CODATA: Committee on Data for Science and Technology

“Strengthen international science for the benefit of society

ICSU’s Mission CODATA’s Mission

by promoting improved scientific and technical data management and use.”

Data Revolution: Challenges and Opportunities

The digital age has brought a data revolution that presents science with major challenges and opportunities.

Opportunities because we can gather unprecedented volumes and types of data and analyse them far more quickly.

Exploiting these opportunities is the major challenge of international science. Challenges for data infrastructure, networks and

analysis. Fundamental methodological issues for reproducibility

and transparency. Challenges and opportunities for science systems,

technical and human. Creating a world that counts: Mobilising the Data

Revolution for Sustainable Development. GODAN-ODI Report: improving agriculture, food and

nutrition with open data.

CODATA Strategy:Harnessing the Data Revolution

Exploiting the data revolution is the major priority for international science.

CODATA strategy lays out three priorities and a plan that shows we can deliver for ICSU on these priorities.

Promote intelligently open data data policies: supporting implementation of data

principles and practice

Adapt to the transformation in research data science: addressing the frontier issues of data

science

Promote data skills, data scientists, data managers data education: capacity building (particularly in

LMICs)

International Workshop on Open Data for Science and Sustainability in Developing Countries

Strong endorsement for the workshop from Kenyan Cabinet Secretary and from local universities and research institutes.

Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i: called on CODATA and other international organisations to 'become more visible in education and capacity-building, by developing science and educational programs and activities that focus on data and information’ in developing countries.

Aannounced data centre to be established at JKUAT ‘JKUAT has now established an ICT Centre of

Excellence and Open Data (iCEOD) that was part of the Nairobi-CODATA conference recommendation’

Developed a set of Principles of Preservation of and Open Access to Research Data in Developing Counties

Prepared outline of Guidelines for their implementation: workshop at GEO Plenary in Mexico, Nov 2015.

Open Data and Data Science Capacity Building Initiative

Data Science Capacity Initiative Developing framework and partnerships for

major data science capacity initiative. Timely to build on the data needs of the SKA. Address systemic capacity building

requirements including data strategies, data policies, partnerships, infrastructure programmes, skills.

Working with many partners (including GEO, AfriGEOSS, RDA, WDS etc).

Framework for Data Science Summer Schools Develop curriculum framework and materials. Certification process. Partnerships for sustainable model: include

MSR, CERN, ICTP. Pilot school with TWAS and ICTP in summer

2016 and with UCT before then. Model for standard and specialised schools.

Open Data and Data Science Capacity Initiative

Science International: High level statement of benefits of open data, need for international coordination, role for international science organisations.

Open Data and Data Science Capacity Initiative, holistic and systemic, addressing data strategies, data policy, processes and practices in institutions and science systems, infrastructure coordination and skills.

Thank you for your attention!
