @chismetcalf generated an imp to provide a red or green light to denote the traffic congestion on your route before you head out of the door. We are now seeing residents and companies integrating

open data in hardware devices.

University of Chicago has partnered with multiple institutions to build a mesh network of small sensors, dubbed the Array of Things, that will frequently post data for public consumption.

The Array of Things will provide hyper-local, temporal data on using a variety of sensors:

Sensors measuring sound and vibration

Low-resolution infrared cameras measuring sidewalk temperature

Climate and environmental data, such as air-quality and temperature

Next Generation of Data

With the growing amount of data, we face the following challenges with using data:

The volume of data to detect relationships through multiple permutations.

Research does not scale, and therefore, how do we expand to help the city’s multiple lines of businesses

How do we include local knowledge from each department to help inform our research practices?
