New Dell Networking OS Version 9.11(0.0) Features

The following feature has been enhanced in the Dell Networking OS version 9.11(0.0):

Rev. A002016 - 12

Page 2: Open Automation 9.11.0.0 Release Notes - Force10 · Feature Description Puppet Introduced puppet feature support on MXL and FN IOM platform switches. Caution: The Dell Open Automation

Feature Description

Puppet Introduced puppet feature support on MXL and FN IOM platform switches.

Caution: The Dell Open Automation Virtual Server Networking™ software package (the "Product") may contain the VMware SDK for Perl, which is licensed by VMware, Inc. VMware does not provide technical support for the VMware SDK included in the Product. Users interested in writing scripts for the VMware products must obtain the VMware SDK directly from VMware. You may not create scripts for the VMware products through use of the VMware SDK included in the virtual server networking package. End users may use the Dell virtual server networking according to the terms, conditions, and limitation of the pertinent Dell End User License Agreement only.

See the Open Automation Guide for complete descriptions of the following supported features:

Feature Description

Bare metal provisioning Bare metal provisioning (BMP) provides automatic configuration of Dell Networking switches in a data center network. With this release, BMP is supported on the S4810, S4820T, S3048–ON, S3100 Series, S4048–ON, S5000, S6000, S6000-ON, Z9500, C9010, IOA, and MXL switches which includes pre- and post-configuration scripts.

Open management infrastructure (OMI) OMI is an open source protocol that supports the DMTF CIM/WBEM standards and Windows powershell desired state configuration. Microsoft uses the OMI framework to manage and plan the infrastructure components such as servers, storage, and networking. Dell introduces support to a new management interface on the Dell Networking OS switches, thereby allowing to manage the system from WS-MAN compatible clients, such as Windows PowerShell 4.0.

Puppet Puppet is a configuration management utility, that allows to define the state of system and automatically enforces the correct state. It provides an option to automate the repetitive tasks, deploys critical applications, and proactively manages the changes, scaling from 10s of servers to 1000s, on-premise or in the cloud.

Representational state transfer (REST) application programming interface (API)

REST API as an integrated part of the Dell Networking operating system, allowing clients to manage the switch through an XML-based web services interface.

Smart scripting Smart scripting provides a Perl, Python, Ruby, TCL and UNIX scripting environment for customized monitoring and management of Dell Networking switches.

Virtual server networking Virtual server networking (VSN) provides network connectivity, security, and automatic reprovisioning of VLANs when virtual machines are migrated in a data center. Multiple hypervisors are supported, including VMware vSphere and Citrix XenServer.

Web server Smart scripting includes a lightweight web browser and a sample web application. It exposes examples of common resources that can be used and customized to implement any service using a graphical interface. The web server can be configured to use HTTP or HTTPS from the Dell Networking OS CLI.

Changes to Default Behavior and CLI Syntax

None.

Documentation Corrections

None.

• Python interpreter and associated files

• Expanded set of UNIX utilities

• REST-like API based on CGI scripts

• Ruby interpreter and associated files

• Web server (HTTP and HTTPS)

To enable a scripting framework before the Smart Scripting package is installed, Dell Networking OS includes TCL, its Expect extension, and a number of UNIX utilities.

You install the Smart Scripting package in the same way as you install a Dell Networking OS release: directly from local flash memory on a switch or from an external drive on a network server. Because the installation takes time, it is performed in the background. When the download is complete, a message is displayed on the console. The package installation updates the running-configuration file.

Caution: Uninstall any previous version of OMI, Puppet, SmartScripts, and VSN before installing the new versions.

NOTE: If you have upgraded the SmartScripts package to 3.1.1.0 or later revision, the Open Automation (OA) package must be uninstalled before downgrading the Dell Networking OS image.

The following procedure describes the process of downgrading the Dell Networking OS image corresponding to the 9.11(0.0) release to a image that corresponds to an earlier release:

1. Uninstall the SmartScripts package.

2. Downgrade the Dell Networking OS image to an earlier release.

3. Install the SmartScripts package from an earlier release.

Applicable for S4810, S4820T, S5000, S6000, S6000-ON, S6100–ON, Z9100–ON, Z9500, C9010, and MXL platforms.

Caution: You must not modify (e.g., edit or rename) the files downloaded with the Smart Scripting package.

To install the Smart Scripting package, you must download it from the Dell Networking web portal:

1. On a PC or other network device, go to the Dell Networking web portal at https://www.force10networks.com/CSPortal20/Main/SupportMain.aspxhttps://www.force10networks.com/CSPortal20/Main/SupportMain.aspx. Click Login, enter your user ID and password, and click the Login button.
