Big Data Analytics (BDA) is rapidly turning out to be a significant global enterprise need. It aims to facilitatethe storage, querying and analysis of enterprise big data, which is getting more complicated and time-consuming with traditional database technologies. Apache Hadoop is a well-known Open-source BDAenterprise solution which is seeing an annual application growth rate of 60% globally.

With the rise of Apache Hadoop, a next-generation enterprise data architecture is emerging that allowsorganizations to efficiently rein in their big data business transactions. Hadoop is uniquely capable of storing,aggregating, querying and analyzing big data sources into formats that fuel new business insights.Organizations that embrace solution architectures focused on maximizing data-driven insights will putthemselves in a position to drive more business, enhance productivity, maintain competitive edge or discovernew and lucrative business opportunities. 1st Open-BDA Hadoop Summit 2014, organized by Innovative Management Services (www.innovative-management.org) was held in Karachi, Pakistan on 18th & 19th November 2014.

The Program included a Breakfast Session with a theme “Big Data Pakistan” on 18th November at Marriott HotelAmbassador Hall, Karachi.

Theme for the Summit was “Hadoop in Enterprise Architecture” held on 18th November at Marriott HotelMarquee, Karachi.

As part of the Summit Program, three focused sessions on Business Value with Big Data & Hadoop, Data DrivenBusiness & Hadoop Deployment & Operations were also lined up.

A Hands-on Training Session was held in conjunction with the Summit to acquire preliminary and state-of-the-artknowledge about the Big Data & Hadoop Ecosystem on 19th November at Microsoft Innovation Center, Karachi.

Dr. Tariq Mahmood is the Chief Data Scientist for Big Data with NexDegreePvt. Ltd., Data Scientist and Trainer with Innovative Management Services,both based in Karachi, Pakistan. He is also an Associate Professor at theKarachi Institute of Economics and Technology (KIET). He has around 10years of professional and research experience in the domains of BusinessIntelligence, Data Warehousing, Data Mining and Advanced Analytics. Healso has 6 years of professional and consultancy experience in Big DataAnalytics, particularly using Open-Source technologies like the ApacheHadoop platform and NoSQL databases. Notably, Dr. Tariq has designed BigData Infrastructures for the Healthcare, Telecommunication and Financialsector in Pakistan. The Big Data deluge has lead to the adoption of Big Data Analytics (BDA) for extracting valuable businessinformation from dynamic big data streams. BDA, although quite complicated, is seeing a rapid pace ofadoption primarily due to the BDA platform called Hadoop, which is an Apache project based on Google’sMapReduce data distribution framework. However, Hadoop application technologies are complex and theHadoop programming and installation expertise is still relatively rare. In fact, Hadoop is a subset of the well-known NOSQL movement, which itself contains novel open-source technologies to store and manage big data.NOSQL databases are in their infancy and much help is generally needed to harness their power of reining bigdata.

Primary focus of Open-BDA is to create an over arching platform to promote an Ecosystem for Data DrivenBusiness in the region, bringing state-of-the-art knowledge, used cases and best practices to helporganizations survey, sustain and succeed the business paradigm in this data driven world.

Through training and development services, this platform will also serve as a regional thought leader to graband carve out new roles and jobs that plug into data analysis capabilities by formulating alliances with localand international stakeholders of IT Industry, associations and governing bodies and managing Hadoop & BigData resources in Pakistan.
